Wolves plan to meet with Rudy Gay

The Minnesota Timberwolves are planning to meet face-to-face with top free-agent target Rudy Gay on Thursday night, according to sources close to the situation.

The Wolves, armed with an estimated $13 million in cap space, invited Gay for a visit to Minnesota with a phone call when free agency commenced Thursday at 12:01 a.m.

Gay officially became a restricted free agent hours before the start of free agency when the Memphis Grizzlies extended him a qualifying offer on deadline day. The offer ensures that the Grizz will get seven days to match any offer sheet Gay signs from another team.

The Wolves badly need a dynamic wing scorer and are expected to test the resolve of Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley with their eventual offer to Gay, who averaged 19.6 points and 5.9 rebounds last season.

Minnesota drafted a small forward with the No. 4 overall pick -- Syracuse’s Wesley Johnson -- but naturally seeks a proven player at the position.

Really? Why? I don't really see Wes Johnson or Rudy Gay playing anything but the 3.

I'm all aboard the trade Jefferson and overpay for Rudy Gay bandwagon, I think it was all the horrible trade rumors for Al beating me down, but it sounds like a sweet deal now

It's the triangle dudes. If Snipes has lateral quickenss guard 2's that's a HUGE advantage for us. Imagine Snipes shooting over Mayo all day while Mayo tries to reach up and put a hand over his neck.

I think Gay and Johnson could coexist, especially when Rubio comes and can create offense for them, but I don't think it's optimal.

I dont see what we have to offer that would be better then what the Knicks or Grizzlies are going to show him. (Rudy Gay)

You guys have less than 10 mil after signing Pekovic, would Rudy really start that low?
Thank you for all the memories BRoy. You were a class act and brought hope to an entire region for 5 years. You will be missed.

I think we're assuming a S&T, probably involving Jefferson.

2s and 3s are often pretty interchaneable. I don't see Wes or Rudy as any worse ball handlers as Brewer and all 3 have similar body types. I don't think Gay and Johnson have any trouble coexisting. I also think Webster and Brewer are better off coming off the bench too.

I can see it now... Gay is an elite slasher, which will help free up Wes for spot up jumpers . One on each wing running the floor, filling lanes for Flynn.

I think its a no brainer to pursue this. Unfortuantely I get the feeling that a ton of teams are eventually going to come calling after they miss out on some of the bigger names so we are going to have to get this Al sign and trade done quickly.

Hmmm.... if we sign Gay and Darko... our line up as of those signing would be

Flynn/Sessions/(Rubio)
Webster/Brewer
Gay/Johnson/Hayward
Jefferson/Love/Bjelica
Darko/Pekovic

That first unit and second unit is great on paper I can't wait and see it next season! :D
With Webster/Brewer/Gay/Johnson all interchangeable on the SG and SF positions.
While on the frontcourt, it's also the same where, Jefferson/Love/Darko/Pekovic could also interchange with one another. :)

The 2 and 3 positions are basically interchangeable in the triangle, so wes and Gay might be the starters there, but I'm sure, as a vet, Webster has the leg up.

If we sign Gay, it would have to be part of a S/T because we no longer have the cap room to just "sign him," especially if we also plan on bringing Darko back. My guess is that we'd send out Jefferson (maybe to a third team who sends something to the Griz) and Brewer out in the S/T.

Despite the issues with having "all these SFs," signing Rudy Gay would fill a major need for us, namely a wing that can create his own shot.

I would imagine that Brewer would have to be involved in any sign and trade for Gay. We'd have too many wings, and they would need a wing, especially with them declining the option on their own Brewer.

Brewer+Al for Gay?
