Initial reaction: Oh no

But seeing it'll use the Saric TPE and not MLE space, it's not quite as bad after all.

I was surprised by the years here. We must really believe in his ability as a shooter.

So they don't give up any player in this deal?

Nope, basically just giving up part of a TPE.

Layman has some of the best hops in the league. He's a very nimble and athletic player, light on his feet with a good motor. He's a fun player to watch when he's on. His 3pt shot has been sub par, but not terrible.

Hopefully a third year team option.

His highlights is all about shooting, yet, he's not good at shooting (from 3)

You noticed that too? I just turned on his highlight video from last year and that's all I'm seeing, despite shooting 32% last year (his career best by 7%)

He can be a good shooter, he just runs really hot and cold. When he's hot, the dude can't miss. When he's cold, he's nearly unplayable and will be missing shots BADDDLY. He'll go for weeks where he's hot and then go for weeks of cold, so at least its not like game to game you won't know what you're getting, but when he hits those shooting skids, he doesn't do enough on the court to warrant playing time.

He's really good on the lob too if you have a PG who can throw it up at the rim for cutters. He's super athletic and will give you some fun plays. His defense is horrid though.

Man, we have a lot of wings lol. Makes me feel like this roster has some more twists and turns to come.

As I was mentioning, its not that he's a "bad" 3pt shooter, he just gets on long hot and cold stretches. On those hot stretches, he'll be going for 40% or more during those games. Once he goes cold, he's like at a 20% or below with BAD misses and he'll keep shooting, which obviously drives his %'s down.

Yep - and only one point guard at the moment.

Teague and Shabazz(unless I missed where we waived him)

One thing I definitely liked from his highlights is his off-ball movement. This is something we saw incorporated a lot more under Saunders, with wings like KBD taking advantage. Guessing Layman will thrive in that area too.

True, but i'm not really counting him until his contract becomes guaranteed.

Based off the comments from DusterBuster (thanks for the info btw!), seems like one of these low risk for a hopefully high return moves that we've assumed our new FO is going to be attempting to undertake more regularly. Sounds like Jake has a fair bit of potential but is struggling with consistency.

looking at his monthly splits, disaster in March from 3pt, every other month was decent enough

fts aren't encouraging though
