Flynn: "I Hear Everything"

Jonny Flynn has seen it, heard it, read it.
That's what he does. The second-year Timberwolves point guard is a product of the digital age. You know how most athletes and coaches tend to deny ever reading what's written about them? Not Flynn. When he's not working out or practicing, he can be found surfing the Net, reading everything he can find on himself. And that includes articles, columns, blogs, even those snarky comments by folks at the end of such stories.
So he knows.
"I'm a guy who reads everything. Everything," Flynn said. "I hear everything. People are saying, 'We want to see more out of Jonny Flynn.' That's why you have to put your blinders on and remember what your goals are. That's one thing that has helped me get through."
Since returning to action with the Wolves on Dec. 14, Flynn's comeback has been slower than everyone would have liked. He wasn't used to playing at less than 100 percent. His limited playing time forced another adjustment for a player not used to coming off the bench.
"It's tough knowing you can't go out and play the way you want to play," he said. "You're not playing a lot, so you feel you can't get back as soon as you would like. So it kind of got frustrating. But we have good guys in this locker room that kept at me to keep working hard to get back to being the Jonny Flynn you've always been. I'm inching towards that. It's just taking awhile."
He's been at it for more than a month now, working to get back, reading what people thought about the process. His performance has been critiqued. His future -- which some believe includes a trade -- has been much discussed.
"It will make it that much better when I come back 100 percent and do what I'm doing," Flynn said.
Wolves coach Kurt Rambis said Flynn's practices during the team's four-day break between games have been his best of the season.
"Jonny is gaining confidence with every game he's playing in," Rambis said. "He's getting a better rhythm out there on the floor. He's looking more and more physically comfortable."
Getting healthier, with those blinders on, Flynn approaches the second half of the season knowing a lot of questions about him will be answered in the coming weeks, including that of his future with the Wolves.
He will keep the hammer down on the court and his finger on the pulse of opinion while he's off it.
"It's cool," he said. "People are going to have their opinions. There will be good ones, bad ones. Everybody has one, and you can't change 'em. You just have to keep doing what you're doing."

i hope jonny can start turning it around, i've been ruthlessly hard on the guy, i think he's been my whipping boy for the teams lack of success and my frustration with that. here's hoping he can turn it around, if only to raise his trade value.

I feel kinda bad for the guy if he is reading comments and blogs. I'd imagine that there are a number of not so nice posts by fans about him

He looked pretty decent in his last game, quickness looked like its starting to come back.
Yeah people are pretty quick to criticize him, but i'm not one of them. Not yet.

Sadly, he doesn't seem to take what he reads to heart. And I don't feel sorry for millionaires playing basketball for a living who don't even need to produce on the court to get their money.

That's probably part of the problem with him atm. If I were him I'd be ignoring media reports and blogs. He's probably hearing/reading a thousand different things about his game and that's on top of what the coaches are barking at him at practice.

I noticed the same thing, I saw a flash of last year's Flynn in the Clippers game.

Agreed. If this is hurting his confidence (I'm sure it is) then he needs to stay off the interwebs for a while.

Or some of us could just shut up for awhile....
Joking aside, everyone comes back from injuries differently. I said from the moment he had surgery that we may not see the real Jonny all season. I'm still projecting a return to form after the all-star break...but not much noticeable improvement until next season.

That's all fine and dandy...but isn't the problem that he doesn't even want to play here anymore? At least from what I've read or heard...
That said, I'd be ecstatic if he started playing better. I still remember that awesome game he had against the Jazz last season. Good times. Let's see those times come back...

I think Flynn will be fine by the All-Star break....injuries do effect people differently...he will return to his form from last year soon, maybe even better.
Once he gets regular mins, the production and confidence will follow...his last game was an improvement (besides the turnovers)
He needs to cut down on the flashy stuff and concentrate on getting quality assists.....

I think reading all these articles and stuff is probably a huge part of the reason why he sucked on the court lately.
I would suck, too, if I read a thousand posts about me sucking.
Honestly, he should have probably stayed in the D-League for about a month when he came back. He would've regained his confidence then and would now be back to old form.

I think his struggles have been more due to injury recovery than a lack of confidence

He really needs to stop reading that stuff. People are a-holes. They are going to rip you apart just because they can. Unless he can channel that into fuel for his fire he needs to stay away. Too much negativity. Sports fans are the worst, if you aren't pleasing them you might as well be dead to them.
Anyway I too saw those flashes in the Clippers game and hope we can put it together this season. We definitely need a decent PG here and I don't know if Rubio is going to be that guy for a number of reasons. We have taken a lot o shots at PG, hopefully one of them pans.

Well reading or not, you must play like a pro. That is the main reason you earn big money. Because you are a pro. People in Europe play on the court while they are throwing staff to them (beers, bottles, cell phones) and have fans singing songs about their mom. Ok it may be unacceptable and exaggerated but they make a ton of money and one competency they must develop is to perform at their best under any given night and circumstances.
And excuse me, if you have enough free time go shoot 1000 times rather than surf to the internet, read a book or if it relaxes you go out...

I thought, "I wonder if in this thread people will start saying a bunch of nice stuff after dissing Jonny for weeks." Yup, you know who you are.
