Up Next: the Draft

Post#1 » by Dan's with the Wolves » Fri Feb 25, 2011 1:19 pm

The next window of opportunity for NBA teams to reshape/augment their roster is the draft.

The wolves have a number of assets to deal on draft day including:
potentially 3 first round picks
Jonny Flynn
Luke Ridnour
Anthony Tolliver
Darko Milicic
Nikola Pekovic
Wayne Ellington
Lazar Hayward
Martell Webster

Who are your acquisition targets to build around the core of:
Love
Beasley
Randolph
Johnson
Rubio?

Everyone but Love is tradeable IMO.

I think Rubio is far more untouchable considering that we have only received mediocre offers for the #5 pick.

If they can walk away with Valanciunis and Burks, I'll consider it a huge win.

Honestly though, I'd take Barnes or Irving as well. Even Chris Singleton, who I think will be a defensive beast on this level.

As far as who's untradable, I think you pretty much nailed it. I would probably add Ridnour and maybe Webster though, just because they're veterans. Otherwise I have no problems trading anyone but Tolliver, who I love all over. And yes, I mean that.

43.2
Rubio ~3m
45.2

At draft time maybe we pull:
Our pick(assuming its not #1 or 2) + webster + tolliver for iggy
Webster + Tolliver =~8m
Iggy about 12m

Puts salary around 49.

Offer D. jordan the rest of our cap, thats something LAC will have to blink at. Let's just say its 10m/yr for simplicity(I'm thinking a bit less would get it done). Get a bargain basement 2, maybe CDR.

Jordan/Darko/Pek
Love/Randolph
Beasely/Johnson
Iggy/CDR
Rubio/Ridnour

We have an entire summer to rework the roster and get what we need. Fringe playoff teams will realize they don't have what they need to compete or have ill fitting pieces just as we do. They will look to move those pieces.

If we don't get the #1 pick, I'm willing to bet we trade the pick for an extended Steve Nash. Then I think we absorb Raja Bell's contract. I don't think anyone could top an offer of a top 4 pick, Ridnour and Webster for a 37 year old point guard. Flynn gets moved in a separate deal.

Nash / Rubio
Bell / Johnson / Ellington
Beasley / Johnson / Hayward
Love / Randolph / Tolliver
Darko / Love / Pek

Wouldn't you go out and buy season tickets for that team? Just remember Krap called it first.

Extended as in the Suns extend him before the draft, and then trade him to us without him being in the know?

That would be so dirty. I love it.

New Krapspiracy:

The reason Kahn was after Brooks was because he knew the Suns liked him. His plan was to flip him to the Suns for Nash in a sign and trade.

Make a krapspiracy that ends up with this lineup

Nash / Rubio
Iggy / Johnson / Ellington
Beasley / Johnson / Hayward
Love / Randolph / Tolliver
Darko / Love / Pek

I'm down on this draft like everyone else. Irving is the best player I've seen this year. If we got the #1 and took Irving, would we consider a Johnson/Rubio for Eric Gordon swap?

I don't think the Clips would do it as Gordon was becoming a borderline superstar before his injury, but if Sterling doesn't want to pay near max money for his extension this offseason maybe they consider dealing him for two cheaper players one of which, Rubio, has some star power, which is handy in LA.

I guess I'm just bored on a Friday at work.

Brightside: only 4 more months until we have Nash.

If this draft is as bad as it appears, can't we just convey our 2011 1st to the Clippers? Cause a top 5 pick this year may be worse than a top 10 from 2012.

Fair point, But in that vein, I would say that everyone including love is tradeable. In the sense that if you can upgrade you do it. I certainly would trade Love + pieces/picks for Blake Griffin. Love + fewer pieces/picks for LMA. But I was thinking more of how they could augment the existing core of Love, Randolph, Beasley and Johnson.
