Wiggins: "There's not 100 players better than me"

Ahead of the 2019-20 NBA season, ESPN rolled out its annual list of the top 100 players in the league.

Absent from it was Minnesota Timberwolves forward Andrew Wiggins, who doesn't agree.

"I don't really look at that too much, top 100 or not top 100," Wiggins told ESPN on Thursday. "There's not 100 players better than me, so it doesn't matter what people think. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. My job is to come out here and hoop, and that's what I'm going to do."

Wiggins, 24, is looking to have a breakout Year 6 after having heard criticism throughout his career concerning his effort, most notably after agreeing to a $147.7 million max contract extension in 2017. He averaged 18.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists on a career-low 41.2% shooting during the 2018-19 season, which was more focused on the public criticism and trade demands of former teammate Jimmy Butler, the firing of coach Tom Thibodeau and a "personal" element, which he wouldn't detail. He is ready to put those issues behind him.

"I would say I enjoy it more than I did last year because last year was a rough start," Wiggins said. "The joy has always been there. I've never been on the court and not wanted to play."

This needs to stop right now. His only way to bring value is to drive all they way to the rim and attempt dunks, draw fouls at least when he gets clubbed before getting there. Otherwise, small bench role. His role can't be to sit outside shooting if he can't hit them. it's worthless and detrimental from starters minutes. Give Kelan Martin all his minutes and I wouldn't bat an eyelash at this point. He's not even drawing foul shots or hitting the few he gets.

There are 100 players more reliable than this guy for starter's minutes.

I'm just overjoyed that he said he was going to chase an allstar bid this season. Can't wait.

If you were to judge Wiggins on today's game, you'd be hard up trying to find 100 players who are worse than him... and that's being generous.

He HAS the tools, just can't seem to find the consistent drive to always use them to an advantage. He is the epitome of a looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane type of player

At this point, I expect absolutely nothing from him other than that he will regularly chuck us out of games like yesterday.

I mean, it's what he's expected to say. It'd be funny if he said: 'Yeah I know, I suck.' What's not so funny is that it's true. He's hurting the team for years now both with his game and his max contract. It's not even his fault. If someone wants to overpay me, I'm all for it.

I disagree. Step 1 in Wiggins' plan to be a professional basketball player in 3 years is to acknowledge that he is not a top 250 player in the NBA. it's the only way to improve his game. Fooling himself he can play basketball while you can't will have him out of the league in 3 years.

I agree, it would be better, but in the current NBA where everything is about 'confidence', 'killer instinct' and 'alpha mentality' this isn't going to happen.

Think so too. Give it another year and if we can't acquire an impact player in the next offseason - which IMHO is very likely - just deal KAT to the highest bidder for picks and young talent. Then suck until 2021/22, in 2022/23 deal Wiggins gigantic expiring + some of our assets/youth for an impact player. We are wasting KAT's prime right now.

Three year plan to build a team with a good future - because with the current setup...we are not going anywhere.

We don't need to ship Wiggins out. Just bench him. Without Wiggins we wont attract FA's either.

I make the assumption that Saunders wants to keep Wiggins on the down-low... after an abissmal preseason, his hands are tied on moving him. It's not just bad shooting, it's the addidtional empty stat-line that glows (-).

I'm getting to the point that with Wiggins here, it will deter FA's ... this is where that broken deal to acquire Russell along with rumored deal to move Wiggins is really gotta be haunting the front office. Russell/Culver/Covington/KAT seems elite right now.
