Vazquez?

The Magic may be getting closer to bringing Fran Vazquez overseas and into the NBA.

The Spanish forward is warming to the idea of coming to the NBA for the 2011-12 season, according to a report in the Orlando Sentinel.

Vazquez has another year left on his contract with FC Barcelona.

"It's more open now than it has been in the past with Fran," Magic assistant general manager Dave Twardzik told the Sentinel.

Orlando drafted Vazquez with the 11th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft.

So...do we now think it be a worth while player to pursue? Especially with Rubio?

Well, I keep hearing people bring his name up...I've never seen him play...so I really don't know how good he is...

But, in the spirit of Shrink, I think Orlando is way over the lux tax and would love to save a few bucks...

If we could get him by using some of our capspace, should we not at least consider him?

Let's say we offer Maurice Ager for Michael Pietrus, 3 million cash and the rights to Vazquez? That deal saves them 7 million! and only costs us 2 million...we don't have much need for Pietrus, but you get the idea.

The guy is talented, so I would expect Orlando to insist on bringing him in for themselves if this report is legitimate, since he's been their long lost lottery pick.

If he could actually be had that cheaply, I'd be fine with trading for him, although we don't really have major minutes for him with Love, Tolliver, Pek, and Beasley already on board.

Minutes are an issue...they are now and they will be next year...

Let's assume Beasley works out at SF and does need any minutes at PF...

So...PF...Love gets 30+ with Tolliver getting 18 or so
So...C....Darko 25 with Pek getting 23...

But, is Vazquez better than Tolliver? That is my question...from a strictly talent perspective it is probably the case that Vazquez is more gifted (I have never seen him play...lol)...

Another question...do any of us think Gortat and Pekovic could be effective on the court at the same time? I have my doubts, but thought I would throw it out there.

So a championship contender is going to trade their 6th man and former 1st rounder for Mo Ager? I question if they'd do it with Brewer involved.

I'd gamble the UTA 1st for his rights.

It probably doesn't pay off, but his upside is far above what we will be able to get with that pick.

I was more trying just to give an example of how the deal would provide financial relief to Orlando...that was just a quick example...not proposing it seriously....

The 'deal' might include, say, Indiana and Brandon Bass as was rumored earlier...

I haven't come up with a 'final' deal I like yet....

Don't forget Darko. 4 quality bigs (Love, Darko, Vazquez, Milicic) is not a problem. That's solid depth right there. If Vazquez turns out to be a beast, we just reduce another guys minutes.

I left him out because I don't see Vasquez playing Center. But you are correct.

If Peko does a good season, the wolves can forget him, but if Kahn and Rambis foresee he could be a fiasco, then Kahn could talk with Fran and Orlando, and send Pekovic to Disneyland for Fran rights.

I would take Vazquez over Tolliver 365 days/year.

If you think Vazquez will want accept the Tolliver role ... trust me, forget him.

I'm sure we could give him 22 minutes a night

Darko (26)
Pekovic (18)
Love (30)
Vazquez (22)

Beasley and Tolliver could just never ever play power forward ever again. Sorry Beasley...

I'd love to see a front court rotation of Darko, Love, Pek, and Vazquez. That would be a scary-good combination of post players with a broad range of both defensive and offensive skills.

Another related story with mention of Vazquez and Darko's shared agent Marc Cornstein...

Is Fran Vazquez coming to America — and Magic?
Magic believe Vazquez might make leap
October 23, 2010|By Brian Schmitz, Magic Insider

We have a Fran Vazquez update for you: The Spanish power forward apparently is closer to washing up on Orlando's shores.

Decir lo que? (Say what?)

The Magic say Vazquez — who stood them up after they drafted him in the first round in 2005 — is coming around to joining them for the 2011-12 season.

He has another year left on his contract with FC Barcelona.

"It's more open now than it has been in the past with Fran," Magic assistant general manager Dave Twardzik told the Sentinel.

After the Magic surprisingly picked Vazquez No. 11 — ahead of Indiana's Danny Granger — he burned and embarrassed the club with his no-show.

He put his name in the draft, but quickly became intimidated by the moment — even after arriving in Orlando, post-draft, for media interviews.

Barely able to speak the language and fearful of the culture shock as a small-town kid, Vazquez decided to stay in his native land. His father had died and his girlfriend — now his wife — wanted no part of the NBA.

Twardzik said barriers have now been knocked down, to some degree, because Vazquez has matured and learned a bit more English.

"All that has changed in many ways," Twardzik said.

A 6-foot-11, 230-pound power forward/center, Vazquez, 27, had a nice upside when the Magic selected him. He struggled mightily at times after signing a four-year deal with Akasuayu Girona.

His stock is apparently up again with Barcelona, according to overseas reports, especially as a defender and shot-blocker.

Twardzik said the Magic last saw Vazquez "face-to-face" in March and frequently exchange e-mails with him.

The Magic hold onto Vazquez's NBA rights as long as they want. I'm surprised they wouldn't be looking to unload him, given they are up to their ears in power forwards.

A postscript: The intriguing aspect of the Vazquez saga is that his American agent is Marc Cornstein. (Vazquez also is represented by two agents overseas.)

Cornstein had a public falling out with the Magic, particularly General Manager Otis Smith, in 2007 after the club did not re-sign PF Darko Milicic. Cornstein says he and Smith have put their nasty feud behind them, adding that he would help facilitate Vazquez's move to the Magic if he decides to come over.

"One [Milicic's issues] would have nothing to do with the other," Cornstein said. "Otis and I are fine. We've seen each other. It was years ago. It was an emotional time. I was less than thrilled with the way it was handled. It's past history."

?

Beasley is a vastly better pf than he is a sf. He's a +pf in this league, but a -sf.

The Fran's contract ends next June, and if he wants play in the NBA would be now or never.

I disagree with you, 2010 Vazquez is more mature player and person than 2005, and I'm sure he is analizing the NBA option. If he find a team who guarantee him minutes, money and rational buyout clause, then he will take it in consideration, but he never will lose the control of his career.

I could see Corey Brewer being a useful player in Orlando, and I'm sure he'd be very popular back in Florida. Unfortunately, its hard to see what salary ORL could move to match.

Perhaps if they find a taker for Vince Carter, we could wiggle into a deal and include Brewer in a deal that helps us land the rights to Vazquez.
