Why Trade?
There are a lot of talks about trades on this forum. I may be one of the very few that feel this way, but I'm ust putting it out there: Why trade?
I would much, much rather have a cheap, healthy Pek than an old, expensive Pau Gasol with tendinitis in his knees. There would be nothing to motivate me to trade for Pau Gasol.
Then, there's the SG position. Malcolm Lee has been showing that he can hit the open shot. He also plays very solid defense. I think everyone on this forum can agree that Shved is a good SG. So why trade for guys like Wes Matthews or Courtney Lee?
I would also like to hold on to Derrick Williams. he is a tweener PF, which is why he will take a little longer to develop. If he stays patient, and we stay patient with him, he could end up being a very good player.
Ridnour and Barea have proven that they are solid backup PGs. Once Rubio is back, we will be just fine at that position.
So I ask again, why make any moves right now? I am in favor for playing the season out and watching how our team plays at full strength, and then assess moves that need to be made.

Re: Why Trade?
Because when your team has a window you have to go all in. As an outsider who is a fan of your team, I think a legit two guard is definitely needed. Shved looks like he could grow into that but right now he currently isn't.

So that the fan boys have something to dissect ad nauseum for the next month or so.
The truth is that if a move makes us better, then yes you make the trade. But your post is more about reasons that the Wolves should not trade X or for Y.

I don't consider any of the guys we could potentially get to be a huge window of opportunity. Shved and Lee are effective enough at the 2. Why throw away pieces we already have to make minor improvements?

Ridnour and Barea are not solid, I'm sorry. They get absolutely roasted almost every night on both ends. Luke is steadier and probably the better shooter but JJ can't be effective as a floor general for more than sporadic moments, he just is too small and selfish. Luke dribbles the shot clock down and forces Love or Shved to chuck up a hopeless shot way too much and has no ability to penetrate. JJ is so careless with the ball it is no wonder Dallas let him go just months after he played great in the finals. One of em could work as Ricky's backup but together I think they are a huge liability. Also, they do not get Pek the ball in good spots and neither is the shooter we desperately need to start scoring better down the stretch. They have been, in a word, exposed. Time to move one and decide which one to keep (if that) and bring in an athlete who can hit a three who won't demand the ball. Sounds like a lot but every other team it seems has one of those guys sitting unused on their bench. Lee, and Shved can man the point in a pinch if need by.
We need a 2 quite urgently if we want to be a serious playoff team. Not even a Wes Matthews type player but just a body that can defend and knock down an open outside shot. Shved will be that guy and more soon enough but he is too new to the league to rely upon just yet. I pray Adelman ends the two PG thing when Ricky returns as I'd rather have Lee or Shved out there as they at least can try and get stops. If we wait for Chase to get back to address this, we might not have a chance to sniff the playoffs. I think the FO knows this though and I bet we find someone that can hold the fort and hide the blatant incompetence we have in the back-court most nights without Ricky. But we do really need to address our backcourt beyond Rubio/Shved as it is beyond atrocious at this point and holding back what I think could be one of the deadliest front-courts out there from making their presence known around the league.

We don't need a trade to stay above water but we do need to consider how much any sort of shooting and athleticism on the wing would do to help the team. Look at Memphis and Denver - great teams who have it all except knock-down shooters. It's not that hard to find a decent shooter who won't ruin chemistry and the flow of the offense. Atlanta alone has like five guys who would be HUGE for us. Trade a PG and a pick if need be and go get one. It is necessary if we want to win more a low playoff seed.
Getting tired of the lack of urgency around the team. We have a freaking awesome core with incredible muscle, finesse, and versatility. Pek and Love are the only front-court out there who can bang with Memphis and can simply terrorize opponents into submission on the glass. AK is, in my opinion, the closest thing to LeBron out there right now and is capable of being the best overall defender we've had since KG. Ricky is a magician whose importance is impossible to articulate. Shved is already a huge asset and will be a deadly piece of the puzzle one day soon. My point is we don't have to settle for Barea's stupid turnovers or Ridnour's long twos any longer. Adelman, AK, Love, Pek all could leave at any point and I don't want to look back and see we never got an important piece of the puzzle because we didnt want to give up Ridnour or Barea. We are good enough to go places right now and without Bud we lack a crucial piece of that puzzle in reliable outside shooting and wing play. Shved can help a bit there and AK too, but that is it and it really won't be that hard to fix if we set our minds to it and sacrifice some expendable skillsets for the better good of the team.

LOL!.
Made me think of something though. The David Kahn method is to make massive changes, and then stick with them through the season to see what we have. Without Rubio, he may not be ready to trade. In fact, he even asked Derrick Williams agent to wait and see how his client plays with Rubio.
Now, maybe he's going to change - speed things up - with Adelman and Kahn needing to make the playoffs. On the other hand, I'm not unhappy to be sitting near 500 on December 7th, considering our injuries. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Luke and JJ are solid backups, which is what he said. The problem is we have been forced to play them as starters where they get burned by actual starter-quality PGs.

