When are the Wolves going to get some Guards?

If the Randolph trade goes through. The Wolves will have 4 legitimate Forwards (Love, Beasley, Johnson, Randolph) to go with 3 serviceable Centers (Darko, Pek, Koufos). But, their Guards are not very good. (Ridnour, Flynn, Ellington, Telfair). And, then there are Webster, Hayward, Tolliver, and Brewer.

This team, regardless of the Center and forward positions is alway going to underperform until they get some above average Guards.

It doesn't appear that any legitimate Guards on on the block at the deadlne. So Kahn will need to look to the draft and offseason to improve the backcourt.

Bringing in Rubio should add leadership (creating quality shots in the flow of the offense for his teammates without turning the ball over.) If Rubio can do that, this team should be pushing .500.

But adding Rubio alone isn't enough. The wolves need at least two legitimate Guards.

In the draft, there aren't a lot of talented guards. I do like Alec Burks. He gets alot of his point at the free throw line. But so does Cory Brewer. Burks appears to be a more fluid ball handler who can create his own shot off the dribble.

I really don't care who they are. But the Wolves need to add two Guards this offseason who can provide leadership and the ability to score by creating their own shot or creating easy shots for others down the stretch without turning the ball over.

If Kahn can do that, then this team will be ready to win some games. Get R dun!

Adding a elite shooting guard is easier said than done. It's supposed to be a weak draft, we have little cap space, and I can't think of any guards that fit this description who are on the trade block. We just have to convince ourselves that Eddy Curry was worth the wait.

bring in Rubio, move the top pick for Tyreke Evans (as opposed to Sullinger et al), draft Knight w/ the pick we trade Flynn for. It'd be awesome, trust me :o

That is true. elite would be great. As in a Number 1 option. The best player on the team.

Rubio (The Leader)
Batman
Beasley (Robin)
Love (SuperGlue)
Darko (The Enigma or heir apparent to Luc Longley with the Bulls)

Bench: Johnson, Randolph, Webster, Tolliver, Pekovic

Thats a team I would pay to see.

Meanwhile, back in the real world as you said, elite SGs are hard to find. This team would be alot better with a functional SG who can do what Brewer does without the turnovers/bonehead plays.

It's not happening at the trade deadline I'm ok with that. But I would like to see it happen before the start of next season.

I hope there will be a lot of trading at the draft this year. Evans is a stretch to get. Adding guards with size that can handle and play defense would be nice.

Ellis or Mayo would probably be cheaper to obtain. Otherwise, there's still Harrison Barnes, if he stays around pick #5.

Sadly, we could be a lot further along right now. We could have had Paul George right now instead of Flynn. That deal was a no brainer at the time.

Randolph is a good player who doesnt have much playing time in NY, he would do just fine if not more in Min. But my question is who would give up his minutes for him... its already crowded on pf/c position and one more big would just make others less comfortable with their minutes.

I would rather bring great PG or some quality defenders.

Players that I would love to see is Smith from Atlanta (can take shots, reboud, defend), Andre Iguodala (mostly for defence, also can make some shots), Curry (Golden State, can run offence, defend), Nash (great vet PG who would probably coach Rubio if he finally decide to come in Min), Jason Kid (same as Nash).

But most of them is pretty unlikely because they want to play for playoff team, and its cold in min... or they are happy in their teams. But probably Rambis-Kahn can bring some of them or in that rank or some of that type of players if they try really hard.

I dont expect that to happen but I would love it if it do.

Batman, Rubio, Darko, and Love...Your dream is the whitest team in the NBA?

The only way we can get an established shooting guard is through trade and none are being shopped. If I had to take a shot in the dark, I would say Harrison Barnes, but we haven't even failed in lottery yet.

I think we should try and draft William Avery and move Rubio to the highest bidder in hopes to land a quality SG. But, if we could land Ellis somehow, he and rubio would look quite nice together.

I was impressed with Paul George, at least defensively, when the Wolves played the Pacers. I don't know about his ball handling.

Batman wears a mask. Do you know he really is? Barnes is another forward , who would have to mascarade as a guard.

Idk, I would do Johnson for Turner right now if we could. We would probably need to add a tad bit more for incentive...but I think both teams would agree that each player would perform better on the other team.

However, does Turner fit with Rubio...

I would like to see Mayo... other than that, we don't have many options.

Would be great if the Randolph deal gets done and we can flip Eddy Curry's contract + Brewer + (filler/pick?) for Rip Hamilton. Yes, I don't care at this point, I honestly think he would help this team grow and make Rubio look great. Not to mention we would be fighting for a bottom seed playoff spot (probably make it). We need a vet like him on this team and he can still get the job done. I would still draft Harrison Barnes when we are picking at 4-6, of course I believe he will stay another year.

Addressing the guard position will be difficult early in the draft. Like Dan said in his second post, we would be better off finding a guy who does some of the things Brewer does.

Here are 3 guys I've targeted later in the draft that could be good fits under that category:

Malcolm Lee: 6'5", 190 lb Jr. SG

On the defensive end, as we've mentioned before, Lee has all of the tools to excel at the NBA level with his combination of size, length, energy, athletic ability, and experience under a defensive-minded coach in Ben Howland. The fact that he projects to be able to defend both guard spots is an added bonus to his defensive potential at the next level.

Lee's defensive potential is probably the area where he stacks up best as an NBA prospect at this stage. In order to give himself the best chance in the future, Lee should embrace his strength as a defensive stopper who can cover either guard position. If he can do that while he continues to improve his perimeter shooting and adds polish to his slashing and overall floor game, Lee will earns looks from NBA teams looking to fill that void on their roster.

Justin Holiday: 6'6", 185 lb Sr. SG/SF

Holiday has lived up to his billing as a defensive specialist at the collegiate level this season, faring very well in high profile match ups against Kentucky's Terrence Jones and Michigan State's Durrell Summers. With added strength, his length, lateral quickness, quick hands and energy level could allow him to develop into an elite perimeter defender down the road. He is a smart player as well, and more than makes up for his lack of bulk with his intelligence and toughness. That said, his body will need to fill out before he reaches his full potential on this end of the floor.

David Lighty: 6'5", 220 lb RS Sr. SG
Defensively, Lighty is an active, and fundamentally sound stopper. Capable of denying penetration out on the perimeter, contesting shots with his wingspan, and making an impact with his anticipation in passing lanes, Lighty is a very good defensive player at the NCAA level. Though he could stand to get a bit stronger, Lighty knows when to give a cushion and when to close out, is willing to mix it up on the glass, and plays within team concepts. Lighty may not have the lateral quickness to be considered a defensive specialist at the next level, but his willingness to work hard on both ends only adds to his versatility.

It was a stretch, but I bet Kahn believes it's possible (remember Flynn at shooting guard). Personally I would rather take a shot at Kanter if the lottery gods chose to destroy our hopes and dreams.

All I have to say is that no one should take minutes from PEK. He is actually looking legitimately good.

He NEVER said Flynn could play SG.
