Why is Derrick Williams on this team?

The guy plays for 12 minutes a game. If Rick is going to bench him for 3/4s of the game, trade him.

It really doesn't make much sense does it? Beasley is getting his minutes, but they have more invested in Derrick with the #2 overall pick. Let's be honest this team isn't doing anything anytime soon. If they make the playoffs it would be a huge accomplishment.

They need to find out what they have in Derrick before his confidence is shattered, if it's not already. You do that by giving him consistent minutes each night, and if he doesn't show any progress then you can bench him.

Adelman wants to play the best of what he has, but at the same time you don't jeopardize your future in doing so.

Maybe they're showcasing Beasley for potential trade partners, I don't know? I feel bad for the kid though.

I'm not concerned. If it wasn't for Rubio completely exceeding all expectations Rubio would probably be in the same position Williams is now in. Wait for the end of the season. Derrick will get much more minutes then.

Because we drafted the best available player in last years draft. Because he's only 20 years old. Why trade him? I don't see any reason to trade Derrick William's unless we get a quality veteran with a good, long term contract or a young player who can start every night and give us great minutes at the SG or C position. What team would trade either one of those type of players for an unproven rookie? I don't know.

That an under-skilled, undersized tweener like Derrick Williams was a bust waiting to happen was perhaps the worst-kept-secret in last year's NBA Draft. his best-case-scenario is an Al Harrington clone. I don't think he'll be that good.

How exactly is he under-skilled and under-sized? He has very high potential. He's actually pretty similar to Kevin Love, omly more athletic. Once he gets his shot down he can be very, very good.
He's already shown he's not intimidated at this level; he's aggressive, not afraid to shoot or drive, is very athletic, can hit the three (but needs work as did Love his rookie year), he's a hard-worker and I'm excited to see what he does with the season and off-season of experience and work under him.
The Wolves have Beasley, Tolliver, Randolph, Webster all potentially gone after this year. It would be foolish to trade him now. What if all of those guys leave? Then we have major minutes to fill at SF and PF behind Love.

So you're saying anyone who only plays 12 mpg should be traded?

Nah, I think what he meant is that if you invest so much in a guy (nÂș2 draftpick) you should use him a little bit more and give him confidence and quality minutes, or else you should trade him before his trade value goes down.

The thing is that it looks like we still don't know what the plan with D.Will is. Is he gonna be our backup PF? Is he gonna be a SF? Will we keep Beas? Will we make a major trade before the deadline, or be part of a 3 way deal and land some big name?....

I think it might be time to know what is the master plan. Or maybe we are just waiting to see how the team ends up the season and analize, if further on we are able to gel as a team with defined roles for everyone, if we have a solid core with no needs for major changes; then take decisions.

Time will tell.

We are 22 games into his rookie season, why do we need to know exactly what the plan is for him?

I think he's on the team because we drafted him with the 2nd pick of the 2011 draft. I'll have to fact check that with my sources, though. :brb:

The problem is DWill is a PF... not a SF. I, and a large number of other people, thought/hoped he could play both SF and PF around the draft, but Adelman himself has stated that he's a PF. If he can't play SF and the PF is locked down by Kevin Love and his 38 minutes per game, there's not a whole lot of opportunity for him. I still think he's going to be a very good player in this league and has all the potential in the world, but he has no place on our team and it would be in our best interest to trade him for a player of comparable skill/value at a position of need. I know this name has been discussed at length elsewhere, but if you could get a player like Eric Gordon (comparable skill/value) and plug him in for 35 minutes per night at SG, that would be WAAAAY more useful to this team than 10-12 minutes of DWill backing up Love.

He was the right pick because he was the BPA, but I really don't see why people are so intent on keeping him. The only thing I can think of is they still think he can play SF, but I just don't see it.

Williams could in the future play SF in this league I think. BUT, right at this very point in time, he's more of a stretch PF. He'll need to cut a few pounds, gain experience, hone in those wing (dribble) skills, but the guy has it in him, you can tell.

It's just so early, and this year is so different. Who knows, if they were actually able to practice, perhaps he would have already been farther along. I think before this season is over, we will hear more from Derrick Williams, I'll tell you that.

What's really ironic is that I didn't know you were "everyone"'s spokesman.

Tried reading this post 6 times, but got distracted by your avatar. Then I got to "was a bust" and had to make another 6 attempts before finishing.

I don't agree with the post though as he was probably the most NBA ready player in the draft. Problem is his fit right now is at PF which puts him behind one of the best in the game. I do think he should automatically come in for Love when Love sits down, but going to trust Adelman on this one. One season of limited minutes isn't going to drop his value and I wouldn't just trade him for the sake of a marginal upgrade at SG or another position.

My bigger concerns with the team right now are Wes, Ridnour, and Darko starting.
