MIN - TOR - DET .. More excitement!

I noticed on the trade board that a smart TOR poster is reaching the conclusion I came to a few months ago -- that Calderon is not a fit with the Raptors. Here's his post:

Dr Positivity wrote:I think the time is finally right for Detroit to trade for Jose Calderon. He'd fit into their lineup like a glove allowing them a 3 guard rotation of Calderon, Knight and Stuckey, with Knight transitioning to a 2 guard role beside Calderon. Then there's the fact that they have the Maggette contract, an almost identical expiring to Calderon's

Also Toronto really needs to trade Calderon. Having Lowry, Calderon and Lucas III in the rotation is leading to a double PG lineup, while Ross (who'd otherwise be backup 2) is thus out of the rotation. The team has one too many Jose Calderons. We're not putting Maggette in the lineup though. Team supports ball movement

Who can possibly complete the Calderon, Maggette, Mal Pornagrafía expiring sh*t sandwich deal?

A 3-team Calderon trade with TOR - DET - ??? reminded me of my much-discussed trade from a few months ago, but this one has an interesting spin, sending Calderon to DET. Calderon as a starter there makes some sense, so I played with the old trade, and came up with something interesting:

TOR GIVES: Calderon (exp)
TOR GETS: Barea + $6.1 mil TPE

DET GIVES: Maggette (exp) + Andre Drummond
DET GETS: Calderon (exp) + Derrick Williams

MIN GIVES: Derrick Williams + Barea
MIN GETS: Andre Drummond + Maggette (exp)

Why for TOR? Calderon needs to go - he simply can't justify that salary in back-up minutes. Barea (or Ridnour, I don't care) is well-worth his salary so they are getting a piece with better trade value. TOR may blanche at losing cap space next season, however they would need to pay "somebody" to play back-up PG, and Barea is a reaosnable. Better yet, they they save $6.1 mil right now, and get that TPE.

Why for DET? Calderon is overpaid, but he's certainly a better player at the same price than Maggette right now. Calderon would become the starter, and mentor Brandon Knight. Drummond, the 9th pick in draft, is exciting, but center is the one position DET already has a star in, with Greg Monroe. Williams seems like a nice fit in DET. They want young upside players like Drummond, but their starting PF is Jason Maxiel and SF is Tayshaun Prince. Yuck.

Why for MIN? Does Williams still carry trade value close to Drummond? If so, Drummond might be a nice fit. He's got good upside, he's cheap, and he saves us the money necessary to sign Pek, Buddinger, MLE and 1st, and still stay under the lux (see other post on finances). Drummond fits our need for a third center. Maggette will have limited usefulness besides his expiring, but I imagine he can still play 15-20 minutes of driving to the hoop and picking up fouls. The deal though is for a good center prospect and moving long-term salary to get the financial flexibility we'll need next year. For me, the questions are - can we get by at PG until Rubio gets back, and does Williams still have the trade value for this?

Also, there is no chance in Hell (or in Heaven, or on Earth, or in some **** up alternate dimension) that Detroit does this.

Probably best to not vote in their poll. As an insurance policy, I'll just post the current results now...

I think a more realistic route may be going after Stuckey and Prince. I'm not a cap expert though so I'm not sure if it would just put us in a tough spot cap wise. Maybe going after one of them.

Williams and Ridnour for Stuckey would work for me if we can't get both.

Minnesota can do better, but if it were to go down I would want Luke sent out rather than JJ.

Unbelievable. They understand there was a reason Drummond fell to 9th, right?

Keep in mind that's the same board with a Stuckey or Harden? topic on page 1.

If we added an unprotected 1st Detroit still says no.

Wow - I don't know which is worse!

One of the frustrations I have here (and I suppose it applies to any internet board) is that the loudest and most frequent posters are not always the most realistic. There have been certain team forums that have become more fan-boards than realgm boards. When people keep hearing unrealistic views, they start believing them and it subverts the forum. Over the years, there have been a handful of teams on the Trade Board that I never posted deals for, because the general representatives from that team are so biased, that I can't get realistic information from them.

I understand the irony that I'm posting this in a thread where I propose that Derrick Williams value is close enough to the #9 pick that downgrading from Maggette to Calderon makes up the difference. In my defense, Derrick Williams remains one of the players that has the greatest room for individual opinions varying on his trade value. I think you'd find that same variance within the MIN forum as there is across RealGM. I suppose that with Love out, this is just another case where we finally see the young lotto pick get minutes, and we have to wait and see what he will do with them.
