MIN 2013-14 Salary Picture

I thought taking a look at next year's payroll would provide some useful information for the board:

2013-14 Salaries
$13,891,355 Love
$10,219,420 Kirilenko
$5,532,900 Roy (let's assume he plays well, but this salary is not guaranteed)
$5,016,960 Williams
$4,687,000 Barea
$4,320,000 Ridnour
$4,002,120 Rubio
$3,150,000 Shved
$2,575,000 Steimsa
$884,293 M. Lee
$54,279,048 TOTAL - 10 Players

Now, let's assume MIN keeps Pek, Buddinger, Add the MIN 1st (or MEM's) at #18, and use the full MLE.

$11,000,000 Pekovic estimate
$4,000,000 Budinger estimate
$5,150,000 MLE - assuming we stay under the $4 mil apron.
$1,450,000 #18-ish with 20% standard signing bonus
$75,879,048 TOTAL - 14 Players

I don't think Glen Taylor will exceed the lux unless the team is knocking on the doorstep of a championship, and they still have a long way to go. We can debate whether the lux goes up or down when it comes off it's two-year lock, but if it stays around $70.3 mil, it means MIN may try to cut $5.5-$6 mil in salary.

Rubio/Ridnour/Barea
Roy/Shved
Kirilenko/Buddinger
Love/D. Williams
Pekovic/Steimsma
+ 1st + MLE

Clearly, MIN needs to move either Ridnour or Barea (or both, if Shved can be as good as the Olympics), and perhaps Derrick Williams if they get legit value from a team that has the minutes to develop him. Incoming, MIN should focus on the SG position (depending on Roy), and a back-up big, preferably a center.

I'll be pretty surprised if Williams is still here next year. Ridnour + Williams for salary relief (lower-paid player + pick?) would be nice, imo.

I agree, and I was giving you what you wished for as I posted another thread!

broy is a short term solution. we still need to solidify our sg position. shved can maybe be our guy soemday but for now i think hes best coming from bench for now until he gets accustomed.

so mad we didnt get oj or courtney lee :(

budinger is ZzzzZzzzz.. most teams wouldnt even play this guy..

Now that it looks like Brandon Roy may not be on the Wolves next year, and his 2013-14 contract may become unguaranteed, I wanted to readdress next year's salary picture. Note: Some of the numbers have changed slightly as the creators of the three salary spreadsheets get better information. When they differ, majority rules.

2013-14 Salaries
$14,693,906 Love
$10,219,420 Kirilenko
$5,532,900 Roy - not guaranteed
$5,016,960 Williams
$4,687,000 Barea
$4,320,000 Ridnour
$3,678,358 Rubio
$3,150,000 Shved
$2,690,875 Steimsa - team option (one site says partial guarantee)
$2,180,000 Cunningham - team option
$884,293 M. Lee
$51,520,812 TOTAL -11 Players

If we don't keep Roy, Steimsa or Cunningham:

$41,117,037 TOTAL - 8 Players

Now, let's assume MIN keeps Pek, Buddinger, Add the MIN 1st (or MEM's) at #18, and use the full MLE.

$11,000,000 Pekovic estimate
$4,000,000 Budinger estimate
$5,150,000 MLE - assuming we stay under the $4 mil apron.
$1,450,000 #18-ish with 20% standard signing bonus
$62,717,037 TOTAL - 12 Players

The lux is tough to estimate, but if it stayed at $70.3, Glen Taylor would have plenty of room, even if he kept Ridnour and Barea.

Rubio/Ridnour/Barea
???/Shved/Lee
Kirilenko/Buddinger
Love/D. Williams
Pekovic/???
+ 1st + MLE

I don't see Cunningham let go and i don't see Williams being on the team. I hope the trade him for a SG type.
I can see Steam being released. Not sure if using MLE is a good idea, usually contract year scrubs are signed to these deals.

I was surprised to see our base salary at $41 mil for 8 players, and I started to dream of free agency. However, the cap room won't be as nice. Pekovic will have completed his third year with us, and is a Larry Bird free agent, paid less than the average salary, so his cap hold is 190% of his previous salary ($9.2 mil). We'll also have cap holds for the minimum roster number of 13,

$41.1 - 8 players
$9.2 - Pek cap hold
$2.0 - 4 cap holds at $0.5 mil
$52.3 mil

The salary cap was at about $58 mil, so if we renounced the MLE, we'd have $5.7 mil left under the cap, and could make an offer of about $6.2. This may become important, since it's about $1 mil more than all the other over-the-cap teams can offer with the 2013 MLE ($5.15).

Moreover, I could certainly see a trade this year that could move Ridnour, Barea and/or Derrick Williams, that could add even more 2013 cap space. Cunningham looks like a bargain at $2 mil next year, but if MIN targeted cap space, they could make a play - even if they sign Pek. It may also make Glen Taylor more willing to entertain SG's that have larger salaries in 2013 as well.

This is not rocket science ... at a minimum

B.Roy - Gone
L.Ridnour or JJB - Gone
D.Williams - Gone
-$15 million

We will work to resign Bud & Cunnungham to affordable contracts, and keep Pek. From there everything else will need to work itself out.

2013/2014 Outlook
1-5: Rube/Shved/AK47/Love/Pekasaurus
5-10: JB or LR/Bud/DC/LA/Steemer
11-12: Lee/Amundson

Nice to see you back shrink :-)

Cuban was saying a couple months ago that he expected the luxury tax to start at $73 million, perhaps as high as $75 million, next season. So the wolves may have a bit more wiggle room...

Regarding the $11m estimate for Pek

Just wanted to understand how this figure is arrived at?

Does anyone know which teams are out there with enough room next year that are desparate for a centre?

Is Portland the likely F.A threat ? Could they bid as revenge for Batum?

Forget Batum, they could bid cause they don't have a legit starting center. Leonard looks good but extremely raw yet and Hickson is just a good role player.

It's best to compare him with some other free agents centers

asik: 3/25
mcgee: 4/44
lopez: 4/61
hibbert: 4/58

i don't expect him to get the max, but it's not easy to predict a centers salary during free agency. atlanta and portland are probably the biggest threats.

If they offer max to Pek I'd settle for Leonard sign & trade.

I would LOVE that! He's got a skillset to excel under Adelman!

i'm an advocate of acquiring tony allen in the offseason simply because he's one of the best perimeter defenders in the nba. perimeter defense is something that our bench is clearly lacking and that will become more noticeable if the team ever manages to make the playoffs.

compared to what some of the other free agents are going to make next year, allen would be a relatively cheap solution for a large problem. we don’t need him to provide much on the offensive end. We just need to harass the best shooters in the league. just look at sefolosha. He rarely scores and doesn’t facilitate, but he managed to start over harden in the past and starts over martin today.

Without discussing picks or young backups:

- Blake, Meeks, Raja Bell to Minnesota
- Williams to L.A.
- Barea to Utah

How does that work for ya?

I don't think there is enough value here to include Williams, and probably not Barea. Do any of the incoming players even have positive trade value?
