Team Synergy Sports Stats

I've been using the Synergy Sports PPP stats a lot lately (especially in the Wes Johnson thread), so I thought it would be interesting to post the team's offensive and defensive PPP for discussion.
First: All stats from here - Mysynergysports.com
NAME:
Offensive PPP - (NBA Rank)
Defensive PPP - (NBA Rank)
Love:
O - 1.03 (46)
D - 0.89 (215)
Beasley:
O - 0.9 (263)
D - 0.95 (350)
Johnson:
O - 0.87 (309)
D - 0.92 (284)
Randolph:
O - 0.92 (231)
D - 1.02 (434)
Tolliver:
O - 1.02 (55)
D - 0.94 (331)
Ridnour:
O - 0.92 (231)
D - 0.89 (215)
Darko:
O - 0.78 (405)
D - 0.83 (84)
Pekovic:
O - 0.86 (324)
D - 0.99 (405)
Ellington:
O - 0.89 (280)
D - 1 (415)
Flynn:
O - 0.66 (459)
D - 0.98 (390)
Hayward:
O - 0.82 (372)
D - 1.31 (475)
Telfair:
O - 0.81 (382)
D - 0.88 (189)
Webster:
O - 1.03 (46)
D - 0.96 (364)
Brewer (in Minny):
O - 0.82 (372)
D - 0.92 (284)
A few observations:
1) Love, Webster, and Tolliver on O and Darko on D are our only decent players and Flynn on O and Hayward on D are very nearly the worst in the NBA.
2) It's not surprising that the Wolves were last in the NBA, they sucked.
3) It would be interesting to see how much of this is due to O and D systems, and how much is due to the players.
4) Brewer really wasn't nearly as good on D as his reputation suggested.

If I may damn him a bit with faint praise, I am surprised that Flynn is a better defensive player than on O. Relatively better of course, but I didn't expect that.

Our system is garbage with the personnel we have.

Exactly, we should be setting our young guys up for success by implementing a system that best utilizes their skills instead of using one that sets them up for failure.

Ha, I've read too much economics and geography- thought for a minute you were talking about Purchasing Power Parity, an alternative measure equivalent to GDP.

these ranks make no sense. How is hayward ranked 475th in a league with less than 475 players. Or flynn at 459...

I'm guessing that it includes everyone, even the guys that only had 10 day contracts.

interesting, I wonder if Darko/Love would be a passable combo if we'd stop posting up Darko so often and surround them w/ some better perimeter talent

At the very least you should filter players not playing significant minutes. Better yet, rankings at their positions vs other starters/bench players as the case may be...

Here's a link to a snapshot of results from March another guy put together...
http://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/thread.php?num=153463Glancing at it, the results are kind of all over the board. For example, Al Jefferson comes in second for best overall defense.

Then the ratings would be pointless

Not really pointless, maybe misleading, but bad is still going to be bad.

Offense
Love 46
Webster 46
Tolliver 55
Randolph 231
Ridnour 231
Beasley 263
Ellington 280
Johnson 309
Hayward 372
Brewer 372
Telfair 382
Darko 405
Pekovic 405
Flynn 459
Defense
Darko 84
Telfair 189
Love 215
Ridnour 215
Johnson 284
Brewer 284
Tolliver 331
Beasley 350
Webster 364
Flynn 390
Pekovic 405
Ellington 415
Randolph 434
Hayward 475
This makes it a little easier to compare. (I love MS Access.)
I actually believe PPP is pretty reliable. The way they fall into rank on O and D passes my eye test. For example, I thought Pek was too short, slow, and earth-bound to guard pretty much anyone. And I thought Darko played very good man D. People talked about Webster playing good D... he moves around a lot but that's not good D. I just didn't see it. And Randolph, well, he blocks some shots weakside but his man D is atrocious.
Yeah. We suck.
I still think using Darko in a defensive role and offensive rebounding role suits him best (if you can get him to board). Choose Darko over Pek, basically. And I think you have to choose between Johnson and Webster. Not sure about that one.

That's interesting. I was scolded for being down on Hayward on Rube Chat earlier this season. Their reasoning... "he plays good D." Zing.

I thought he was going to be a good defender, he tries but just not athletic enough I guess. Disappointing. I was expecting it to be a solid pick at least.

I'm certainly no expert on this stat but the fact that basically everyone on the team sucks terribly in the rankings indicates that it is a systemic problem to me.

it doesn't compare really well to the rest of the league, but against the other players on the team the rankings look pretty accurate

you know what...I bet TheFranchise21 means Kevin Garnett. I've been mulling that over the past 5 years or so, I was thinking maybe something blackjack related? But no, I think it means Kevin Garnett.
p.s. I've had an account since October 2005? Thats crazy. I could've improved my self educationally in that time. Gotten degrees in stuff. I could be understanding compound words like "myself" right now instead of typing "my self".
So much wasted time.
