WHY FOR DEN? Denver risks losing Carmelo Anthony for nothing to NYK next year, and worse, needs to pay a huge amount this year for a lame duck team who has no chance at a championship. Gallinari is young and promising, and can fill Melo's spot on the roster. Rautins is cheap, 1 yr salary filler. The key is the $29.4 mil in savings from barely edging under the lux. Finally, next summer after lottery taxes have been assigned for 2010-11, they could play with the TPE before having to deal with cap holds.

WHY FOR NYK? They give up the unhappy Anthony Randolph and Gallinari, and get their star in Carmelo Anthony, much to the delight of fans. However, this is even better. First, it moves the bad contract of Eddy Curry, and its unlikely DEN would accept Curry in a deal, and have to pay double for his lux. Second, Corey Brewer's athleticism and steals may turn out to be a fit in D'Antoni' style of play, and they may like his RFA rights.

WHY FOR MIN? Corey Brewer may not be back next year, with all the investment MIN has put into the SF and SG positions - we certainly wouldn't match a sizable offer from another team. $9.4 mil in cap space may be a lot to pay for a Curry/Randolph combo platter, but its a bird in the hand. Randolph certainly has talent if his head is in the game, and he fits our "buy-low, hope for upside" style. Curry's deal has been partially paid ahead, so he wouldn't cost the fill $11.

I would just add that the other alternative here is to keep Brewer, and send Koufos + either Hayward or Ellington to NYK.

The Knicks may like adding Koufos since they are size-challenged right now, and would be losing AR. However, we barely miss having enough cap space to absorb these contracts and simply send Koufos alone. I was reluctant to include either Ellington or Hayward, not knowing who we value more.

However, if both teams wanted to replace Brewer with Koufos + ____________ , I wanted to mention that this option also works financially.

I'd rather make NY eat Pekovic and leave Brewer. But that's just me, I have concerns regarding Pek adapting to NBA and his contract.

Randolph would have the same role as tolliver. Curry would have the same role as Koufos. We are only helping NY. I would only refuse that cap space for a starting player, probably a C (darko type defense with good post moves) or a scorer SG who can dribble. Thats are our missing pieces. Anyway I want give more time to Darko and see how Webster plays before to be sure we dont already have it.

Another thing to refuse that capspace would clean bad contracts already owned. We dont have many of those. Milicic and Pekovic are proably the cases, but is not about money, the problem its about years. Anyway we cant consider that are bad contracts at this moment. We should give more time to see if Darko numbers go up and if Pek adjust to the game.

DEN is actually the team I think that gets ripped off the least. NYK gets Melo, but perhaps they'd rather wait until next summer and see if they can get him for free? Or did waiting for LeBron leave a bad taste in their mouth - and they want the insurance? And as for us, J2J made me laugh with this quote:

I actually liked the Al Jefferson trade too. The vast majority of doubters should have kept in mind we've only seen half the return from the trade, because of the cap space. Just for example, if we used the cap space to complete it here, the deal for Al Jefferson was

You forgot Brewer, but yes I agree to an extent. I'm losing faith in Randolph, but then again D'Antoni is kind of an idiot.

Then of course you have to consider what Curry's expiring could maybe be spun for at the deadline.

That's if Taylor is holding the Wolves to a specific budget. He's got plenty of money to spend if he's willing to spend it.

I don't disagree, but I can't see Taylor giving the ok to spend $9mil to swap Brewer for Randolph. If Kahn's done anything, he's shown a desire to cut costs when it comes to pieces that won't make us significantly better. I don't see AR making us significantly better.

I don't think you can just ignore the money aspect and disregard if Taylor would be ok with spending the money. In this case I don't think he would be. Maybe if it was bringing in someone huge that's a major piece, sure, but we're not getting that in this trade.

I'm not ignoring the money aspect, but I think it's tough to objectively determine the trade value of money. Maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention, but it seems that owners are inconsistent in how they weight monetary benefit versus basketball benefit. Taylor very well might shoot down a trade like this, but at times Taylor has been very willing to spend money to improve the team. It may depend how much Kahn likes Randolph and how hard he would push for the trade.

Also remember, Curry's salary is going to be prorated, so it would only cost Taylor around 4 million if we made the trade at the deadline. That's not an outlandish number.
