Post Game Thoughts. At Bucks.
Good- Finch seems to have a good sense of keeping some threat offensively on the court at all times.
Towns was the best player on the team tonight.
Meh-Edwards- If he could only hit open shots at point blank range. He has also has the talent to be a great defensive player, but gets out of place quite often. I don't know whom to blame when it comes to the passes to Vandenbilt.
Vandenbilt probably played Giannis the best defensively, but terrible offensive player.
Poor-Team defense? Or did the Bucks just have a great night shooting? The team was in the game until 5 minutes in the second quarter.
Other thoughts.
Culver should get minutes ahead of Nowell and Okogie when he comes back.
Juancho is a better defender than Layman, but I want Layman shooting threes over Juancho.

Now can we talk about Ant being like Wiggins? They both drive into crowds and get in trouble. They both like long twos. They both get tunnel vision and don’t pass. They both disappear on offense and defense. Edwards not only should not be a starter but he should not be a closer either. The kid needs to learn to play basketball.

Vando needs to be a DNPCD. He just cannot contribute in a meaningful way. Maybe the kid can learn to catch a pass and hit a layup, but until he does he isn’t an NBA player. Ricky needs to shoot less and pass more.

Proper starting lineup Rubio, Beasley, Layman, MCD, KAT.
Proper bench lineup JMAC, Nowell, Ant, Juancho, Reid.

You need to find a way to get Juancho going or switch to a 9 man rotation. Okogie can be a situational player and things will change once you get Dlo and Culver back. Until then Vando cannot be used and Ant must not start.

Finch probably won’t be able to be judged until after this year. But Rosas, I’d this season continues down this path, 100% needs to be judged. His talent evaluation has been HORRIBLE.

I will agree that I'm pretty disappointed in Vando. I thought he'd be great next to Towns but he has not been.

I would say that Rubio is shooting well in the last games. 48% FG and 45% 3P in the last 5 games. At least he cant be let open

You’re going to have a bad time if the other team hits 20 3s

A lot of guys showed up totally unprepared for the season. Layman was somewhat guilty of this, but Juancho was the most serious offender. Culver started hot but then fell right back down and Ant proved he has potential but is nowhere near a star in this league. That said, MCD is a home run. Beasley is a home run when used properly. Naz Reid is an absolute steal for his price tag. Jaylen Nowell is inconsistent but has Beasley level potential. It is not a simple matter of talent scouting, it is much more complicated. For example, a lot of these guys are young and have very little experience playing NBA pace. Lack of coaching under Ryan left them on their own instead of being able to rely on a scheme. The Covid cancel of the last 20 or so games and delaying the season by 2 months gave guys like Culver and Naz even less time to develop. Also, having KAT and now Dlo out for long periods mess with us even more. Rosas flaw is small ball. If he sticks with it we cannot stick with him. But don’t assume his talent evaluation is trash, it is about average. If bolmaro turns out to be a decent player I would say he is around above average. We just need to catch a break with Finch and hope he knows how to develop young talent.

This team consistently lacks defensive grit and determination. We have talked about this before and let’s talk about it again.

Regardless of the tough D you play later... when you give up easy look after easy look early, it just increases the other teams confidence later to make shots.

Tough D needs to come first. Not offense. Offense is much more intuitive and comes more naturally. I’m not advocating for a defensive coach, I’m advocating for a mindset that says start the game with the intensity focused on shutting down the others teams confidence to make shots.

This D is horrible.
Who’s our “defensive coordinator”?
Maybe there’s a very clear reason he’s not the interim head coach.

Small ball says it all. Outside of KAT no was big enough to guard a certain Greek Freak or their actual center Lopez. MCD did his best but he lacked sufficient weight. Vando was both too slow and too weak. Naz and to a degree KAT are PFs playing C. We need some true size to match up. The open 3s were all created by their bigs kicking out.

I didn’t see tonight’s game, but against the Knicks, Thibs was falling off him to try to keep Beasley from getting the ball, so Rubio’s numbers should be better.

But the main reason I wanted to comment is that you have it exactly right .. Rubio doesn’t need to be a great shooter - he just has to be good enough that you can’t leave him open. He already makes great passes, but if he has even a small amount of gravity, he will pick teams apart with his passing.

Rubio is shooting 30% three’s right now, but two of his previous years, in UTA and PHX, he shot 35.2% and 36.1%. I don’t think we should dismiss the idea that he can be an effective enough shooter that teams can’t just be left open, without him making them pay.

Interesting. It might be that we have seen Vanterpool up close, and some of our key players don’t listen to I’m.

I don’t think what DV is saying is wrong about defense. When Towns missed games and they inserted Gorgui, we went from a bottom five defense to a top three. This shows me his system is ok, but it might be a problem getting players to listen. And if the players don’t listen, that’s not the guy who should be our head coach.

Very true. Plus we got jobbed a few times by the refs on obvious Giannis push offs. Other times KAT needs to man up and take a charge, hold his ground. He has a bad habit of moving his hands instead of his feet. Other guys, like Vando and JO, are not players you will find on playoff teams, not ones getting meaningful minutes anyway.
This team not only lacks size, outside of KAT and Rubio, it sorely lacks IQ.

No worries Beas...we’ve been giving time for the last 17 years.

I almost kinda wish we would’ve lost the Denver game. Going on nearly 20 years without making the playoffs has a cool ring to it

Vanderbilt's greatest asset is his rebounding. That's simply not something in Towns' game that needs to be covered up.

+1000. Nothing else to add, just teach him to drive before he drives a car. He's not going to learn by crashing and burning, but I guess this is the Timberwolves' way.

This game saw a clear improvement regarding 2 things: center our offense around Towns and give Beasley good shots. But the bench was atrocious and defense seems to be optional.

Vanderbilt needs a reset. He's damaged goods right now. If we are going to give up 139 points while playing Vanderbilt and Okogie, you might as well give their minutes to Layman. It can't get any worse on defense and at least he'll make a shot here and there and space the floor.

Regarding Rubio, last 6 games he's averaging 46 FG% 46 3PT% 7as 1to. He just needs to keep doing what he's doing.

The funny part is that we wish he was like Wiggins at this point. If by the 3rd year Ant value would net you a Jimmy Butler type of player by himself i would be very surprised.

Stop comparing the two. At least until now where there's no comparision between the two. Wiggins by a large margin was more promisse.

Ant has a better handle but Wiggins had a more consistent shot. If Ant is more invested then Wiggins he might develop into a better player. But it is clear Wiggins was far more NBA ready then Ant.

Agree but let's not pretend like KAT wasn't abused last night. In 35 minutes he doesn't even have one block to show it. Giannis destroyed him on 1-1 inside.

The rest well, is something that a few of us talked in the pre-season and we were slammed back then. You can't go for a season, a must win season with this rotation of bigs that we have.
