Pre-Draft Workouts

Post#1 » by Klomp » Mon May 23, 2011 1:14 am

Here will be a place to discuss all pre-draft workouts that have taken place, or will be taking place leading up to next month's draft.

Today's workout included players: Andrew Albicy (France), Paul Carter (Illinois-Chicago), Cameron Hodges (Minnesota State), Blake Hoffarber (Minnesota), Jacob Pullen (Kansas State), Jamie Vanderbeken (Iowa State)

There likely aren't a lot of players with first-round potential here, not even with the Wolves' second pick, which comes at No. 20. And the Wolves don't have a second-round pick this year. At least not yet. But, should the Wolves acquire a second-round pick in a pre-draft deal, these are guys who might be looked at. They could also wind up as potential undrafted free agents.

I still like Pullen. He seems like a good player to bring along as Ridnour's eventual replacement.

I've got a real Ronzone after watching those videos. I love the draft so much. Can't wait until we have big name players coming to town.

Moore is nice. Combo guard who can shoot anywhere and can defend too. Solid backup.

I could see Hopson going undrafted, honestly.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/sam_amick/05/23/predraft.camp.wrap/

The player who was stuck on the sidelines at Kentucky last season because he was ruled ineligible, measured out quite well, standing 6-foot-11 ¼ in shoes and weighing in at 259 pounds while proving to be incredibly well-conditioned. His body fat was just 5.9 percent, or a little more than half of expected No. 1 pick and former Duke point guard Kyrie Irving (10.2).

And according to his agent, Max Ergul, Kanter -- who is projected as a top-five pick despite the fact that teams haven't seen him play since last year's Nike Hoop Summit in Portland -- convinced NBA executives that he has the stamina to play heavy minutes right away.

He lasted approximately 21 minutes on a brutal treadmill test that includes steep inclines, declines and sprints, putting himself atop the big man class when it comes to being dedicated about his body.

"He went 21-plus minutes on the treadmill test, and only five guys -- plus Enes -- [did that] and four of them were guards," Ergul told SI.com. "[NBA officials] said that was the first time in the draft in modern history that had happened, that no 6-11-plus guys ever finished 21-minutes-plus on the treadmill test ... People don't realize how prepared this kid is, how dedicated he is."

I'm really leaning towards Enes Kanter. It's hard to argue if Williams or Kanter is truly better, but Kanter plays the position that's hardest to fill. Centers aren't a dime a dozen and many tend to be overpaid. Minnesota isn't exactly the premier destination for free agents, so this could be their only real chance to land a real big.

Every report I've read so far about this guy has been encouraging. Many of these top tier prospects hide from these types of workouts, but Kanter jumps right in. A lot of these scouts are right when they say it shows that he has a lot of confidence in his abilities.

I was first impressed with reports about his size early on (including BMI), but I didn't realize that the guy has so much energy. I'm not sure how good his agility is, still waiting to see if he will take the 3/4 sprint test.

BTW, Kanter wants to be a professional wrestler after he'd done with basketball. Watch your back Darko.

I don't like the red flags on Kanter's knee(s). If he can go a full 82 game schedule each year, I like him at 2. I still question him playing next to Love. I'd like an athletic big next to Love.

In other news:

--Ronzone said he hopes the team will figure out a way to acquire a second-round pick by the time the draft rolls around. "You have to prepare for every scenario," he said. "We'll probably end up with something down in the second round. I like the second round."

--Ronzone said the Wolves would bring in 15 NBA free agents for a two-day workout June 2 and 3. Among those who could come are Steven Hunter, Cedric Jackson and Quincy Douby.

I am now working on a time machine that will allow us to go back in time and hire Tony Ronzone on to the Wolves' staff for the draft two years ago.

I wouldn't mind us buying a 2nd round pick, there are a lot of sleepers in this draft that's for sure and I trust that Ronzone might find a steal.
