Pre-Practice Meeting

It was time to clear the air.

And so, with only 23 games left in the season, hoping to take at least a few steps forward before it's over, the players and coaches met before Saturday's practice to let it all out.

"It was a meeting to kind of get the elephant out of the room," Beasley said. "Everybody had a lot of things on their mind, a lot of things they were frustrated with, with other players or coaches, with the way we've been playing. It was more of an honesty meeting than anything else. I think that's what we needed."

It was not a loud meeting, Beasley said. The players are discouraged, but they weren't pointing fingers. That said, it appears the meeting was a frank one.

"I wouldn't say any shots were taken at players' style of play or attitude, but some very good points were made," Beasley said. "Some honest points, things we needed to hear. Overall, it was a great meeting. We'll see what kind of effect it has on us."

Actually, Beasley said, considering the frustration level on a team that has lost seven in a row, he's surprised there wasn't at least a little bit of finger-pointing.

"Nobody wants to blame [someone else]," he said. "Everyone is holding themselves accountable."

But they also wanted to make themselves heard. There isn't a lot of time left this season, and everybody wants to at least end the season on a positive note.

"It was big for us," said forward Anthony Tolliver. "Everybody got a chance to get some stuff off their chests. I know I did. I was the first one to speak up, because I can't stand losing. ... I've never been in a situation like this, where not only are we losing, but we're losing a lot of uncompetitive games. We're not competing in every game. And that's unacceptable."

Wolves coach Kurt Rambis could feel his team's frustration building.

"There was a period where we were playing OK, and then, with Michael getting hurt, and family issues with players ... it kind of set us back in terms of our mental outlook, of who we are as a team," Rambis said. "You could see it. Hopefully being able to voice [their opinion] and hear other's voices talk about what we need to do will get 'em playing harder and being more consistent."

Themes? Neither Rambis nor the players got into specifics. But some of the talking points included players helping each other, playing harder, accountability.

"They all mentioned our games in Houston and New Orleans," Rambis said of back-to-back road victories before the current seven-game slide. "They talked about how well they played together as a team, how the ball moved and how fun it was to play, how unselfishly [they played]."

Part of the problem might be the tendency for players to try to do more individually when the team struggles rather than focusing on playing together. One thing is clear: The losing streak has badly damaged the team's belief in itself.

"I think our team confidence has gone down tremendously," Tolliver said. "Especially over the last four, five games. It's been pretty rough."

Beasley took that a step further.

"We have to play with confidence," he said. "We play games just to get games over with. Everybody thinks we're going to lose, so we think we're going to lose. We have to get some confidence back. Even though we've lost 40-plus games, we need to go out and play like we haven't lost, that we can't be beaten. I think attitude can take you a long way."

It remains to be seen how far Saturday's meeting will take the team. Beasley said the long practice that followed the meeting was a good one.

"Everybody was focused," he said. "It was physical, intense. It was a different feeling today. I feel better about the last part of the season."

I thought this type of meeting should have happened earlier but good to see it finally did. Hopefully we can finish strong in our remaining 23 games.

This is why I wasn't too happy about the "At least we are in every game!" bright side statements we had earlier in the season. When you lose that many games that closely, it eventually gets to you and you break down. Then you start fostering a culture of losing and its all down hill from there.

Anyone who watched even a small chunk of the last few games could tell they were starting to quit. You'd think that Wes and Love's performances during All Star Weekend would've ignited the group, but I think it might have ended up hurting more.

I'd like to know if losing Brewer was mentioned by anyone. That guy was our hustle guy, and now that role has moved onto Tolliver and Lazar.

I'm really impressed with Tolliver. I don't really want to see him get moved now, although his leadership might start to cause problems....you don't usually expect your 8th or 9th man to be the one to get onto the soapbox.

^Touche. I miss Mad Dog.

This is good news. Glad they finally had a meeting like this. Hopefully it will re-ignite the team.

Fantastic news and hopefully it'll be a fresh attitude and impetus going to the backend of the season.

I know players aren't supposed to point fingers, but here are some of the things that should have been said at the meeting.

