Martell Webster Update

Post#1 » by Tha Juice » Fri Dec 3, 2010 4:28 pm

By JERRY ZGODA, Star Tribune http://www.startribune.com/sports/wolve ... page=1&c=y

SAN ANTONIO - No longer nearly a hunchback, Timberwolves swingman Martell Webster completed his first full-contact practice Thursday in San Antonio and will meet with doctors and team staff Tuesday to discuss whether he's ready to return from October back surgery.

This time, Webster declares his back surgery a success because he's back practicing five weeks later and perhaps, if Tuesday's appointment goes well, he'll be ready soon to play a game.

After practice Thursday, he repeatedly sprinted toward the basket and leapt toward the backboard, miming between-the-legs dunks intended to prove he has his "bounce" back.

Now all he must do is get his conditioning and his wind back.

Good news. My guess is Webster's still probably 1.5- 2 weeks out from playing.

Very nice. Can't wait to get both Webster and Flynn back. We need some change and those two should have some serious impact.

Yeah I agree. We can really use another consistent wing producer and a nba material point guard.

Flynn's ability to penetrate and Webster's D and shooting should really give us a boost in areas that could use one. Not too mention jus their presence alone could kind of provide a little extra excitement and energy amongst the guys. Anyone else think a healthy Webster could easily start taking quite a bit of minutes from Wes?

Wes will still start though for, most likely the rest of the season. Martell will still be getting a bunch of time but Martell just fits the sixth man role perfectly.

Another question? Why does everyone hate brewer so much, part of basketball is defense and well he has made questionable decisions regarding steals he is still probably the 2nd best defender on the team besides Milicic right now. I think that we put to much into points and shooting percent. There is no stat for good defense.

Of course now that I say that he will prove me wrong tonight :falloff:

I'm with you, I have never stopped defending Brewer. Obviously, he's not the guy we want taking crunch time shots, but he brings so many intangibles that effect games. Last night he was huge during our big run to get our lead.

People hate Brewer because he is bad at basketball. He's a good guy and he tries hard, but he just doesn't play good basketball. He has way too many gaps in his game. He takes ill-advised shots, he has no jumper, he has no handle, he can't control his body, he drives to the lane and throws up wild prayers like he thinks he is D-Wade, etc... His defense is really just a little above average and doesn't make up for how much of a liability he is on the offensive end. Seriously, I wish my TV had a function that made the screen go black every time he had the ball in his hands. How many times do I have to watch him screw up and have that dumb look on his face like we weren't all expecting that to happen?

Awesome, as long as they're not rushing him back. I'd hate for him to get injured again or to have chronic back issues because the team needed him back.

I think, by mid january, we can start judging our team because we'll have our complete starting five:

flynn
webster
beasley
love
darko

i say mid january because flynn and webster still have time to adjust. both are rusty at the moment.

we will only get better from here though, that's for sure.

Yea, I definitely think Webster should end up starting. He will just be more of a consistent threat than Wes, and Wes should hopefully have an easier time adjusting(not worry so much about defense) playing in the second unit.

Well, starting is kinda a formality anyways since Beasley, Webster and Johnson will be taking up the vast majority of wing minutes, and I have a feeling that Beasley and Webster will be in there at the end.

i also think that it's better for wes this season to come off the bench. he can play his regular position (SF), while also backing up some minutes at the SG spot.

I'd like to see Wes start because I think he and Flynn will have a good connection, so the more they play together the better. In the end though, with Wes, Brew, Webster, and Beasley, I'm content with just riding the hot-hands every game (unless we need defense more, then adjust accordingly).

My head will literally explode if Brewer is allowed within 5 feet of the court at the end of close games. Webster stands to be a gigantic upgrade offensively and I think it will be pleasant to watch someone play normal, calm, good, defense. I like Corey's energy on the defensive end, but he needs to get himself under control and focus that energy.

I think you start with Wes and bring Webster in as a jolt off the bench (for now at least) and then you end the game with Flynn-Web-Beas-Love-Darkeem (with, as you said, defensive adjustments as necessary).

Yes and yes. Very excited to see this team get heathy.
