Avoiding the cap with Rubio's cap hold....

Sign Pekovic for $1,000,000 to play through training camp with a team option on the first day of the season to extend him with a 3.54 million pay raise + a 2 year extension at 10% increases (3 years, 15 million). Then he'd only count 1 million against our cap until Rubio's cap hold drops off. And on the first day of the season, we pick up his option and he counts against the cap fully.

Would this work to basically get around Rubio's cap hold? Essentially giving us an extra 3 mil in cap space.

I do not think that Pekovic idea is legal.

We need to, as a fan base, get past the myth of cap space. We do not have any. The only way we bring in another starter-level player will be in a trade for Al Jefferson and likely Corey brewer with him. Possibly Kevin love depending on value. I guess a Pekovic trade would work also.

if you take the space we have now, add in Rubio's hold, Darko's contract and Pekovic's contract you see we have no space.

You cant's put an option like that into the first year of the contract.

"If the contract contains a clause stating that the player does not receive his salary for an option year if he is waived prior to exercising his option, then the window cannot open sooner than the day following the team's last game of the season."

That sounds illegal, we aren't going to have much capspace anyways. We have like what 13 million now? Darko and Pek should be 10 at least, and then Rubio's caphold should finish off most of the rest. Like rev said our only option is in a sign and trade basically, unless we deal Peks rights.

The 13 million already includes Rubio's cap hold. We'd have 15.8 million without it.
13 also includes the rookies deals which they haven't signed yet.

Let's not even try any shady deals like this.... Stern would have no problem making an example out of us again.

And his cap hold drops on the first day of the season. (Edit: although people aren't counting the extra 20% that the other 1st round picks will actually get paid)

The other thought was to sign Darko to a summer league contract so he gets used to his teammates and the offense. It'd be a nice bonus to actually use that 3 mil in cap space on Darko or Pekovic as an afterthought to complete the team's roster.

True, but I doubt they are going to give Lazar the extra 20%... probably Wes though.

This thread makes me wonder, could we draft Henk Norel 2.0? If I understand correctly, we drafted Norel so we could pay an additional 500K to DKV. Would someone from Barcelona declare just to be bought out by Minnesota?

If the cap space does indeed end up being a myth, the organization that sold cap space in their commercials rather than any player currently on the team will have a larger adjustment to make than the fans.

We'll be up to 8 or 9 if Bjelica comes over this year, judging by his thread.
