Cuban's idea is unfortunately divorced from our current reality. If there was no lottery in place and the quality of players entering the draft was constant it might be a good idea. With the current system your best bet is to always try for short term gains instead of long range plans and hope for a lucky break.

Yeah, you've still got to make good decisions (or have your gambles pan out) - but the wolves have been at the bottom for years and how many chances have they had at a transcendent talent in the lottery that would take them back to the KG years? That one superstar you need doesn't come along too often, and simply going to the bottom is no guarantee that you'll get that guy. A lousy team might have more money available for a FA, but how many realistic chances have the wolves had at getting a guy who would make the difference? I just don't think Cuban's idea has much merit, putting a good team together requires a moderate amount of skill and a lot of luck. There's no easy or logical way to do it. So put the best team together you can every year and don't gamble to heavily on future potential.

I've always agreed with this sentiment. It's a superstars league. 24 of the last 25 championship team have had one of the top 50 players in history. Sure, you can luck into one of those guys, like we did KG (though you had a much better chance when you could gamble on highschool players), but you're odds greatly improve if you get that #1 or #2 pick (i.e., Duncan, Howard, Wall, Rose, Griffin, Durant). We haven't been able to get one of those guys.

exactly, like i couldn't understand for the life of me what the hell the bobcats were doing hiring larry brown....he is the kind of guy who KILLS franchises that should be rebuilding, he goes in there, sits all their recent lottery picks and plays all 30+ year old guys and scratches and claws for every last win and where does that leave them? a completely average team that will always be average because they perform too good to get a high lottery pick and too bad too do anything in the playoffs if they even get there at all....you have to know you're team and be honest, either you're competing for a ring and playing you're best vet players, or you're rebuilding and playing you're young guys and letting them grow and make mistakes....it's that cut and dry too me.
