MIN - SAS (TPE Trash compactor)

Post#1 » by shrink » Fri Jul 30, 2010 3:32 pm

MIN GETS: unguaranteed contracts + 2nd or cash
SA GETS: TPE

MIN can use its cap space at no cost to serve as a TPE generating machine. For example, the Spurs have three unguaranteed deals for Garrett Temple + Curtis Jerrells + Alonzo Gee, all at $762,195. MIN could make a swap and waive them (getting back every bit of their cap space), and turn SA's contracts into a more useful $2.3 mil TPE.

I see no reason either team wouldn't do it.

BLOCKBUSTER!!!! lol.

Have we seen a previous trade to this extent to compare to? Seems like this would happen more often if it was that beneficial.

I guess my question would be aren't we currently below the minimum salary requirement? If so, I'm sure we can get to it pretty easily with some one year deals (wouldn't be surprised if that would be Cardinal and/or Wilkins). So unless we've got a specific target that the $2.3 million would be used for, I don't see the point in making more financial moves that don't yield any other kind of asset.

Maybe it's happened, but I've never seen it. I'm a bit of of a mad scientist when it comes to financial trivialities. Its always an evolving world though. For example, I liked the Steimsma move at the end of the season, and I think we'll see more moves like this from other teams, because it makes another small financial LEGO that nerds like me can play with.

I'm not worried about he minimum salary. Kahn made a bazillian moves last summer, but even if he made none, the only implication is that the small amount we're under the lux gets sprinkled to guys currently on the team.

To me, this looks like we give up nothing, and we get a 2nd rounder (or cash, or whatever) for free.

TPEs like this can only be created when trading away a single player. You can't bundle a bunch of minimum salary guys to create a larger TPE.

Sorry to shoot down your idea...

Yep, you're right. This would create three small TPE's. Thanks for the head's up.

Here's an interesting aside: Since these players could all be acquired for the vet min, the three TPE's could all be created by anyone .. not just us with the cap space!

But since TPE's can't be packaged, they have quite little value if any, if they can only be used to acquire minimum salary players.

These sorts of deals don't tickle me as much as you shrink, but I guess it's alright.

It's even more useless because there's a minimum salary exception that lets any team sign or trade for minimum salary players. A minimum salary TPE is literally useless.
