There has been a lot of talk about the need for veteran leadership on the Wolves. I am not in the camp to add a vet just to add a few short term wins. I think the Wolves need one or two veterans similar to early in Garnett's career when the Wolves added Terry Porter and Sam Mitchell, both who went on to be head coaches in the league. These were veteran players with future coaching aspirations that still could play, didn't break the bank, and relished the role of coach on the floor and in the locker room. Are there any current player of this mindset in the league today? Who are they?

Looking back, it's hard to believe Terry Porter signed with Wolves. Any similar player now seems to jump on a contender.
I think its difficult for fans to pick out these type of players since you need some insight into their personality. I have no idea who would be a good fit for this role, maybe Shane Battier?

The would have to be relatively over the hill, and value the opportunity to help develop players over chasing a ring.

I can't imagine anyone doing that. At least there's no recent examples of it. And I don't think that was the motivation for either Mitchell or Porter when they signed with the Wolves.

What about Grant Hill, contenders probably wouldn't want him. He would have some court cred with the young players.

I think Lindsey Hunter did this on the Pistons then more recently the Bulls.

I think contenders would want him but regardless of that what makes you think he wants to coach? That's what makes your question difficult. We could go on and on naming guys that have a near empty tank but we don't know if they'd want to coach or not.

I don't know if he wants to coach or not. But these are the type of relatively cheap free agents that should be on the Wolves radar this off-season.

I agree that is has to be someone that is playing a positive role in the rotation. Someone in the top 8/9 players. The best situation would be a starting SG. Ridnour fills the role as a bench guy at the PG but does not seem like the demanding leader.

I still think a lot of it goes back to coaching. Regardless of his concept of X/O he only dealt with a vet group before this and appears to not know how to handle a young team. The players do not fight for him.

Hill would be perfect for this team, not to mention he's a fantastic guy.

I would be ok with it being a starting SG if they brought in a young SG to develop to take his place.

I think you hit it on the head with regard to Rambis' coaching style. He hasn't visibly adapted it to the current situation. Who was he trying to motivate with his latest Chris Paul comment.

Hill, Bell, Redd if he still has anything left, Battier would all be good.

Jeff Foster too, he seems like the kind of guy that might be interested in it. Maybe Pryzbilla if he doesn't consider retirement.

Are there any semi-productive vets that still sign deals with crap teams? The league has changed a lot in the past 15 years. It seems like any player that has been around for a while and has some gas left in the tank latches onto coattails for dear life in order to try for a ring. If they do end up with a team like the Wolves, they'll piss and moan until they're bought out or traded.

Theo Ratliff and Juwon Howard would have fit the bill perfectly as this type of player when they were here, but instead, demanded to be cut loose.
