Why didn't we wait to sign Darko & Pek?

If we really want to sign David Lee, it seems like it would have been a whole heck of a lot smarter to wait until we traded Jefferson and thus had more financial flexibility to sign Darko and Pek. We could have had the money to sign Lee at the outset of FA and then signed Darko and Pek after however long it takes to trade Al Jeff.

Was there seriously a strong threat for them to sign with euro teams? Am I missing something??

I'm not sure about Pekovic but I think signing Darko as quick as they did was meant to be a good faith gesture that they're as seriously committed to him as they said they were.

I'm sure Darko would've bolted if we didn't give him immediate interest. Also, we signed both of these guys BEFORE all the crazy overpriced deals started popping up. If Pek and Darko see the likes of Warrick and Amir Johnson making a ton of cash for never really doing anything, what's to stop Dark and Pek from asking for more $ ???

On Darko, he had a massive cap hold. I think Pekovic had some deadline or something too.

Correct. To show just how massive, it was $11,310,000 which would virtually eat up all our cap space. Turning that cap hold into a contract for $4.35 mil was Job One.

Regardless, it doesn't matter. We wouldn't dare sign Lee until Jefferson was traded first.

Peko's deadline is July 15th.

Yeah Darko had the big cap hold. But he also had interest from Euro teams for much bigger dollars. And as someone earlier mentioned, it may have been a good faith move, to fortify Rambis and Kahn's confidence in him.

And technically we were over the cap. And still are over the cap. And unless we sign somebody else we'll probably stay over the cap.

How are we over the cap?

We are only over the cap until contracts switch over to 2010-11.

Cap holds. As far as I know we haven't renounced anybody. We still have Spree's cap hold for example. None of our moves so far have required cap space, so I can't imagine we would renounce them if we didn't have to.

Spree's $18,928,700 hold, that thing is ridiculous, we should trade it for Carmelo.

Cap Holds for players that are no longer with us;
Latrell Sprewell * $18,928,700 Maximum salary 10 year vet
Damien Wilkins * $7,260,000 200% of previous salary
Kirk Snyder * $7,075,299 300% of previous salary
Michael Doleac * $6,240,000 200% of previous salary
Oleksiy Pecherov * $2,380,270 if 4th year option exercised.
Sasha Pavlovic * $1,800,000 120% of previous salary
Brian Cardinal * $854,389 Two year veteran's minimum
Sam Jacobsen * $854,389 Two year veteran's minimum
Nathan Jawai * $854,389 Two year veteran's minimum
Oliver Miller * $854,389 Two year veteran's minimum
Sam Mitchell * $854,389 Two year veteran's minimum
Andrae Patterson * $854,389 Two year veteran's minimum
Bracey Wright * $854,389 Two year veteran's minimum

Interesting question. Can you trade a cap-hold? I know you can resign the player and trade him (ala KVH)

I think you can, if the player agrees to it, you can also renegotiate a non-guaranteed deal and move them. The player would obviously get some cash out of the deal :-)

curious article over here;
http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_ ... get-traded

Some of the names might surprise you -- like current Raptors head coach Sam Mitchell, who could in theory be traded by Minnesota. (Based on a conversation I just had with the league office, for the league to approve such a trade, the NBA would have to be satisfied that Mitchell's contract with the Raptors was completley resolved -- bought out, terminated etc. -- and that whichever team was acquiring Mitchell was doing so to get him to play basketball for them. They frown on retired players moving around on paper just to satisfy the collective bargaining agreement.)

I like the way you think and I had a similar notion last season.

For example, how much would the Lakers trade for "the rights to Sprewell?" I'd guess a blasted fortune if it meant they could KVH him over the cap to add another $15 mil player to the arsenal, sidestepping CBA restrictions that slow the addition of salary.

Thinking I'd discovered a secret flaw in the CBA, I talked to Larry Coon, and he assured me that this could not fly. But for about 4 hours, I thought I'd found a profoundly valuable asset for the Wolves, and a hole in the best lawyer minds that created the CBA.

(Its this kind of thinking, like finding the holes in the armor of the CBA, that entertain my off hours. I've revealed myself further as a complete nerd, haven't I? )

LOL! That's probably why the CBA is now so fricking complicated, I think a lot of nerds have tried to find loopholes :-)

Considering Spree's bankruptcy, I think he could still be in play ;)