- Read a scouting report before a game or at least try to have some general knowledge of other players' strengths. I see them sag off of shooters way too much and it is often not even due to dribble drive penetration or team help defense. A team just simply swings the ball around the perimeter and we give up an easy 3.
- Beasley needs to play defense. Before the season he talked about being a leader on this team which I think he should be given his skill set. However, leaders in addition to other things must lead by example and his defensive effort and pride needs to improve for him to be a true leader.
- Beasley needs to become our clutch guy. He is the only one with the skill set to make a big shot on his own.
- We need to do more with Love offensively. This one is on Rambis. Involve Love in more pick and rolls or something.
- Ball movement on offense. This was listed in the article, but I think it is attributable to how little our players move on offense. We finally have some strong shooters, but don't set picks for them or move them around enough. Our offensive sets are just dumbfounding at many points.
- Stop jacking up shots early in the shot clock. If you have an absolute wide open shot, ok. However, too often Tolliver, Ridnour, Flynn (not as much anymore), etc. jack up shots early in the
shot clock and waste possessions.
- Wes Johnson needs to be more assertive on offense and defense. I get that he is a rookie, but with his athleticism and shooting he needs to become more physical on defense and stop deferring so much on offense.
- Pekovic has improved greatly thus far, but stop posting up in the middle of the paint and getting 3 second calls. He just doesn't seem to learn from these mistakes.
- Offball picks are about team defense, not just the man chasing or being picked. Players need to step off their man setting up the pick to at least slow down the player coming off the pick in some form. I know Darko and Pek get enough fouls the way it is, but I would love to see them knock someone coming off a pick on their butt if for no other reason than to send a message.
- How does Flynn get beat off the dribble so much? He is quick, so shouldn't he have quick feet to stay in front of his man?

Anyone know what "family issues with players" that Rambis was talking about?

I'm assuming it was referencing Ridnour's situation.

Brewer had some trouble with his Dad I believe too, Ellington missed a game a few days ago due to an internal matter I think.

This is good. I was very much thinking that the team needed this kind of meeting. I think if Love was older and more experienced it would've been his meeting to call, but given how young everybody is, I'm glad the coaches took the initiative and did what is usually a player move.

The proof, of course, will be in how they play. This team badly needs some decisive wins, and some wins over good teams.

I think there is a lot that needs to happen with Beas. His ankle is still naggin him obviously and his shot hasn't been falling, but he needs to find other ways to help the team. His shot will fall again, let's just hope it's soon.

With a dismal 13-46 record, I can't believe there haven't been more meetings like this sooner. Actually, having said that, it's very possible there have been and we just don't know about it. I hope their have been. If I was a player (or coach) on a team struggling this much, I'd be ready to hold a therapeutic accountability and "let's put everything on the table" type of meeting after the FIRST multiple game losing streak.

I'm on the outside looking in, so this is purely speculative, but this team really seems to lack effective leadership from both coaches and players. In my opinion that has to be put on the coaching staff first with how young our players are. I would think that a leader would emerge in a "time of crisis" as it is kind of human nature. But I'm not sure we've seen that leader emerge.

I've told myself I wouldn't give up on Rambis until after this season, but I think the writing is on the wall. I don't want to see another complete roster turnover to change the culture of losing around here. To change our losing culture, the next best change that can be made, as it is not quite as drastic as a roster dump, would be an immediate change in coaching.

I didn't mean to turn this into an anti-Rambis rant. It was just my reaction to the themes of bad leadership and accountability that permeated from this article.

Did this team meeting result in less triangle more pick and roll? It seems especially in the Piston game, I saw some plays that I haven't seen in a long while? anybody else notice that?

I recall Rambis, at the beginning of last season, purposefully limiting the pick and roll game to get the young players to expand their games to beyong pick and roll. Has the initial learning phase ended and now the team is going to play to their strengths?

Jonny did talk about running p/r during his interviews last night

Probably the lack of Darko does more to limit the use of the triangle than anything. The interesting test would be if the Wolves rattled off a streak of wins on the road without the triangle (and presumably with lots of Anthony Randolph).

Rambis would definitely have a decision on his hands at that point. :D
