Post Game Thoughts. Hosting Raptors.

Post#1 » by coolcono » Sat Feb 20, 2021 4:28 am

Only able to see second half.
Good- McDaniels looks like a strong rebounder, defender, decent offensive threat.
Edwards- Looked good again. Rebounded well, alright defense.
Towns-Did good offensively outside of choking on the last shot.
Layman Looked great off the bench.

Meh- Saunders took a smart time out when the Raptors came close. I think it was like 80-76.

Bad- Beasely had his shot altered consistently by Siakam. They should have made adjustments. Don't know who it lies on.
Reid- I know I retreat my dislike for Reid. An ok offensive threat, but his defensive awareness coupled with his poor rebounding ability were evident in this game.

Beyond Malik's poor offensive decision making, I would fully disagree with the analysis of Anthony Edwards' defense, if I am being honest.

This team is loaded with very talented, low IQ players.

The Wolves are what, 7-23 now???

This roster absolutely has enough talent to get a few more wins than that. I’m not saying our roster is good enough to have a winning record right now, but surely we are slightly better than absolute dead last???!?!

Not every loss is on the coaching staff. But at some point you have to look at the horrible record and question whether a more experienced coach could do better.

Young players who don't know how to win.

Some marvelous defense and play that brought us back in a game that should have been an easy loss.

Terrible execution down the stretch. Team is still playing better but they do not know how to win at all and it shows every close game.

The coaching staff needs to put a ton of emphasis on late-game execution. It's been terrible. Got to find ways to get Rubio effective when teams try to play off him.

To circle back to a thread that was going on earlier today. This is why Thibs traded Lavine for Butler and brought in a bunch of vets. Crap like this happens to young, talented, low BBIQ teams. Why you almost never see the youngest team in the NBA being very good.

In the last 3 minutes of the game ...

leading 81-75

Reserves out ... starters in
Rubio 2 Turnovers ... back to back processions
KAT 2 turnovers And picked up 3 fouls
4 fga ... all 3-pointers ... 0-4, 0%

Lost 81-86 ...

If I got the lead I’m going inside to KAT ... chance for the And1 inside or we simply go inside out. We didn’t make them work, didn’t draw a foul, just chucked.

I’m not sure it’s all on the young players not knowing how to win ... it’s heavIly on Ryan not knowing how to coach in crunch. One of the top scoring bigs in the league and not a touch inside ... not a ft attempt.

End of the game they were putting wings on KAT... just post him up!!! :banghead: :banghead:

Half the reason you run pick and rolls is to create the mismatches you want but they were just straight up giving it to us and we couldn’t capitalize. He is our star player give him the ball and let him operate.

Two bad turnovers by Ricky in the end, very bad timing. Continued stupid and selfish decisions by Ant and Beasley, i cant see any coaching there. Why was McDaniels not starting is beyond me. This shoudl have been a win, i think thats the one thing Jim Pete got right (hes pretty much a emotional clueless vet otherwise) - several games could have been won if not for poor in-game coaching (and i'll add the failure to hold the young stars accountable for their bone headed pplays at some point).

I can't lie..I really love Ant's personality and glad we took him. He really does seem to want to be great, we have to go through these growing pains with him. We've gone so long as a franchise of losing, but he's still a rookie coming into this situation.

I do love his personality. I hate his BBIQ. Don’t think it’s high enough for him to ever be a #1 or 2 on a very good team. I feel like it’s something you have or not.

Dribbles into traffic and loses the ball, check. Sometimes excels on drive other times fails to finish inside, check. Spotty 3 point shooter who can go very hot or cold, check. Doesn’t always know when to make the pass or take the shot, check. This is my Andrew Wiggins checklist. Who else does it sound like?

2nd game in a row the coach went with Beasley in crunch time. I dont get it. He is a spot up shooter not a shot creator!! Why can’t they understand that???

I will accept your premise for the sake of the conversation. Who is a better option in crunch time? Also remember that having Beasley on the floor forces the defense to react to Beasley and thus creates shots for KAT and whoever else is on the floor. Perhaps a better position for you to take is we need to do more to allow Beasley to catch and shoot rather than force him to create his own shot. For example off ball screens, pick and pop, ect...

Talk about too early to make that judgement. Edwards is 19 and 30 games into his rookie season. Sure, you might be right...but at least wait a couple seasons and let him mature and learn what the NBA game is like.

It’s more that Beasley has chosen to take super tough and heavily contested shots, when he had plenty of time to pass until someone had a better shot to take. Even to pass it away and get a pass back.

Normally I would agree with you, but tonight the ball was not moving at all. We kept having to take late clock shots because too many guys stood around while Rubio or Towns failed to penetrate. The offense is too easy to defeat when we play wing iso with a PG who cannot shoot.
