Should the Wolves Trade for Russell Westbrook ?

Post#1 » by Wolves21 » Sun Jun 5, 2011 2:16 am

Just thinking of if trying to bring in Westbrook would be a good idea and what it would take to get it done.I am all for bring in Westbrook sense him and Love were team mates back in college at UCLA and Westbrook could be the man on this team while Love would be the number two guy.Plus I think with Westbrook on the team it would increase the chances of Love staying around.

So what could get a deal done if at all possible for Westbrook.I was thinking something like Rubio and the #2 pick or Rubio and Johnson could maybe get it done. But is that giving up to much ?

Lebron James?

I think a deal of Rubio,Johnson or Rubio and #2 pick would be pretty far.I might even go as far as Rubio/Bealsey/Johnson or Rubio/Beasley/#2 pick to get that deal done.I think those two trades are more then enough.

I am actually trying to be serious here.Reports going around the net is that Westbrook might be traded and some fan boys flowted out a Paul for Westbrook deal that got so much legs that the GM of the Hornets had to respond with a NO.Which in most case mean if you have to respond to something their some smoke others wise the story would have died down and the GM/Coach/Player what have you would never respond sense it has no bases.

Westbrook is a stud. Had the 2nd best year for a PG this season, him and Love would make an amazing duo. Which is why OKC would never trade him.

Not sure if serious...We have Rubio, whom we are building the team around, and is the future of our franchise. Not to mention, the Thunder aren't going to trade him right now unless they can get CP3 or D12 for him in a package.

Everyone is correct that the Thunder will not trade Westbrook. Unless it's for CP3 or Howard. Although if Rubio turns out to be the stud we think he is then this could be good for both teams.

What I've seen from Westbrook this playoffs is that he's a skilled player but also a low-efficiency chucker that cost the Thunder a few games by not involving his teammates.

I don't think that OKC would trade Westbrook, but it's always easier to trade the #2 man when Durant will be bringing in the fans. To me, the way that would have the best chance would be:

NOH GETS: Rubio + 2 + 22
OKC GETS: Chris Paul
MIN GETS: Westbrook

Westbrook is young, but OKC is a contender and wouldn't want to go younger now at PG with Rubio.

That is an interesting trade. Have you posted it on the trade board? If so, what has been the response?

New Orleans gets a couple of young assets for Paul
OKC upgrades the point. There is the risk that Paul won't resign. Probably can't do a long term deal as part of the trade given the lockout situation.

Timberwolves consolidate potential into current all-star talent with connection to their best current player. I wonder how the fit would be with Westbrook as the point guard. I certianly would rather have the ball in Westbrook's hands than Beasley down the stretch. Upgrades the defense exponentially. Giving up on Rubio before he plays a game for the wolves plus losing the number 2 is hard to take. But, adding a proven all-star in Westbrook that upgrade the driving ability and defense would be sweeeeeet!

Which team would say no to this deal?

Minnesota. Why in the world would we trade Rubio plus the #2 for Westbrook? Crazy talk. Just keep Rubio.

It will be interesting to see how much Rubio does for business. Are we going to have sell outs next year? I think a horrid Twins season followed by a likely horrid vikings season could really help things for them in terms of drawing fan interest. Hopefully the lock out won't be too long.

I like this take. I'm sure Rubio will sell some tickets initially, after Kahn's been hyping him for years. He's also young and handsome, and easily marketable, and I think may bring in a few more ladies. However, people will be constantly scrutinizing the kid, and if he is only average, even halfway through the season I think we'd see ticket sales drop, with people hanging their heads, murmuring, "same old wolves."

I think Westbrook would sell tickets as well, and is more likely to bring wins, at least right away. I like Westbrook here because he is already an All Star, and he still has plenty of room to get better - a legitimate chance to become a superstar. He plays defense, and his desire to score would actually be a benefit here. The Trade Board recently ranked him the 13th most valuable player in the league, and Rubio and 2 right now would probably not be in a conversation for the top 30. His youth fits the team as well, and you know he'd love those long Love outlet passes - and the fact that they are buddies is going to help keep both happier here. Finally, it's dangerous financially for a rookie to try to leave his team for a big first contract elsewhere, so we'd get him for four years.

Yes, I agree, this is a ton to pay, and I also agree that we have positions of greater need. However, I still think this is a league based on acquiring superstars, and then filling in talent around them. Getting superstars is tough, and rarely do teams want to trade them (the fact that Durant is considered the superstar in OKC makes Westbrook conceivable). It's doubtful we're going to get a superstar in free agency, so I think this is a rare opportunity to get a Top 20 guy with youth, talent, and upside.

All good points.... I would probably do it since Westbrook has superstar upside, but teams just don't swap established young talent within the same division.

AND we could be creating an OKC dynasty in our own division. It's tough.