Re: Why Trade?
When Rubio gets back either Ridnour or Barea won't play. So it makes sense to at least trade one of those guys. If for some reason they do play, but at SG over Lee/Howard, then we should just trade one of them for a SG.
If AK gets back and Williams doesn't play then it could make sense to trade him too.

I know what he said and I wasn't attacking him, at least not on purpose, I just don't really agree. Together they could get it done, but alone they can't do it. JJ is a terrible passer and can't shoot that well at all. He is great for a few minutes now and then but I hate idea of him being relied upon in any capacity. The random dashes to the basket don't make up for all the horrible passes and poor decisions. Also think he believes he should be a big part of the team and I don't want anything to do with that concept.
Luke, well he might be able to satisfy me as our backup for the rest of this year but only because we have Shved to help. He just isn't good enough at getting others involved. Pek is invisible with Luke and it is not that hard to feed him the ball on the block. He also has been only an OK shooter recently and is the worst defender on the team by a country mile including Love. Like JJ he has those moments that make me think he isn't so bad, but there are a lot of better fits IMO. We need a backup who can shoot. We just need a shooter period and kills me that these two are considered a nice insurance policy when the fact is that they are not helping in the one area we need most. And they are terrible defenders and have been given every chance to help us stay competitive without Ricky and haven't done so. Bring in a shooter who will feed the bigs and buy on the other end. Don't need these two and other teams seem to value them so let's take advantage while we can

I think some if you are missing the point. What I'm trying to say is I don't think it's worth it to give up Williams or Pek for a piece that we don't need. Where would another SG get minutes without taking minutes from Shved and Lee, who have been producing? The only player I absolutely want to get rid of is Barea. The problem is nobody would want him without Williams or Pek. This may be a different story if the players being talked about weren't Gasol, Calderon, etc. I just don't see value there, and I don't want to give up any.
Obviously, Kahn is thinking about getting Rubio to sign a long term deal once his contract expires, but I think he would sign anyway if we just simply played well and made the playoffs, which I think we will with the team we have. I'd wait until closer to the deadline to ship anyone out, and I would still only trade if there was a good opportunity on the table, which there isn't right now IMO.

Well,
1) Once Rubio comes back, one of Barera or Rid instantly becomes an overpaid appendage. &
2)Williams value is dropping here every day he sits in the Adelman doghouse and there seems no way for him to get out of the doghouse while Kevin Love is still on the team.
I agree about Pau, Pek and Shved though.

Re: Why Trade?
I really want Malcolm Lee to be a part of this team. But he isn't very good. He's actually kind of bad msot nights and never would I pass up a chance to get the final piece we need to keep Lee's role. We've come too far for this. But you are damn right about Barea - he is worth more on the market than to us. And I agree 100% about moving Pek or DWill for a big asset like one of the Spaniards as I think we would be getting screwed. Pek and Ricky made basketball fun again last year for MN fans. To me, trading Pekovic would alienate the FO from our young players and set us back five years. Unless he brings in a star, Pek is too good to trade now. But we do need shooting and a SG if only to have in case Shved regresses or Bud struggles to come back. We have no other guys capable of hitting shots on the wing besides AK and he's a unique player and is only now showing that type of range. Go grab a Fred Hoiberg type. If we have to overpay or stunt Lee's growth so be it, because an elite shooter makes stopping Pek/Love/Shved/AK/Ricky almost impossible. Why wait for Bud? lets win now I say.

I like Malcolm but I don't see him as the starting SG long-term (or even medium-term). I do like the Barea-Shved backcourt off the bench. JJ brings instant energy and Shved is Shved. I think if we could package Luke and Derrick for a vet SG of the Rip Hamilton/Redick ilk, it would be a good move and make this team that much more dangerous. Shved can still get his minutes and play the fourth. That's really the only trade I'd be looking to do, though.

Agree with the Wolfen GoKarter. Although I'd actually be okay with trading Barea when Rubio is healthy and running with a Rubio/Shved/Redick backcourt with Lee just getting spot minutes.

Yeah JJ could be a nice piece but only if we never have to use him to run the offense as anything more than a luxury. He is turrible against a good defender and I can't take anymore. But, if Shved and Ricky are locked in and Lee is there I would have JJ as a backup who can cause a little chaos with his penetration and serve as a general pest when Adelman wants it. But please never again let JJ be more than a small part. I'd rather have a less dynamic player who can hit 35+% from deep and be more than a cone of defense. But I get JJ's appeal. Just hate his general persona and that he wont pass to Pek or Shved unless he has to.
