MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—The Minnesota Timberwolves have exercised contract options for next season on forwards Michael Beasley(notes) and Kevin Love(notes), guards Jonny Flynn(notes) and Wayne Ellington(notes), and center Kosta Koufos(notes).
The moves were made Monday. The Wolves also let the deadline pass for offering forward Corey Brewer(notes) a contract extension beyond this season, meaning he’ll become a restricted free agent next summer.
Beasley, Love and Koufos will be fourth-year players in 2011-12, while Flynn and Ellington will be in their third year.
Brewer is in a crowd at the wing position, and the Wolves want to wait to see how this season develops before making more commitments. Brewer is the longest-tenured player on the team. He was selected in the first round of the 2007 draft.

I'm a little surprised they picked up Koufos' option. Thought Brewer would be declined, he'll be gaawn by the deadline IMO.

I'm not. He's been solid, he's still very young, and until Pek learns not to commit 3 fouls in the first quarter, we're gonna need him. Even for the nights when Darko isn't doing anything.

He pretty cheap too. I will say that I'd much rater have him than Hollins.

I thought the same thing.
It was hard to tell whether the wolves really wanted Koufos, since UTA insisted he be inserted in the Al Jefferson deal so the Jazz could save some money. I listen to the front office compliment young players, but you never know if they really mean it. Seeing them add another guaranteed year to Koufos shows they see promise in him -- they are putting their money down.
I think this is further evidence that Corey Brewer may be traded.

Brewer wasn't declined, we just didn't offer him an extension. He's still a restricted FA at the end of the year.

yea, we do not lose Brewer, but as a RFA it is safe to say if we want to keep him the market will determine his value to be less. Also, his trade value remains as an expiring contract.

Good point, and I've seen some confusion on this elsewhere.
I wrote this elsewhere -- maybe someone will find it valuable.

Here's how to keep this stuff straight. By choosing not to extend him (to a new contract), it simply means he will go through the free agency process next summer. This is different than declining his option on a current contract.
I'm not surprised there was no extension though. Its possible that he thinks he can get more money than the Wolves would offer, or that he will raise his value this season since he progressed last year, but more likely, the wolves didn't want to lock him into a new longterm deal when they placed their bets on so many other swingmen (Wes Johnson, Martell Webster, Micheal Beasley) this off-season.

So this increases his trade value, but we can easily keep him if we want... Makes sense to me.
I'm not too surprised about picking up Koufos' option. No matter his mediocrity, he's a center. It's always better to have extras than to need to find one.

You can't extend them for less then their QO can you? I thought I remembered seeing something like that once.
And if that's true I'm not surprised they didn't want to pay him 5 million+ a season. If he comes back, and I think it's a big if, then they'll be aiming for 3-4 million I'd guess.

They have to offer him the QO this summer for next season for him to be a restricted FA. That's not a no brainer because the QO is 150% of this season's salary...

I had actually accomplished very little at work yesterday before I created this topic. I really just wanted to feel a sense of satisfaction about my day.
Hey, you did do something important today, you created a thread. Did I think my thread would be this popular? No. Did I expect that there would be twelve replies to my post? Of course not. Could I have imagined this sudden success and whispers of a Pulitzer nomination? Heck no. I take all that stuff in stride. I just worked hard and my hard work finally paid off. That's all I can say.

Wiz fan here...really interested in Corey Brewer. Granted i haven't seen much of him over the last couple years other than the sportscenter highlights. Strengths/weaknesses? How much better do you think he'll get? Whats is bball IQ like? How good is his defense? How much would he benefit playing next to John Wall?
Thanks.

Brewer likes to run. Next to John Wall he would be fantastic. He is rail thin though and I mean the rail is thicker. He excels at defense and loves shooting 3's. His shot has been off this year but he still tries to shoot out of it. Wiz are starting to have good chemistry now... Im a huge Brewer fan but I dont think he would work with the Wiz as you have other needs.
