McHale basically wanted more flexibility, so he signed JS to a contract less than he was really worth (below market value) and assured him they told him they would reward him in the future with a large contract for his cooperation.
I don't really know what players, GMs, and owners are allowed to say. They seem to be fined a lot, so maybe they don't either. Either way, McHale blatantly broke the rules with an under the table agreement and Stern made an example of us.
