Timberwolves to offer 70 million extension to K-Love

Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star Kevin Love can look forward to a contract extension offer of six years in the $70 million range once a new NBA labor deal is reached, a little birdie says.

The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement expires June 30.

Love, 22, can become a restricted free agent after the 2012-2013 season. The Wolves have no intention of letting him get that far.

Love, who is being paid $4.61 million this season and is signed for $6.1 million next season, leads the NBA in rebounding (15.5 average) and double-doubles (56, five more than Los Angeles Clippers’ Blake Griffin), and ranks 18th in scoring with a 20.9-point average.

Love said Tuesday evening that he likes Minnesota and hopes to remain here.

Right money in my opinion.

Seems a bit premature since there will be a new CBA between now and then but I'm glad they are basically saying "we are going to lock you up and be fair about it".

I'm sure they want to lock him up quickly before Love quickly realizes our Build-A-Team plan is a complete fail & he bolts to OKC.

I think it is a good measure of faith in love, but you really want to wait until after the CBA is signed and the exact figures are understood.

What if you have a hard cap?
What if you have a franchise tag?

Things like that could make a difference in exactly how long and for how much we sign Love.

Also, does extending his contract like this change our current cap situation and potential to make a deal at the draft? (Not like we will)

I didn't realize that Blake Griffin played for OKC...

Lucky for us OKC is projected to be over any realistic notion of the salary cap in the new CBA and will not be able to afford to make an offer to KLove.

He's from OKC.

Oh really? That I didn't know but the quote "56, five more than Oklahoma City’s Blake Griffin" sounds like he plays for the Thunder.

Wouldn't that be like saying LA's Kevin Love leads the league in rebounding?

I agree it's misleading and poorly worded.

More like "Portland's" or wherever in Oregon that he's from , but yeah, I suppose.

they fixed it:
Love, who is being paid $4.61 million this season and is signed for $6.1 million next season, leads the NBA in rebounding (15.5 average) and double-doubles (56, five more than Los Angeles Clippers’ Blake Griffin), and ranks 18th in scoring with a 20.9-point average.

Guess it was a typo afterall. I give people too much credit.

Keep him around for 6 more years? That's good stuff right there.

second update: evidently the original article was from Charlie Walters and he is the one that said OKC. InsideHoops fixed it. Why am I not surprised?

It averages out to roughly 11.5 mil a year, which I guess is fair. I would think someone would throw the max at him in FA though.

11.5 is about right, depending on what the new CBA is.

I'm glad that we're going to tie him up and that we're showing this kind of faith in him but $11.5m seems a bit..pricey. Any other decent examples what other PF's/C's of his standard are getting?

Aldridge 5 years/65 million
Jefferson 5 years/65 million
Boozer 5 years/75 million

Lee and Boozer each got 6 years, $80M

I was worried that Boozer deal would skyrocket Loves.
