Phil Jackson Questions Kahn/Wolves

Post#1 » by Klomp » Sat Mar 19, 2011 9:20 pm

There are certain NBA jobs that swallow head coaches alive. Somebody asked Jackson before Friday's game if he thought the Wolves' job was the right one for Rambis when he was considering it two summers ago and if he still believed his friend and former apprentice would survive long enough to avoid such a fate.

Jackson mentioned the Timberwolves' "devastating" loss of Kevin Garnett -- who was traded away in July 2007 -- and described the team's most recent efforts to rebuild by compiling former lottery picks who failed elsewhere as "haphazard."

"The purpose seemed to be right, the words were said that we're going to build a championship," Jackson said. "I remember the commercials during the game last year. Wasn't it about how to build a championship with the general manager [David Kahn] and the whole bit? Then there's nothing spent. They still have a payroll that doesn't reflect the idea of going after a championship.

"It's hard to measure the words with the action. It doesn't look like they've really acted that way. They've acted toward accumulating raw, young talent, which is hard to coach."

Is Phil Jackson an idiot? To build a championship you can either buy it, or build it through draft/trades/a few free agents. Of course our payroll will be small when we suck.

It's easy to spend and make money in big markets with the likes of Shaq, Kobe, Jordan, and Pippen on your team. Nobody is going to demand to be traded here and no top free agent is going to sign here. This team needs to rely on draft picks (hasn't gone well in that department) and taking risk on young guys like Randolph, Beasley, and Darko. Going into this summer we have a lot more assets to go after that singular move than we did last summer. I'd rather still be waiting for a big move than have lots of money spent poorly in a rush to improve. Look at the Bucks as an example of that.

Phil is just trolling as usual, but he has a point. Acquiring career bench talent and expecting it to perform as starter talent is a bad strategy.

No way we can lure top tier talent to Minnesota, sorry Phil. We need to find our best players via the draft, and once we have a formidable squad we will at least be a somewhat desirable locale to decent free agents.

It focused on Artest's unspecified criticism on how the Timberwolves play defense. "They have a gimmick defense. It's hard to play them because they're a last place team and they're doing this gimmick defense. We're probably going to win anyway. They got this gimmick defense. I can't wait to get to the playoffs."

And it highlighted Artest's belief that Jackson and Timberwolves Coach Kurt Rambis, a former Lakers assistant, colluded and strategized how to get Artest a technical foul. "I think him and Phil set me up because they're friends," Artest said. "I think they say Ron is going to do this, so play him like this. I think he and Phil have dinner about me. I'm so happy I don't have to play against Minnesota this year. I hate playing against Minnesota. I'm happy I don't have to play against Minnesota anymore."

I get the impression that Artest is an idiot.

It's ironic since his smack talk is a gimmick. Such a dummy.
