Taylor Willing to Go Over the Lux!

Post#1 » by shrink » Fri Dec 7, 2012 8:15 pm

This probably belongs in the Pau Gasol thread, but it is such a big deal, that I wanted to bring it out here:

Doogie wrote:Until Gasol is moved, count the Timberwolves as heavily interested. In fact, the source said ownership is willing to go over the luxury tax for the 2013-14 season if need be. Gasol is guaranteed $19,285,850 next year.

This opens up so many possibilities for deals with MIN to many teams, but since we're talking about Pau Gasol at the moment, I wanted to re-state my position:

I can't see a deal that is fair value if it contains Pek. Pek is easily worth his $4.8 mil contract - Gasol is easily not worth $19.65 mil. Next year, Pek will be worth his contract - if he is overpaid, we don't need to match. Gasol will be overpaid, at $20+ mil.

If Pek is NOT in the deal, then we may be able to come close enough in trade value to make a deal fly. However, if we re-signed him, it would leave us so close to the lux that we'd struggle to handle some of the other issues that might cost money, like:

Re-sign
Use the MLE
Pay for our MEM/MIN 1st
Fill the roster with 13-15 players
Keep cheaper contracts like Cunningham or Steimsma
Bring over Bjelica

However - if Taylor is willing to dismiss the lux, that all changes. I'm still going to flinch if we make a deal to add a $20 mil Pau Gasol, but I won't flinch as bad.

In that case I am all for getting Gasol in the scenario where we keep Pekovic.

If a deal doesn't cost us the ability to sign Pek, Chase and possible pick, not a big deal. It scares me if we don't do that. It also is problematic, that we would need to likely trade four contacts, William, Ridnour, JJ, and Roy to get it done, which depletes the back-court to bolster a position of strength.

Moreover, that is a ton of production to give up to get less back and reduce the production of the players we do have at that position, it leans heavily on Shved as our perimeter offense.

If he really wants to go over the lux, get a killer SG and a better back-up center.

I like!

Although I'm a bit surprised by this considering he's looking to sell the team. He either wants to go all in short term or he's found a buyer who has the same mindset (which I'd obviously love to see).

He's stilll gonna be majority owner for 2-3 years probably, no matter when he sells.

I doubt Taylor said something about this.

The quote does say, "the source." For our international fans, I'll mention that ESPN1500 is one of the local Minneapolis sports radio stations.

Since I've asked for just such a Christmas present for two days leading up to Doogie's article, I'm just going to believe this source is right. As I have been saying for days, Taylor going over the lux is really the only way that a Pau Gasol rumor makes any sense for MIN.

Thanks.

Then, if "the source" is reliable and has said this about the next season, I deduce that it means that Pau must to be buying winter clothes now, and he will play for the Wolves this season and the next. Why the hell the Wolves are going to think about the next season if they aren't going to sign him now?

Well, we go to know soon if that source is reliable.

Not bad at all.

Pek would be the perfect center to come off the bench for us. We can't rely on Steamer every night. I just don't see the Lakers moving Gasol for Derrick Williams.

I know of a better aged PF/C who's team is mediocre and maybe looking for some expiring contracts to make a splash in 2013-14. Garnett. Pek, Roy and Amundson would make it happen if the C's are interested. Wouldn't it be awesome to see him win a championship here and go into the hall as a Wolf?

Yeah, Garnett would never voluntarily come here as long as Papa Glen is the owner. Too many burned bridges and all that.

However, considering how 'disloyal' Ainge is rumored to be as a GM it wouldn't surprise me if he actually dealt KG for the right package.

Garnett does have a no-trade clause so if he really hates Taylor that's not happening. But, he's not going to win another championship with the Celtics and he'd have a very good chance here. I don't see why he'd hate Taylor who gave him the opportunity to win a ring. I could see if he traded him to Toronto, but Glen and McHale gave KG a gift. Now they have a team that can win, why wouldn't he come back?

Garnett has a no-trade clause as well? Looks like I missed that.

I don't think KG considers us a legit playoff, let alone championship contender, anyway so the personal issues are too much to outweigh the positives here.
