Shrink is going to be pissed. This is worse than when Kahn wasted that partially guaranteed contract for no reason.

Made sense with our salary situation. You just can't add much guaranteed money if you plan to re-sign Pek and Bud.

Kahn gets a lot of flack, but I thought it was a worthy gamble. Though I got to admit, I got suckered in by his trip to Germany to get the magic Basti Blood spinning treatment.

Just to let it be known, you could have traded Roy and still reduced the payroll from the prior year. The difference could be applied to either Bud or Pek.
In other words it makes no sense to not in the very least wait and explore options.
Terrible move!

The difference? Roy only made $5m last year. Pekovic and Budinger will see their salaries increase by roughly a combined $10m. So no, you couldn't fit another guy in by trading Roy and taking back additional salary unless you're willing to sacrifice Pekovic or Budinger.

Do we know other options weren't explored?

Doesn't matter if they were or weren't as long as you have time you have opportunity and we left time/opportunity on the table? off the table? Whatever we took it away as an option.

It was never an option year on the deal. It was just fully unguaranteed

Huh?
Spreadsheet?
Why would I need to?
Roy + Player X = 10mil
You can trade that salary for a player making let's say 8mil and you save 2mil off the previous year.
Do I still need a spreadsheet for that...I guess I am not totally following?
Are you saying we would be up against the LUX? If so that could be true, there would need to be ancillary moves depending on what we do to be below about 72mil. All very doable though.

Haha, most Klomp post ever. Ok, then when would it have become guaranteed?

Heh, I was thinking the same thing. At least So_Money stepped up! To his point, the timing does seem bad barring more info.

July 1st, I would think, but maybe I'm wrong.

You called it.
There is no upside for the wolves to release Roy, when he has value to another team in trade, by providing instant cap relief.
This is another in a series of unwise use of partial and non-guaranteed contracts.
