Caron Butler could have torn his patellar tendon, and may miss the rest of the season for the Mavericks -- a season when they truly want to repeat.

Butler's on a $10.5 mil expiring, and DAL could get zero production from it.

Does DAL have enough assets left for us to convert that into productivity and cap space?

For example,

DAL GETS: Corey Brewer, Telfair/Ridnour, cap space? Maybe Tolliver or Pek?

MIN GETS: Butler, DAL 2012 1st .. Mahinmi? .. rights to Calathes? .. PG prospect?

DAL seems like a motivated buyer. Do they have the assets to get us to take Caron? Can anyone firm this one up?

I was thinking of this earlier, but I don't see enough value coming MN's way to justify using up all of our cap space.

It'd have to be a Jeffries to Houston kind of trade offer for us to bite... probably a 2012/2014 1st round picks + maybe a young player like Houston got in Hill (such as beaubois?, Jones?) and even then there likely would be a better offer out there for our cap space

Dallas has a bunch of TPE's they could use to get a replacement player without having to mortgage their future to dump Butler.

There are posters on the DAL board who would like to bring in Troy Murphy to fill their holes at PF with Dirk down. I've been keeping an eye out for Murphy deals, since we don't need him, and NJN may desperately need our cap space to have a chance at a Melo deal (5 picks now? puh-leaze).

Murphy's got a negative contract .. not as negative as productionless Butler though, so they wouldn't need as much incentive, which they'd struggle to meet.

The DAL folks were also talking about K-Mart, and the deal above works OK sending the cap space directly to DEN. What they would use for compensation for turning K-Mart into $25 mil in savings, I can only dream.

It does look like we are getting too good of a return. Though I am looking at it more from a fan perspective than an owners, so that might be the reason why

I was under the impression that one of the reasons NJ took on Vuj's contract (turning cap space into an expiring) was so that they'd be able to take back more salary in a deal with Den.

That's a solid idea shrink but I think Dallas will acquire an overpaid vet. for Butlers expiring. I wouldn't be surprised if they go after Iggy hard right now.

If the Wolves can figure out a way to include their cap space in virtually any trade this year to acquire an expiring and a 1st or more, I will sign wherever they want. I think the Wolves need to be placing many phone calls to teams like Dallas and Denver and reminding them that we have money we'd love to spend.

I'm ok with moving Telfair for anything whatsoever, but though he drives me nuts I think Brewer still has small value. I'm not sure I'd eat that much contract for a really late pick even in the deepest of drafts. I would be ok with moving Pek or Tolliver, but only if we were able to acquire Randolph from the Knicks.

I think it would take more than Brewer (a 4th wing) and/or Murphy (a 4th or 5th big) to pry those rights away from Dallas, but I could be mistaken. They seem like a team that would want Tolliver, and that could be enough for them to give up Butler's rights.

Depends on what they do to the cap. If they make it a hard cap then Bird rights will effectively end, since their only point is to allow teams to resign their own players over their cap.

Dallas has plenty of depth to replace Butler with Marion, Jones, Beaubois, Barea. Cardinal might get more minutes now too. If they make a move it'll probably be for a backup PF or SF, or using Butler as an expiring along with Beaubois/picks to try to land a big fish like Iguaodala.

It'll be interesting, Cuban isn't afraid to throw money around. I could see them getting in on an Anthony deal and ending up with JR Smith or Ronny Turiaf.

Anthony Randolph would seem to make sense for them, but I can't see a veteran team putting much trust in him.

They have a bunch of trade exceptions:

Depends on what they do to the cap. If they make it a hard cap then Bird rights will effectively end, since their only point is to allow teams to resign their own players over their cap.

Not exactly. There would be a soft cap for free agents and a hard cap for overall team salary that would replace the luxury tax. So you might have a 58 mil "soft cap" and a 72 mil "hard cap".
