Trade Idea involving N.O./LAC/CLE/TOR

Post#1 » by [RCG] » Fri Jul 15, 2011 6:53 pm

MN out: Beasley, Milicic, Pekovic, '13 lotto-protected Memphis 1st
MN in: $6.3 TPE, $4.8 TPE (cap-space)

Minnesota clears about $15.7 million in salary. These players aren't likely to be part of the long-term core and frees up a lot of minutes for other players. Could sign Nene or a front-loaded contract for Afflalo then have a core of Rubio/Afflalo/Johnson/Love/Williams which is a tailor-made for Dwight with enough cap-space by letting Webster/Miller go or trading them in a S&T to bring back Turkoglu. Either way gives enormous financial flexibility for future moves without hurting the team's core.

NO out: Okafor, $6.3 TPE
NO in: Kaman, Beasley

New Orleans will need to add some scoring punch, add two 20ppg players with a PG who can set them up. Beasley/Kaman are also both expirings' while Okafor has another couple years, so they have flexibility at the end of this year.

LAC out: Kaman
LAC in: Memphis 1st, Pekovic, cap-space

Kaman isn't in the future plans for the Clippers. Receive cap-space now plus add a future 1st.

CLE out: $12.6 TPE (LeBron's)
CLE in: Okafor

Front-court of Okafor, Varejao, Thompson could become the best defensive frontcourt in the league.

TOR out: $4.8 TPE (Bosh's)
TOR in: Milicic

Toronto has been rumored to be looking for a defensive-minded C, move Bargnani to PF.

Thoughts?

A salary dump on the remote chance that we could land Nene, and an even more remote chance at getting Dwight.

Really?

Dwight ain't coming here, and why in the world are we using draft picks and young talent in order to clear cap space that won't be used on an impact player?

I guess I'm just not sold that Beasley/Milicic/Pekovic are worth keeping.

Beasley is inefficient, doesn't play defense, and is approaching a new contract that will likely overpay him because he can score. He has tons of potential but will likely never realize it because he doesn't seem to "get it."

Milicic is an overrated defender just because he is 7' and doesn't contribute much offensively or reboudning. Look at what 6'6" Chuck Hayes did for Houston last year.

Pekovic was crap last year. Way too many dumb fouls and plays much more timid than he should be.

The Memphis future 1st is heavily protected. And the Grizzlies are set to be a playoff team with good young players at each position for the foreseeable future.

None of what the Wolves send out are that great of assets. The total cap-space will likely be much more valuable than the sum of those players. Remember this team has won 32 games the past two years. And why wouldn't the cap-space be used on an impact player? Players will go for money. Milicic/Pekovic are likely to have reduced roles next year. Much rather have Williams than Beasley, I don't get what the fuss is about. Again, this team has won 32 games the past two years, I don't think "stay the course" is the best option.

1.) Too complicated to ever even be discussed.

2.) There are strict rules on how a TPE can be dealt. I am not sure if this trade is even legal.

3.) Horrible value. We have shown that we will not take on big contracts with the cap space. If we wanted to we would have at the deadline. We had the chances but did not want to take on money.

I'm not sure anyone really makes out well there.

Wolves get empty cap space that has rarely done them any good.
Toronto gets a low percentage offense center that is a poor rebounder, good shot blocker, and mediocre defender (really doesn't help their situation).
Cavs get another no offense defensive big to pair with their existing two (only this one is on a bad contract)

Pretty much only NO gets better, but it takes a lot more than that to swing a 4 team trade.
