Euros - who's in, who's out

Post#1 » by younggunsmn » Tue Jun 14, 2011 3:26 am

From DX:

# Jonas Valanciunas is telling NBA teams picking in the top-10 that he's ”100% staying in the draft." Buyout issue has yet to be resolved. about 15 hours ago

Yes! Reunite the Jonas Brothers! Maybe he got a guarantee pretty high up from an up-an-coming team from the midwest? One can only hope.

Davis Bertans is officially staying in the draft, according to his agent Marc Fleisher. Won't reveal whether he knows where he'll be picked.

Who?

# Igor Crepo: "I don't know where Mirotic is going to get picked. He doesn't care if he's 1st or 2nd round. He'll stay in Spain 3-4 more years" about 11 hours ago
# Nikola Mirotic is keeping his name in the NBA draft, according to his agent Igor Crespo. "He doesn't want to go through this process again." about 11 hours ago

This is surprising. Draft and stash possibility with #20?
Barring an unexpected last-minute promise from a team in the 1st round, Lucas Nogueira will withdraw from the draft according to his agent.

Apparently he looked pretty bad at Eurocamp.

To recap:
In:
Jonas Valanciunas
Enes Kanter
Jan Vesely
Bismack Biyombo
Donatas Motiejunas
Nikola Mirotic
Davis Bertans

Out:
Lucas Nogueira

If the Wolves keep the 20, I'd be fine with stashing Mirotic. I definitely don't want the 20th pick sitting on the bench next season.

I really like what I read about Mirotic in his DX writeup. Already a pretty gifted shooter at 20 years old and seems to have a pretty nice game. Will be interesting to see where he goes because he does have a Dirk-lite type of upside.

The bad part is that he will likely be in Europe for 4 years as he just signed an extension with Real Madrid. Apparently has a 2 milllion Euro (2.8 mil $) buyout. Don't know about NBA out clauses, but pretty much doubt there is one. So earliest he'd likely be here is 2015-16, unless the amount we can pay in a buyout is changed in the next CBA (Personally I think it should be equal to draft slot, or rookie min for 2nd rounders). Maybe some of our spanish posters can clarify.

I'd be more than OK taking him at 20 and stashing him, if Ronzone and co decide Brooks/Motiejunas aren't as good or they are gone. The LAST thing I want is more crappy bench fodder like Ellington/Hayward with guaranteed rookie scale deals (like DX having us taking Faried).

I'm really starting to take a liking to Jonas. Throw that dudie in the weight room and let's get some W's!

f'ing a on jonas, i pray he somehow finds his way here....if do-mo is miraculously still available at 20 you simply have to take him...he's too talented to turn down...he'll surely be gone in top 15 though.

I've said it before, but it's too easy to picture Jonas finishing off those over the shoulder lobs Rubio likes to throw. Plus length, good hands, mobility, touch around the rim, sound fundamentals and a good motor are a tantalizing combination.
"A while back,'' Cardinal said, "I took a picture of the standings and texted it to Love, just to bust his chops,'' Cardinal said. "He sent me a picture back of a snowdrift.''

THIS. He won't be here this year, but it's not a bad investment, since we basically already got our 1st round pick this year (Rubio)

I'd be happy with Valanciunas if we got fair value for #2. Like a Vesely/Valanciunas draft.

I think if Valanciunas can get his buyout settled that he might actually come over this year...think I read that somewhere.

Bertrans looks to be a real nice possibility at #20 he isnt your typical rail thin euro.. stash him and let him come over in a couple years.. in his eurocamp tryout video Kahn is intensely watching unlike Biyombos where he is talking with someone...

what about Ben Gordon, 8 and a 2012 first for 2 and filler

allows us to get a great 6th man off the bench at SG and also a chance at Jonas who I think fits this team the best in a Joakim Noah role..

Rubio/Ridnour
Wes/Gordon
Beasley/Martell
Love/Randolph
Jonas/Pek

I like what I've seen from Bertans. I'd be happy with him at 20. I like him more than Mirotic. Mirotic looks more developed but Bertans gets his shot off quicker and runs a little better.

If he's not here this year there's a good chance that takes him off our board. Jonas seems like a good prospect, I like him, I just don't know if he has the upside to be the guy I want to end up with when we have the second overall pick.

meh...if drafting him at 2 means that he came over this year, and he had the Ronzone seal of approval and all, I'd probably understand if they did it.

He won't set the world on fire, but he'll round out the starting 5...

Rather draft Williams at 2 though...

All-in-all, Bertans left talent evaluators giddy for the evening All-star game as word was spreading he would play.

Alas, he did play and he looked rather pedestrian in the five-on-five setting. He finished with 7 points on a paltry 3/13 shooting display that included a missed dunk and having gotten blocked twice. He also had a couple unsightly turnovers.

When all is said and done Bertans probably broke even today. He's one of the youngest prospects at the camp at age 18 and clearly one of the most talented. Unless he finds a NBA team that will guarantee selecting him in the first round by the early-entry pullout deadline (4:59 EST, June 13th) he will withdraw his name from the draft and try again next year or beyond.

Considering the excellent situation he's in in Slovenia, and the fact that he'll be playing with the Latvian U-19 national team in the World Championships in his hometown of Riga this July, Bertans is right not to be in any rush to stay in the draft unless he finds a perfect situation for his long-term development.

This was posted by DX yesterday. Today, he entered his name in the draft.

In the afternoon, he worked out for the evaluators at the camp and it was by far the best workout the camp saw. If you'll recall, Biyombo and Monteijunas worked out yesterday and struggled badly. Monteijunas will work out again on day three.

I believe that I've read that Jonny Flynn killed it in workouts for the Wolves...

Would rather have the Wolves take a guy who plays better 5on5 than they do in workouts.

Maybe it was just a bad game for Bertans

At 20 we can afford to take a risk because there won't be many immediate contributors available, much different from Flynn's situation at 6.

Malcolm Lee will be a contributor, as will Marshon Brooks and E'Twuan Moore. Moore is repped to be slipping to the 2nd round. Seems like a steal to me. Too bad we don't have any 2nd round picks, but I'd rather have Beas. :D

In a normal year I would agree with you. But the whole year could be wiped out or we could start playing in January or February like the last lockout, at which point Jonas will be committed to his euro team, and it will be better not to waste a cheap rookie scale year on half a season anyway. Remember he can't pay a buyout until he signs a rookie scale deal, and he can't sign until a new CBA is hammered out. I would be pretty surprised if a new CBA is hammered out before Euro teams start their season. The NFL is in a better situation profit-wise, and they're in what, their 3rd month already. I guess what I'm saying is that it could be a smart choice long-term to stash this year's lottery pick in europe for a season. This is a pick for the future. Next offseason we have Love, Beasley, and Randolph all becoming RFA's. I really think Jonas has a ton of untapped offensive potential, and the potential to be more than a role player Guy is apparently a gym rat, and he shoots 90%+ from the line. Other than the need to put on a little weight, there's not much not to like about the kid.

I've narrowed down my draft night reactions:

Jonas or Biyombo in a trade-down that nets something of value: Fan-frickin-tastic!
Jonas at 2: excited
Biyombo at 2: Intrigued, can see the logic but not the value. But ok with it.
Williams at 2: expected. waiting for other shoe to drop. If nothing drops, disappointed.
Kanter or a guard (even in a trade down). BOOOO. Run Kahn out of town with pitchforks.
