WHY FOR LAL? A straight up deal for Bargnani and Calderon can be done today. Bargnani is probably a better fit under D'Antonio, but Calderon is very expensive - especially if you have to pay lux tax on top of it. By changing Calderon's $11 mil for Barea's $4.5, the Lakers save $13 mil - improtant when they have other, worse PG's on the team like Steve Blake and Chris Duhon. Barea would also fit D'Antoni's system, and give LAL confidence to keep Nash rested for the play-offs.
WHY FOR TOR? I don't know why they'd want Gasol, but the price tag is a closer fit. Calderon is a good player, but he can't come close to meeting his $10.5 mil contract as a second stringer. However, if they move Calderon, they don't have a legitimate #2 PG. Ridnour is the right skill level, and the right price.
WHY FOR MIN? MIN gets a small upgrade at PG, and a player that can play in a similar style to Rubio for team consistency. He may make for a good mentor as a fellow Spanierd who - best of all, disappears after this season. Taylor overpays a bit for Calderon this year, but gains cap space in 2013-14 for Pek or even a shot at other free agents. PG - particularly back-up PG - is becoming a crowded NBA market .. we can probably get ONE just as good a back-up PG on a decent contract -- maybe Calderon re-signs.
