Dampier on the blocks: MIN - CHA - CLE

With Kwame on board, I would change a MIN trade offer to this:
MIN GETS: Dampier + 2nd + cash
MIN GIVES: Koufos + Telfair
CHA GETS: Telfair + cap space ($10.4 mil TPE)
CHA GIVES: Dampier
CLE GETS: Koufos
CLE GIVES: 2011 2nd + cash
WHY FOR CLE? They get a young local center prospect to help the rebuild.
WHY FOR CHA? The Bob's are $9 mil over the lux with Dampier. If they waive his $13 mil deal, they get under, but if they trade him for cap space, they get under and gain a very valuable trade chip for next summer .. when they can afford to use it. The price is taking Telfair's small, expiring deal. CHA doesn't need Koufos with Kwame now signed.
WHY FOR MIN? Waiving Dampier's unguaranteed deal brings us back to $13 mil in raw cap space, less the $850,000 we'd use to bring in that veteran 3rd string PG people have been talking about. CLE's 2011 2nd should be high, for a good Euro stash.
The TPE is valuable for CHA, but we can't ask for much more, because other teams could do it. CLE and TOR have TPE's themselves, but it'd be more expensive for them since waiving Dampier doesn't get them back their TPE. SAC has the room under the cap to do the deal straight up. CHA could get a bigger TPE that way, but we don't know how much they'd charge for that conversion.

I'd be happy with that for the Wolves.

Do we really need to shed more salary? I thought we just got back over the minimum and at least until Flynn comes back, it seems like Telfair is more valuable to us since we need his play and he's still an expiring contract that can be dealt at the deadline.
... just not sure why we would help out CHA for so little in return.

I think that the 30-35 pick is going to be kind of a hype thing. After the Pekovic situation we see that the Euro talent needs to be out of the rookie restriction to be a viable drafting option. If we could do this deal and get a potentially high 2nd rd pick I would do it.

I'd hit that.

It would save them from paying Telfair if they traded Dampier for talent now rather than waited to do the same thing later with a TPE. Maybe those options aren't plausible at this juncture, but it shouldn't stop Charlotte from trying first.
EDIT: Looking at Charlott'es salary situation, I'd say it's 100% that Dampier is waived. They're really in no position to be adding any more salary.

I fail to see how this would net us $13 mil of cap space, we're not trading any salary away, we are then taking on $13 million, and then waiving said $13 million. The way I am seeing this is we save the salary we would have paid to Koufos and Telfair, plus the cash we get in the deal. Am I missing something here?
Also it would free up a roster spot, but make us even further under the minimum salary (which would be fine, as we could take on more salary in a trade later on).

if we're 9 mil under the cap and trading away Telfair and Koufos, a combined 4 mil in salary, then blah blah blah

For Minny, this trade is basically Telfair+Koufos for a 2nd rounder. However, it also allows us to sign a veteran PG that can shoot who could play off the bench til JFlynn is healthy. This is tough for the Wolves to rationalize right now b/c Telfair is already sitting there. If we dump him, it frees us up.
We are giving Koufos away pretty cheap with this, but we told him we'd find a situation where he could play, and Cleveland definitely fits that. This builds on the reputation Kahn is trying to create that we are a franchise that does right by players. It's basically good karma points.
In short, I like it!
