The Omari Spellman Thread

Post#1 » by winforlose » Sun Mar 8, 2020 10:15 pm

Spellman got a triple double in Iowa today. Despite going 1-8 from 3, 6-15 shooting with 18 points. 13 rebounds and 12 assists. Also 1 steal, 1 block, and 1 TO.

He's a guy GS (or at least most fans) didn't want to move. The team just wanted to get under the luxury tax and moving Spellman (and the very expendable Evans) in the Russell trade was the only way to do it (IMO this is why the deal happened mid-season rather then waiting until summer).

He was a solid defender who was a solid face-up shooter out to 3-point range and had decent all-around skill. Worked as a bigger PF or a modern C.

What is up with all our Iowa big men netting triple-doubles?

Omari Spellman situation reminds me Nowell situation. I am sure that Rosas and Gupta value Omari, but something happens in background. These guys are working for future, for team interest. Once dust is settled we will see more why he is not playing for main team.

Thank you for input! I wonder if he can help us in two areas: rebounding, setting screens and defending the rim. Has he shown potential in these things?

If Spellman can hit open jumpers, there’s a place for him in the NBA. But the guy really has to keep working on his body. Losing a little more weight would do his athleticism wonders.

He's shot far better than Reid this season

Plus Spellman is a tank while Reid did like 3 reps of 180 lbs at combine

I really liked watching Spellman play this season when he was on the Warriors. He really put in a lot of work in the offseason to get in better shape to try to stick in the NBA. He could be a good stretch 5 with a pretty good three, hustle on D and can finish at the rim. I was super surprised to see him get sent down to your G league roster since KAT is not playing for a long stretch. Do you guys have a lot of depth at the 5? On the other hand, Jacob Evans is not very good at basketball. I tried to patient with him but he seems to be a wasted late first round pick.

They maybe weren't in immediate plans and they maybe didn't have the personal connections to coaches to get the initial free love many do because of connections and someone pushing for them to be involved already.

Was rumor that Spellman threw a fit about being traded, not surprising, he's admitted immaturity in past

Wolves said they traded Dieng in part because they believe so much in Naz Reid, to some degree I think Wolves FO wants the feather in their cap of having a undrafted rookie in rotation ("look how great we are at scouting")

I liked Spellman going back to Villanova, dude's pretty nimble for being so big, and he was hitting his 3s at good clip
39% on 110 attempts

Reid is two years younger and does have nice feel for game, but might be attitude that is once gain holding Spellman back

spellman has alot of passion for the game...he's a good pick and pop and roll big that plays with another energy on both ends. don't know why wolves don't play him.

Two things seem certain.

1. With our commitment to small ball, our rotation will always be wing heavy and guys like Spellman whose speed and body type are geared more toward traditional 4 or stretch 5 simply won’t be the priority. I don’t like or agree with it, but the rotations have proven this all season. Moving Roco to the 4, refusing to use Gorgui with either KAT or Vonleh, etc... Guys like Layman and Hernangomez who could also guard the 3 are prized for the switchability despite their lack of rebounding and size.

2. Because of #1, Spellman will likely be traded in the offseason. Either we package him as a part of a big player deal or we send him for a 2nd round pick in 2021 and mitigate the cost of Dlo.

I wouldn't be surprised if Spellman threw a fit, or at least let it be known he didn't want to leave GS (with strong emotion). He loved it in GS... as did GR3 and Alec Burks. Evans should have loved it cause we were the only team crappy enough to play him.

At any rate, back to Omari, I really liked him also. He can straight up shoot the ball and played tough inside. I think of him as kind of a Mo Speights type player. Hope he can find a place playing for yall, i think he could really be successful for you.

Here's what I heard. Omari had a tough time when he got traded from Atlanta and he had another tough time learning he got traded from GS. I don't know if he threw a fit bu the indication I got is that being traded has really messed with him. The front office and Omari thought it best he get time to deal with that and focus on playing in the G League.

The word is also that he has had some maturity/judgment issues in the past. Seems like he has skills but not sure where he is at mentally.
When luck shuts the door skill comes in through the window.

Spellman shot 3 of 4 from 3 had 19 points and a positive 13 tonight. Not really the right forum, but Vanderbilt also had 19 points on a +7, and Evans had 9 points but a +28.

I hope MIN can work with Spellman towards resolution. For instance, during this time give him special support with nutrition specialist, medical staff etc. If Omari gains weight and will be around 275lbs it might be disastrous for his career.
