MIN - HOU
HOU GETS: Corey Brewer + $3.2 mil cap space ($9.4 million dollars)
MIN GETS: Jared Jeffries + NYK 2012 1st (Top 5 protected)
Why for HOU? HOU may start rebuilding soon, and may be looking to replace defensive stalwart Shane Battier with a younger player. Corey Brewer would look pretty good in HOU next to Brooks and Kevin Martin.
Moreover, this deal saves the Rockets a chunk of cash:
$3.2 salary
$2.0 lux tax
$3.2 lux share
$9.4 mil
Last year, HOU got the 2012 NYK pick, plus a 2011 NYK pickswap for giving the knicks cap space for Jeffries. This year, they get Brewer (rather pay him than Jeffries) and nearly $10 mil .. and still keep the pick swap.
Why for MIN? Brewer probably doesn't have a role with MIN next year, and may find his current role decreasing even sooner, as they play Webster, Ellington and Hayward more. MIN has got plenty of 2011 picks as it is, and if they're planning on being an improved team in 2011-12, this pick could be their best draft asset. Brewer isn't needed, and buying a potential late lottery pick for $3.2 mil is a bargain.

Fine with me. Who knows if Houston does it despite the cash savings. On the otherhand, that pick might be in the 22-30 range next year if they get Melo in the fold. The 2011 pick swap looks like it might be worthless.

I don't think HOU will do this. I haven't checked up on it lately, but I don't think they mind JJ too much. Also, because he is scrawny but long, Brewer does better against SGs. I'm not sure he would be an adequate replacement for Battier (can't see either Brewer or Martin being effective against SFs).

a Brooks-Brewer- maritn backcourt would possibly be lighter than 3 swimsuit models.

I don't think Brewer would be back with us next year either way, so I would like to turn him (or his contract) into something of value, but how many years does Jeffries have left on his deal? I'm not sure if taking on his salary would be worth another mid-late first rounder because we won't have enough roster spots after using the UTA and MEM picks in addition to our own.

Last year. We could just buy him out or waive him.

Re: MIN - HOU
The biggest flaw in this trade for HOU is "If the Rockets wanted Brewer, why not just sign him as a FA next year?" However, I think they have to ask two questions:
Where is this pick going to land? Its incredibly hard to predict the value of a pick two years out for any team, and especially hard for a FA destination like NYK. What if they add Melo to Amare, et al? Or maybe add Chris Paul too? This could mean getting $3 mil in late 2012. On the other hand, it could be late lotto as well. This is almost never a superstar, but you may get a good young starter.
How much would you sell it for? For comparison, a late 1st can get a maximum of $3 mil in cash, and this revenue would probably be seen in the summer of 2012. But this pick could be higher.
1. Is $9 mil (in 2011) enough incentive?
2. Does spending money on Brewer instead of worthless Jeffries add enough additional value?
3. What about getting a free look with your players, before deciding whether to give him a contract?
4. Or saving your exceptions, since you could sign Brewer with Bird Rights?
I think its still a tough call for HOU, but that's a pretty good return. Perhaps they'd prefer if we spin Brewer through a third team, for a different player?

Re: MIN - HOU
As your Brewer + cap space for junky expiring + asset trades go, this is probably one of the better ones.
I'd pass still. I'd like to hang onto him a while longer to see if he can figure things out - he should be quite tradeable at the deadline if we've totally given up on him by then - maybe in a salary dump deal by someone.

After the job I just saw Jordan Hill do on the Lakers front line, I'd rather have him then the pick.

Yeah, I like Hill too as an athletic compliment to Love & Darko. And I still like my deal of Brewer & Pek for Jeffries & Hill

He's been athletic buddy. 35" vertical at the combine. I wouldn't mind him as an athletic 4/5 off the bench, because he's a pretty solid defender.

Jumping high makes someone athletic? Is Kevin Love ahtletic? I think he had the same vertical. Have you seen the guy play?

True, but if you watch Hill play, he's a quick leaper, and is athletic for a pf.

Re: MIN - HOU
If you want to go by combine tests, Hill tested DEAD LAST in lane agility. Behind the most unathletic player in the draft combine -- Austin Daye. With Kevin Love, Darko, and Pek here, that is the #1 thing I would be looking at.
Lane agility tests a players' speed moving quickly in various directions around the lane.

I wouldn't look at any of it to be honest. I'd watch him play. I've haven't seen alot of Hill, but I always under the impression he had above average athleticism.

I thought that too. Then I saw him play for New York and he always looked like he was playing in Sorels.
