Less than a week to go: who would you draft?

Post#1 » by Sugarless » Fri Jun 17, 2016 1:16 pm

A very straightforward question: considering the Wolves current situation, assuming no moves are made before or during the draft and regardless of what comes next during the free agency, who would you choose?

I'm not including Ingram and Simmons in the poll because at this point it would be a huge surprise to see any of them fall to number 3, -and obviously none is going to make it to the 5th spot-, but other than that everyone is on the table, no matter who we think will be picked at the 3rd and 4th spots.

Let's see who's the real favorite for the Wolves fan base with just a few days to go.

Bender
Murray
Dunn
Trade down
*Brown~ if wiggs looks as legit as it looks from deep, i move brown up. The kid is the type of defender that thibbs loves at the wing spot.

Hield > Murray > Dunn in that order.

Bender
Hield
Murray
Dunn

My main concern with Bender would be that he's too young. I'm not necessarily fond of waiting 2-3 years for someone to develop, but I think his potential fit is too great to pass up.

No Jaylen Brown in the poll but Sabonis is an option?

To me it's Bender (best fit in terms of position and skills) and then Hield (best fit in terms of readiness to contribute and elite ability in an area of need). It's basically the same I've been thinking from the start, I haven't seen anything new that was strong enough to make me change my mind compared to a full season of basketball.

After those two I don't really care that much. Murray, Dunn, Labissiere... they're all fine as long as it's not Jaylen Brown (*), though I would be disappointed if we passed on Bender or Hield for one of them.

* BTW, I'm just realizing now that Brown is not on the poll...

Yep, just saw it now. Not that big of a deal anyway, that's what the "other" option is for.

Murray

Hield
Dunn

Bender

I am not a Bender fan for Wolves (or in general). From his age, lack of minutes, and the Porzingis affect. Put it this way, take about any of the college players rated 3-12, play them in Europe with limited minutes, peaking the unknown potential tag, giving them the advantage of Porzingis affect and they would all be rated higher than Bender. Oh, and add in Wolves needing a PF, and it screams drafting Darko over Melo and Wade. (No I don't think any player drafted after Bender will hit Melo or Wade level.)

I'd be happy with a number of these draft options, largely because we already have KAT and Wiggins etc. But personally I'd go for Hield.

Hield seems like a safe bet to me.

Murray's measurements worry me, but maybe he's just super good and it doesn't matter, I can't tell.

Bender sounds awesome in theory, but I feel really in the dark about him. A decision will have to be based on minimal tape and a 1 on 0 workout.

Chriss is super intriguing - agile enough to switch, can shoot and do damage off the dribble and above the rim, but that defensive rebounding is a huge red flag.

Dunn I like, but we have Rubio and I think Tyus has shown he has an NBA future too. Doesn't add up to me.

Everybody else I would only consider in a trade-down. I will say that I think Skal might be a beast 5 yrs from now.

I don't really like Hield. I think my preference goes Bender, Murray, Chriss in that order, but I don't have strong feelings about any of them.

The only things I'm really confident about in this draft are that Sabonas will wind up being pretty solid for someone and I have this weird instinctive gut feeling that Taurean Prince is going to turn into a really high end 3 and D guy that can guard 1-4 and shoot.

I'm a bit surprised by Chriss getting two votes already. It's true that he'd make sense position wise, but he's far from the greatest fit for a team that needs so much help on defense and on the boards. I like that he seems to be a very nice guy, and he's got some potential, but right now he's an inconsistent scorer more than anything, not what we need for our rotation with KAT and Gorgui.

I get the Chriss stuff. I'm not his biggest fan, but I understand it and am intrigued. I think the primary reason is that he seems like he'll be a decent shooter and, more importantly, he's mobile enough that he can probably keep up with wings while still having the length and size to cover a more typical 4. Bad defender now, but with the tools to be a good one with coaching. I suspect we're asking Thibs to work some miracles though, functionally assuming anyone who's athletic and long will be turned into a high end defender.

It makes more sense if you, like me, accept that we're probably not getting an instant impact guy in this draft.

I would draft Dunn but I have a feeling the pick will be between Hield/Dunn and we'll go Hield. I expect Murray to go 3 and either Brown or Bender to go 4

I'd be really worried about that - Wolves are already a bottom 3 def rebounding team. Wiggins/Chriss at the forward spots is asking for trouble.
