MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — O.J. Mayo was dropped from the Memphis Grizzlies' starting lineup against Detroit on Wednesday night, the second straight game the guard has opened on the bench.
After starting his first 177 games in the NBA, Mayo was held out of the starting lineup Saturday night in the Grizzlies' victory over the Miami Heat because he was late for the team's shootaround that day.
Rookie guard Xavier Henry started in Mayo's place again against Detroit.
Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said he was looking for more offensive punch from his second unit.
"I've been thinking about it since before training camp. 'How we could make our team better? And how we could balance our lineup?' Hollins said. "I just felt like we weren't getting anybody on the bench who was a true, pure scorer."

How so? He's not long, athletic, good at D, or filled with upside like the rest of Kahn acquisitions.

Not filled with upside? He just turned 23 and was once regarded to be the next Kobe.... to me that fits the upside part a lot.

Mayo seems like a perfect player for Flip, Mayo's combination of jump shooting and passing ability would really complement Flips offense. Maybe there's some three way trade involving Washington possible...
MN Out: Flynn, Ellington, Koufos
MN In: Hinrich
Memphis Out: Mayo, Thabeet
Memphis In: Flynn, Ellington, Koufos
Wash Out: Hinrich
Wash In: Mayo, Thabeet
The wolves need more veteran leadership, Hinrich also improves the defense either both point guard or shooting guard, depending on where the wolves need him. Of course, I haven't actually seen him play in a while...
i actually agree with your overall point but i don't see how anyone can watch a lot of basketball for prolonged years, and not notice the fact that teams with solid, character veterans ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS maximize the talent of their prospects. Young NBA players are some of the hardest to deal with individuals on the planet as far as ridiculous emotions go, they're ridiculously prideful and unable to accept failure (and if they're not it hurts their draft stock). It definitely is a giant help to have people around who know what it takes to have an nba career and honestly that seems like a ridiculous thing to argue against.J_Era_3 wrote:mandurugo wrote:Devilzsidewalk wrote:Mayo's been banished to the bench so....

The whole vet leadership is complete bull and is useless. Why trade our young PG of future for a guard who is in his 8th year and is almost 30? I'd rather get a first round pick + young prospect than Kirk. But then you add some of our young prospects with him?
We need more of vet leadership right? So lets ship out Beasley for Ron Artest. Definitely improves our defense, provides leadership, familiar with the offense, and is a NBA Champion.
