MIN - TOR - DET
I thought I'd bring this over from the trade board - a post I made about five weeks ago.
MIN GIVES: Ridnour + Barea
MIN GETS: Calderon
TOR GIVES: Calderon
TOR GETS: Barea + Daye + $3 mil TPE savings + 2nd
DET GIVES: Daye + 2nd
DET GETS: Ridnour
Why for MIN? Calderon provides an upgrade for the win-now wolves. He's a legitimate NBA starting PG for the first few months of the season until Rubio gets back, insurance if it takes him longer to get to full speed, and he's a better back-up for the rest of the year. While weak defensively, Calderon is a great passer which would help the team be ready for Rubio's return. Calderon can handle lots of minutes. The Spanierd could also help mentor Ricky for the rest of the year -- he doesn't need more years of mentoring from Ridnour.
Calderon (8.8 APG, 10.5 PPG in 2011) is overpaid now ($10.56 now, $11.6 with a 10% trade kicker), and costs Glen Taylor an extra $3 mil, but his deal comes off the books at the end of the year and he'd shed all the future salary of Ridnour and Barea. Calderon has hinted he wants a change of location after the Lowry acquisition, and MIN may be the one NBA team where he'd displace the current starting PG (Ridnour) - even if its only for a few months - and maybe get to play for his next contract. Next year, Calderon expires, and Shved should be ready for more back-up PG minutes with more court time now. Finally, the Wolves add a 15th man roster spot, and get a 2nd.
(Rubio)/Calderon/Shved/Conroy
Roy/Shved/M Lee
Kirilenko/Buddinger
Love/Williams/Cunningham
Pekovic/Steimsma
Why for TOR? The signing of Kyle Lowry to be their starting PG has frustrated Calderon, and financially, they don't need a $10.56 mil PG coming off the bench. Barea's $4.5 mil fits their payroll nicely. Daye was promising two years ago, but when DET kept Tayshaun Prince, he made a major step backwards last year. TOR would get a look at a young player who might prosper in a new location, and even if he doesn't Daye is expiring. Finally, TOR saves $3 mil this year, or a "tradable" TPE.
Lowry/Barea/Lucas
Fields/Anderson/Ross
Derozan/Kleiza/Daye/McGuire
Bargnani/Amir Johnson/Ed Davis/Acy/Wright
Valanciunas/Gray
Why for DET? After last year's poor play, Daye needs a change of scenery. He's not useful to the Pistons, but they have a big hole at back-up PG, with Brandon Knight starting and Wil Bynum as their 3rd stringer. Ridnour can not only give them legitimate minutes at the 1 and 2, but he can adopt a mentoring role for the young Brandon Knight. Financially, Ridnour is worth his $4 mil as a back-up PG/SG and he expires in two years, with Villanueva and Stuckey.
Knight/Ridnour/Bynum
Stuckey/Kim English
Prince/Maggette/Singler
Jerebko/Maxiel/Villanueva

I'm kind of liking Barea right now. I don't think I want to salary dump him anymore. Ridnour can go though.

Re: MIN - TOR - DET
Rather have JJ, small contract for a few years, just good value plain and simple.
Ridnour should be traded what we get is a matter of what we want, but I tend to think savings is the way they will go, unless packaged with D-Will at which point they will want savings (not specifically expirings) and a "lottery" pick.

So we get rid of one ball dominant useless point guard in Ridnour...
For an even more expensive ball dominant useless point guard in Calderon...
all the while giving up the only sparkplug player we have?
Horrible does not express how bad this is.

What part of "he's an expiring contract" didn't you understand?

Barea and Ridnours deals are not horrible, Ridnour could be moved because he has perceived value as a backup. (We know better)
Barea actually brings something to this team.
Calderon would only add to the culture of losing we are trying to break.
No thanks.

Re: MIN - TOR - DET
The key is that you have to have a role on a specific team to be worth your contract. That's true for Calderon (paid too much for back-up minutes in TOR) as it is for Ridnour and Barea.
Sure, Ridnour and Barea are worth $4 -$4.5 mil to teams that need a good back-up PG next year. That's probably not MIN though. They'll have Rubio and Shved to be back-up PG in the $4 mil range, and they'll probably pick up a 3rd string PG for the minimum like Conroy. To MIN, the fact that Calderon expires give them the extra financial room that allows them to re-sign Pekovic, Buddinger, the 1st, and pay the full MLE .. and still stay just under the lux.

You still don't get it.
They need money to re-sign PEK.
Actually, let me repeat it.
THEY (as in this guys):

NEED (as in "desperatly require")
MONEY (a.k.a. pesos, green, cheese, bread etc)
TO RE-SIGN
THIS GUY:

also Calderon is a better player than both Luke and Barea, so, you know, win-win.

And I am saying there will be better options than this to get the cap space we need.
Calderon is about equal to Ridnour = Both suck.
Barea will be a very useful player once Rubio is back because he gives a different look off the bench.

backup PG seems pretty deep; I don't think there's a big gap between Ridnour and Barea and random minimum player looking for a job

Won Spanish Cup. Lost in Euroleague finals. Has like two silver medals from Olympics, gold from World Championship, two silvers from European Championships... This man obviously has loser's mentality.

I think adding Williams to Barea or Ridnour after our injuries return might make more sense than a salary dump.

The only thing Calderon and Ridnour have in common is being good outside shooters.
This would be a great trade for Min IMO. Not sure Toronto does it though, they have Lucas who's proving this season that he might be capable of assuming the backup PG role.

Calderon and Ridnour are different players I agree. Not similar in style, but very similar impact... negative.
