Ellington for Cunningham is official

Post#1 » by jpatrick » Fri Jul 13, 2012 5:37 pm

A Memphis beat writer is saying that Wolves/Griz talking trade w/ Ellington going to Memphis. Hollinger suggest Dante Cuningham is the target. Their salaries pretty much line up so I don't see this as a salary dump unless we flip Cuningham, so would this be aquiring a combo forward as a precursor to a DWill trade or simply balancing out our roster a bit?

Could be a Tolliver-esque replacement

Makes sense. We need defense for sure.

Think it's just a way to try to clear capspace in what might or might not be a precursor to an offer sheet being submitted. They just said that Grizz would like to swap Cunningham. Didn't see it say we were interested in Cunningham.

This would actually add about 7k to your cap

I like this guy on our team. He was a guy at the beginning of the offseason I wanted us to look at.

Yeah, I would see this as a move done after the other stuff is done, and probably as an alternative to re-signing Tolliver for frontcourt depth. Cunningham looks to be a solid or better defender off the bench who wouldn't kill you on offense.

OJ Mayo is one of the best defenders in the league, hes a two way player and hes a great passer and playmaker.

If it is true, its more likely a precursor to us adding 2 SG's to our roster(Shved, Roy) and possibly another(Lee, Mayo, etc, etc, etc). Add Budinger ability to play there, and even Ridnour...and you have Ellington as our 6th or 7th best SG. Cunningham however would fill our Tolliver role, with his reportedly looking to move on.

Or its just a precursor to a memphis beat reporter just trying to fill his mandatory daily blog space with anything.

Exactly. Cunningham's salary is essentially what we'd pay Tolliver, with a similar production rate. I expected Wayne to be gone, and this is decent value. An extra 2nd would be nice too, but not necessary.

Wayne was pick 28 in 2009, Dante was pick 33.

I really liked Cunningham when he was in Portland. You won't get a lot, but you get a solid back up. Someone who can hit the mid range jumper, plays decent defense and grab some rebounds. I love the way this kid boxes out on the boards... very old school compared to most of what we see nowadays. This is a good find if it works out.

Don't mind the trade either way. Makes more sense if Derrick Williams is being moved but even if he isn't it looks like we should have more than enough SGs on the team, especially compared to bigs.

Told Ellington to Memphis for Cunningham is just about done. Verbal agreement is in place. Just have to submit paperwork.
