Timberwolves Top players All-time

Post#1 » by Foye » Sat Jul 30, 2011 8:59 am

The lockout bores me...
Vote for the top 20? Timberwolves players.

Rules: 1st to 5 or best of 10.

We might as well skip nr. 1 because everyone knows who it is....Michael Olowokandi obviously is the choice here.

1. Garnett (1 000 000)
2. Sam Cassell (1)

I had alot of trouble here, Cassell was only here for a short time but he was damn good for that time.

Other than him I had Googs and Love.

2. Love (3) Cassell (1)

Cassell also bears a lot of responsibility for poisoning the Wolves only real title contender too.

2. Love (4) Cassel (1)

Sidenote: I actually think Big Al was a better player in a Wolves uniform than Cassel was. Maybe Cassel had a better season in 2003/04 than any seasons Big Al had but once you factor in that Al had literally no help, whereas Sam I Am had KG, I think Al was the better Timberwolf. Also, Al played more seasons in Minneapolis.

Thus, if we skip to the 3rd best player, my vote goes to Big Al.

Hate to get off topic (feel free to delete this post mods) but what title contender did he poison?

Way I see it, the trades for Cassell and Spreewell was a 1/2 season shot (at best) we came close. If anything, Mchale and his Cassell/Jaric trade poisoned us way worse than Cassellk ever did.

1. Garnett
2. Love
3: Wally (1)

Szczerbiak did a bit more to our organization for a much longer period. That's why I'll give him the nod at 3.

During the 2003–04 NBA season, the Timberwolves became the team to beat in the Western Conference. They finished the season as the top seed in the Western Conference with a record of 58–24, and beat the Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings in the first two rounds of the NBA playoffs. Kevin Garnett leapt upon the scorer's table upon the completion of Game 7 in the Sacremento series, one of the more defining moments in franchise playoff history. Unfortunately, the Timberwolves' run ended in the Western Conference finals as the team lost to the Lakers, the previous Minnesota franchise. Due to an injured hip, Sam Cassell played only sparingly during the series with the Lakers. Kevin Garnett finally earned his first MVP award with 24.2 points, 13.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.

The Timberwolves conduct pre-game warm-ups at their home arena, the Target Center.
In the 2004–05 season, the Wolves kept the same team from the previous season. The team was plagued with contract disputes and the complaining of key players Latrell Sprewell, Sam Cassell, and Troy Hudson. Coach Flip Saunders was replaced in midseason by GM Kevin McHale, who took over the team for the rest of the season. The Timberwolves finished 44–38, and missed the playoffs for the first time in eight years

I would add that in the summer of 2004, there were several predictions from the national media saying the Wolves were the favorites to win it all next season. They had had another terrific regular season, and without injuries that plagued many of their players, they may have won in 2004.

However, the mercurial Cassell demanded to have his contract extended (something he promised Taylor he would not do during the season), and posioned the attitude of the entire team, and was instrumental to getting Flip Saunders fired. This was sheer greed and dishonesty, and I think people ignore it because of one season of success (though his injuries let us down in the playoffs of that year as well) and he was a fun player to watch.

And if you hate the Cassell/Jaric trade so much, you need to at least put part of that blame on Sam for killing his own trade value. He had just demonstrated he was old, injured, and a team cancer - AND we were forced to move him. No teams were going to take him on without incentive. McHale just gave up too much.

3. Wally Szczerbiak (3), Terrell Brandon (1), Tom Gugliotta (1), Al Jefferson (1), Marbury (1)

Tough call for #3 I think, and any of these choices would be good ones. I will add though that I'm happy to see that voters are smart enough to remember the pre-injury abilities of Wally. 50/40/90 is tough to do.

Marbury is obviously the more talented player but he's been a douche. I just can't vote for him. :D
