#3 pick: scenarios not involving self-immolation

Post#1 » by Blue Wolf » Wed Apr 13, 2011 11:49 am

Having the worst record only means a team will most likely to end up with the third pick in this draft, which is par for the course for the Wolves because there are only two guys (Irving - all alone on the top tier / Williams - undeclared but alone on second tier for now) who are at the top of everyone's draft board.

Assuming we land #3, what are your best case scenarios. Stay put and take BPA? Package the pick with other assets to bring in someone like Iggy, Ellis or Bogut? Move down and pick up other assets? Build a giant wooden slingshot and hurl Kahn, Rambis and the pick like a big red angry birds at the NBA's New York offices?

Personally, my two best case scenarios would be a trade to bring in a proven vet or to hope that Utah really likes a player they don't think will be available at #6. The Wolves would then move down to #6 and pick up #12 for the trouble. At #6, we draft Burks. We then look to move the #12 and/or #19 picks to move back into the 2012 draft.

If we can't even self-immolate then we're truly screwed

I think we're actually most likely to get the 4th pick, and least likely to get the 3rd pick.

I don't even want to be there when the lottery rolls around. You just know we are going to get our hearts ripped out again. It's also fitting that in the draft where we are the worst team in the league, there are NO can't miss stars. It's like every other year there are two awesome prospects. Of course, we fall on one of the years where everybody seems so-so. Why couldn't this be a draft with a Blake Griffin/Durant/Rose.

It fits even more that we lose our draft pick to the Clippers in next years strong draft.

I'd say move down, either with our 1st + Flynn for Clevelands second draft pick and top-5 protected next year or the same package and Utah's two firsts. Either way pick up someone like Biyombo and Burks with Utah's two firsts.

Another possibilty is packaging Flynn and Memphis' pick to move up.

If we don't land #1 or #2 I say we trade for a vet or move down a few picks. Only players besides Irving/Williams I'm interested in this draft are Biyombo and Burks and I think they are probably a reach at #3 or #4, although Biyombo may be a realistic choice for our pick by draft day.

If no Barnes or Irving, trade down to get an extra proven player + pick (6-9) range & get Biyombo.

Possible players to target if we indeed can get a good deal to move down:

Cle: Parker, AV17?
Det: Hamilton, BG?
Jazz: AK47, Bell, Favors (pkg WJ)?

If we can't get Irving or Barnes, I'd like to see us try to package the pick with some younger guys for a more proven, higher echelon player, depending of course on who is available.

Trade for Iggy or similar caliber player. This team needs to get better fast. If they end up with a top 5 pick again in next year's extremely deep draft, what few fans they have left will be gone.

If you think Biyombo has "Ben Wallace" written on his face, like some guy said, draft him.

Depending on workouts, if we get pick 3 or less, it's time to deal that sucker.

Would people trade our pick at 2 or 3 for Evan Turner?

I kind of suggested this on T&T, if the Wolves had gotten the #3 pick.

What about trading the pick + assets for Horford.

I figured Beasley, Wes(Depends on how much YOU value him), Flynn, Darko, #3 for Horford and Zaza.

The deal is basically Beasley, Wes, & pick for Horford. Then we swap back up Centers(Zaza has a year less), while Flynn is a cap filler.

My guess is, the deal depends on how much you value Wes Johnson. Pretty much everybody around the league see him as a bust, that will be a career back up. Wolves fan might think otherwise, but like I say, it depends on how much you value him.

You say why should Atlanta move Horford for lower value pieces. Well I like Horford, because he is very versatile, but we need more size in the frontcourt, specifically at Center & also need more offense in general and most likely, Horford is the only guy who we can get fair value on.

Me myself, is willing to gamble and hope Kanter is at least a low post threat. He isn't as athletic as Horford, and definitely isn't proven against American talent, but if he can hit the mid range every now and then It would be ok as long as he can produce on the low block. Beasley can provide us with more offense and make Marvin expendable. Wes can take Crawford's minutes. Darko provides a needed shotblocker besides Josh. Flynn, well Flynn is Flynn...LOL. Maybe Flynn can prove to be a 6th man type player like Wes will have to be.

The Wolves get a complimentary to Love, who can play Center. A Love-Horford front court would give Rubio(Potentially coming over) some great floor spacers to work with. If that trio is successful, which it can be, then the Wolves can try to start luring a few quality FA's.
