Rockets fan's question about Mchale...

did Mchale have a hard on for undersized bigs? did he finish the game with an undersized lineup, or more specifically, an undersized pf playing center who's small enough to play small forward? and if the center on the team was having a beast game, would he still finish the game with the undersized pf at center who's small enough to play small forward?

My head hurts.
Patrick Patterson can't play SF though.

Love + Jefferson, but other than that no, not that I recall. As a GM he was always trying to bring in 7 footers, but none of them ever really worked out.

So then you're saying Kevin Love is small enough at 6'9" 240?
Just because LeBron can play SF, doesn't mean other guys that size can play the position.

He's just saying a guy that's undersized as a PF is masquerading as a C. He's not saying Patterson can play SF.

It's hard to say. The team never had much in the way of Cs, so they usually did play undersized. His most recent stint saw him going small on the perimeter a bit but that was probably more the personnel than any philosophy he might have had.
So the short answer is no, but the sample size is small and he never really had a decent big to snub like that. So...yeah, hope that helps.

ok well how about this...when one of your centers was having a really good game, maybe one of his best games of the season, made a huge impact on the game, was he benched in the final 5+ minutes of the 4th qtr?

No, at least I don't think so, though you have to look at the context.
His first coaching stint here a good game for our C was something like 5 points and 3 rebounds. And during his second go 'round, our C was Al Jefferson, who was never benched because he was the only offence we had (and the team had no other Cs).
Sorry, this probably isn't helping.

i get that you didnt have great centers, but what i meant was if any center was playing so well that he had a huge impact on the game, did he get benched at the end of the game (presuming it was a close game)

I'll say no. His rotations were all right, IIRC, it was everything else he sucked at (plays, GMing, fashion, etc).

That doesn't surprise me. McHale sees players as either guards or post players with the SF position being a flex position for one or the other. He had a number of flaws as a GM, but that mentality was a major one and I'm not surprised it is having an influence on his coaching especially for rotations. This is why McHale loves combo guards in place of pure point guards who can run a team and why he falls in love with too many PF's. However, he really wants added length on that team which was the major push for the Gasol trade, so it is not entirely his fault.
For a past observation, the above thinking is why McHale thought Love and Jefferson could coexist in the starting lineup since both were legitimate post players. Obviously he was wrong.

I would say he had a hard on for big, plodding centers if anything.
If he's playing Patterson at C, I'd say there is a good reason. McHale's got plenty of faults, but he's not a terrible coach.
Edit:
I hate to say this, but maybe Camby is a little injured and McHale was protecting him. He's got a pretty long history of injuries.

dalembert was having a beast game, one of his best for the **** season. in 24 minutes he got 9rbs and 7blks, only 2 fouls and no turnovers. he was on his way for a season/career high game. but for some reason mchale decided to go with the undersized pf who's small enough to play sf patrick patterson (he's dealing with injures/confidence issues the whole season btw)
i dont see the logic in benching dalembert on a game like that, in place for someone who's not at 100% physically and mentally, at the single most important part of the season. if i had seats near the rockets bench i would be screaming at mchale to put dalembert back in the game
this 6 game losing streak wouldnt exist if he finished the **** games with our **** centers instead of some small ass piece of ****
