Jordan McLaughlin RFA Status

John Hollinger

Jordan McLaughlin (R), Minnesota, $6,431,711

¿Qué? Yes, this number is a bullish assessment of McLaughlin, but he earned it with the quality of his play. He only played 590 minutes for Minnesota this year on a 2-way, but put up some impressive numbers – 56.9 percent on 2s, and 9.8 assists and 2.7 steals per 100 possessions. He was really good in the G League for the last two years as well.

My method has a strong regression to the mean component for low-minute players, but even after that adjustment he grades out pretty well, and he’s only 24. Minnesota will have restricted rights on him and should certainly look to ink him to a low-dollar deal as D’Angelo Russell’s backup.

JMac is a RFA. Wolves can match any offer he receives. Do you want him back and what do you think his market will be? He showed flashes last season but he is very small. 5’11 180lbs

Tyus was offered a 4 year deal worth 16-20 million by the wolves and he was very mad about it. Instead he got a 3 year 27 million deal from the Grizz

This is who I want the wolves to draft if we move on from Jordan McLaughlin.

Cassius Winston is bigger, higher ceiling, and NBA ready to read a team’s offense.

Prefer Campazzo, Ty Terry (17) or Tre Jones(33) tbh if the wolves move on from Mclaughlin.

I agree with the Hollinger quote offered. Earned it.

If teams can be drafting 5-11 players in the middle of the first and second rounds...
If teams can be drafting 5-11, 6ft and 6-1 scrawny forever players high in first round and building teams around them...
If teams can be trading for 6ft 184lb (2011 Rd 1 pick9) players to start at PG for them...

And they apparently do and have recently, so what JMac proved deserving of at the very least is a nice team friendly but player-fair deal for a polished skills player to rely on. If I had a struggling team missing a PG I would give him a starting role to see what he does with it. But a solid backup role should be good for him.

Boston, by mention from The Athletic's Weissand Hoops Rumor's Aurthur Hill, could be one of those teams that could use the scoring and other skills he clearly has off bench. Obviously they went after Kemba at 6ft 184 to lead their offense. So this size doesn't scare them. They see talent. People have to get off the height and predraft history things already. Kemba per100 doesn't shoot 2s at 57%, doesn't get 9.8 assists, or 2.7 steals (well he did one year). Those are JMac first NBA season numbers. Kemba shot 3s at .381 last season (36% career). JMac shot 3s at .382. Kemba signed a 4 for 140MM. JMac was stuck on a two way deal and back of the bus apparently now waiting on FA in MN and the Wolves realGM fans don't seem to take him seriously. Too bad. What is the difference between Kemba and Him really? Former draft status, college attended, and the subsequent respect of roster role.

Agree with Hollinger talk about regressing to mean when on low minutes. Which is why I would rather see him catch on elsewhere if the Wolves choose not to use him as the second PG. Third PG role or stuck in a 5th guard role here and he'll be wasted here. He specifically really seems to wind up and take over with higher minutes playing early enough in a game.

As I wrote before many times, I will be happy for JMac if he gets a big contract elsewhere. He earned it. I also wrote that he is RFA and we might not be able to keep him. We should be ready for this, and it seems like Rosas and Co are doing their work and consider a few options such as SRP (Cassius Winston), FA (Campazzo). We must stabilize backup PG position if we want to start to win next season.

I still prefer giving JMac Layman's type contract, but I see a team like DET offering him a massive contract.

I'd love Jmac back..plays the right way, not scared of the moment & seems like a good, positive teammate.

I'd still take him back even if we draft a PG @ 17.

I voted for no with a * mark. I want him back but not as the #1 backup PG. I think good NBA team have 3 quality PG 2 in which play nightly and a 3rd that you can count on to fill in on injuries or rest days. McLaughlin would make a great 3rd PG but I don't think you pay 4-5 million for that position on the roster? I am not sure what his value is around the league but would love to bring him back on a 2-3million dollar deal.

If we pick Ball I want him to be the primary backup PG running the second team with overlap minutes with DLo. I think McLaughlin could fit nicely in that 3 man rotation Dlo, Ball. McLaughlin.

JMac fits nicely next to a comboguard who can be at least average in defense. For instance, last season Nowell showed some good effort in defense. DLo-Nowell-JMac, or DLo-Maxey-JMac. Technically JMac is not a veteran, but his decision making is excellent, so I'd pay him 12mil/3yrs without thinking. Even 15mil/3yrs, but depending on other spendings.

McLaughlin back as the 3rd string PG would be great, but I'd have to pass on paying him $4-5M a year.

Do you see him as better or worse than Tyus Jones was here, or even is today?

Tyus had some good skills but in my opinion was no where near as good as JMac, not as aggressive, not as capable around the net by a far margin, not as confident on the court attacking and definitely not shooting, and as good as Tyus could handle the ball he didn't have the handles combined with the crossing burst Jmac has to twist really good players up. I don't think he has to get the same kind of offer Tyus got elsewhere - which may have been too high. But it was the minutes and contract respect that Tyus ultimately wanted because he was being benched and limited time too much here. I don't remember what the Wolves offered Tyus to stay, but it wasn't these crap 1+3 unguaranteed deals. Regardless he turned it down to get away from people he must have felt didn't have his career in mind when they decided on his usage or offer.

Boston for instance, has Daniel Theis who has been playing on 5/yr, has one more yr left I think. I think that's a fair number for JMac. We could use a PF with some salt in him which is what I saw in the playoffs. Wouldn't mind a sign/trade of Jmac for an expiring Theis. Boston isn't scared to use a small PG as long as he's good.

Something that bugs me a little. People keep referring to McLaughlin and J Mac. He's not a Mac. He's a Mc. It should be J Mc.

Big Macs from Mcdonalds probably ruin your day then.

Mclaughlin really carried some of those awkward reserve lineups in terms of creating action and playing with pace. Would certainly be sad to see him gone.

I would much rather see him kicking Wolves teeth in once a year from some random east team than see him buried behind a glut of terrible prospect guards here getting DNPs as a result. Just doesn't deserve that.

Fwiw Hollinger used a formula to do this and using whatever code/math he uses assigns a contract value of x to player y. It’s not what he actually thinks and it’s hard to imagine J-Mac getting the full tax payer MLE. On the high side he gets the BAE (~$3.5mil).

It’s also worth noting that the Wolves would have to use their own BAE/MLE to resign him as they don’t have bird rights.

I don’t think he’ll get paid. He played well, but there are so many PG’s that want into the NBA, plus he’s never gotten a big paycheck.

I suspect he stays on a three year deal, $2.4, $2.5, $2.6. Year 2 is guaranteed for $2, Year 3 is a team option, maybe $1 mil guaranteed.

I think he signs it too. I doubt there is a long line of teams looking to sign him, and $5+ mil guaranteed sets him up for life.

Not only that , there are like a dozen point guards in this draft and some of them will be cheap. It would not surprise me if teams would much rather have second rounders like Riller, Jones, Flynn, Mannion, Winston, Pritchard, Hagans, Howard etc.

There sure is a load of point guards in this draft. Problem is selecting the ones that will translate. Certainly not a given for a league that puts players like Ball up in the top3. A majority might choose wrong.

In the covid climate I don't think you will see many fully guaranteed multi year deals for fringe players anymore.
I think there will be alot of one year deals.
SInce an offer sheet has to be mutliple guaranteed years, If I don't see him leaving.
I could see something like you mentioned though with the first year guaranteed, the 2nd partially guaranteed, and the 3rd fully unguaranteed.
