Marc Gasol Available?

I skimmed the article on the financial side, but the Grizz don't always make financially-driven decisions.

If the NBA insists on a hard cap of $45 million we may be watching the last NBA games we'll see for a very long time. We're talking about forcing every star player in the league to take a retroactive pay cut just to allow teams to have the minimum numbers of players required to field a team. Coming back to our original subject, it creates a very hard position for the Memphis Grizzlies, even as their owner is finally willing to open up his wallet. To start with, it probably means Marc Gasol is available.

"Basically, I'm not going to sit and pay a contract which everyone says is ridiculous," Heisley said Monday. "But my intention is to bring Marc back. If he wants to be here, he will find I will be very, very receptive."

If he wants to be there? Marc Gasol wants to be on the team that will pay him the most to play basketball. It sounds to me like Heisley is preparing his exit clause, and that's music to the ears of teams like the Houston Rockets, who covet Gasol.

Hmm .. Maybe he'd consider coming to play with Rubio?

I like this guy. He's not a superstar in any single category, but he is a very good player in nearly everything he does.

There was some discussion on Canis that Alex Kennedy said Mem and MN were discussing a possible s/t. I do not see it happening because you cannot exchange the 2nd for a RFA.

I'd love Gasol on our team.

Don't think we get it done, though. :(

Randolph for Gasol S&T?

I don't get the point of the S&T, we wouldn't offer him more than the max deal and that negates the benefit of signing him under Bird rights.

Probably because we do not have the cap to sign him outright?

I believe this deal could not happen until the new CBA so any rumor of #2 for Gasol is bunk?

And of course, it would take care of the whole "Memphis could match any offer sheet" problem.

Forgot about that!

Britt Robson used to call Gasol "the water buffalo"... he's improved since those days, but I think he is still slow, relatively weak for his massive size, and doesn't play strong. Pau is still the far superior Gasol, not a big fan of the wolves paying big bucks to add him to the team. Eh, as usual I've hardly seen him play so I'm sure you guys can correct me on the player assessment.

I would absolutely love (Marc) Gasol on the team - especially with the idea of Rubio coming over.

Get it done, Kahn.

Shrug, he's not only improved his skills, but he's lost a bunch of weight and majorly improved his conditioning.

I recently saw stats on Gasol in the playoffs. Memphis's net rating was +1.91 with him on the floor, and -11.2 with him on the bench. Their defensive rating was 100.1 with him on the floor and 112.1 with off.

Just take a look at his stats if you don't have time for video clips. Guy was like top 5 or top 10 for NBA centers in most stats, and was really efficient (including 75% from the line with a good amount of attempts)

Yeah, I don't think you can turn down the chance to add him. I wouldn't offer the #2 though, they just don't have that kind of leverage.

Did anyone else find this funny?

Like Conley and Gay?

Yeah, Heisley kind of reminds me of Kahn (but a hell of a lot more lucky obviously). Lot of stupid statements.

I would definitely love to Gasol if we could do so without involving the #2 pick. No clue what the cost is of acquiring him, but I'd love it. The real question would then be how we get rid of Darko or Pek's deals.

I would say that virtually any deal for Gasol that doesn't involve Rubio, Love or the #2 pick is pretty much a no-brainer.

Why isn't the #2 in play for Gasol? (I realize that we couldn't make a trade at draft time, but it's possible that a deal could be worked out where the Wolves picked for the Grizzies and a sign and trade was completed later).

He's a 7'1,'' 26 year old, high level starting center with no health concerns and playoff experience. I'd move anything on the roster for him (with a long term deal) with the exception of Love and probably Rubio.

DraftExpress Jonathan Givony
Heard Cleveland offered Memphis their #4 pick in exchange for Rudy Gay (w/help of their trade exception). Memphis rejected

Someone else pointed this out but it's dicey to trade the #2 pick for Gasol, a RFA, at draft time. We would have to wait until the new CBA is signed which will likely be long after the draft takes place.

That's what I was alluding to in the first part of my post. My question was more pointed at why people wouldn't include the pick as value for Gasol.

Latest I've heard (talk on the street) is Toronto's 1st and Bargnani for Gasol and Memphis' 1st. This would allow Gasol to play with Calderon.

Memphis doesn't have a 1st, it belongs to the Wolves.

But even if they did, Bargnani is awful, and the only reason why Gasol would be allowed to leave is because he's going to get paid big bucks. They wouldn't take on Bargnani's giant contract, they would just keep Gasol.

See? You don't want your kids picking up their knowledge of sex or the NBA on those Canadian streets.
