The easiest roadmap to keeping Towns and winning in the next 1-2 years...

Post#1 » by wolfen » Tue Mar 2, 2021 8:38 pm

All this talk of trading KAT, ugh. I mean I get it, some fans want to blow it up, but I think my plan here is something that we could go all in on and be in the playoffs for sure by either next year or the year after. Here we go...

Now...
-Keep the stealth tank moving. Play the young guys to get experience.

This off-season...
1. Sell our souls to keep our draft pick and land Cunningham. If we get the 2nd or 3rd pick take Suggs.
*Why - Who needs a soul anyways...

2. Trade Beasley for Aaron Gordon.
*Why - A lot of fans are thinking "hey we've got 2 young PFs now, we don't need a replacement. We do have 2 nice young developmental PF's. One is only 20 years old and 20 pounds away from playing the PF position full time. The other is a gritty and hustling defender but offensively doesn't need to be guarded (a bigger part of the problem than you might think).
*Aaron Gordon... Is he the PERFECT fit at PF? Probably not. He's average defensively in the post (which isn't terrible mind you) but ABOVE average switching onto wings. Plus he's right at his prime or approaching it and is there physically right now, no waiting around. AG benefits:
A - Defense is good (not great of course). We keep our young defensive minded backups on the squad if we can and use them when needed.
B - Lob dunker - Another legitimate thing that defenses have to game plan against.
C - Transition scorer
D - Will get you 14 ppg every single night, unlike what we get from the PF position right now.
E - Ball handling & play-making - The dude has REALLY grown into a very good play-maker. More and more he acts as the primary offensive initiator, and that's from the FOUR position. That's hugely valuable.
F - Good 3 ball - He'll shoot it around 35%, around league average. Not what you NEED him for, but he's solid and can hit it, you would think he'd get GREAT looks with what surrounds him.

Beasley has had a very nice 10 months of basketball, he's probably hit his peak as a player, and he's still got holes, especially on the defensive end. There's just no way that a back court of DLo, Beas, and Ant could EVER take you anywhere in the playoffs with 3 bad defenders (of course Ant has potential).

Why Orlando does it - 2 reasons - Jonathan Isaac & Evan Fournier. They've got their PF of the future in Isaac, a good young backup in Okeke. Fournier is a free agent this summer so nabbing Beasley on a good contract would be a good plan for them to not over-pay Fournier to return.

The Gordon / Cunningham Effect...
1. KAT - He wouldn't have to blow all of his energy on offense trying to do everything. He could focus his energy on defense and score an efficient 18 ppg to boot. Effect? Better defense, more efficient offense.
2. Play-making & Ball Handling - Cunningham is simply ridiculous with the ball in his hands as a scorer, passer, and play-maker. Gordon is growing into a very good play-maker himself. The best NBA teams have play-makers at the wing position, we'd have CC, Gordon, and Ant to take care of things in that realm. And while DLo is still on the team, he can focus on what he does best offensively and AVOID the things he struggles at on that end (collapsing the defense, getting to the hoop, etc.).
3. Size - The starting squad would almost never have a size disadvantage, we have that a lot as it stands. DLo / Ant / CC / Gordon / KAT. Size at every position.

I'll add this to the equation... If Nowell continues to develop and becomes more efficient on the offensive end, I could see him closing games ahead of DLo just because he's a good defender (again if he develops more offensive efficiency). He wouldn't need to be a facilitator in that scenario, CC / Ant / Gordon would take care of that. He'd play the Derrick Fisher role at PG in those instances. Play defense, hit the open 3, move the ball.

Frankly, I'd mortgage pretty much any player on the wolves to make this happen. If the magic wouldn't budge, I'd throw in any other player(s) they would want outside of KAT & Ant. Any. Player. Yes, even Big Mac.

Suggs - Plan B...
I'd do the same plan, trade for Gordon, and if we got the 2nd or 3rd pick in the lotto I'd take Suggs. I think he's big enough to start at the 2 alongside DLo and would take a lot of the play-making responsibilities off of his plate. Plus he's a damn good defender and shooter/scorer.

Either way, with my plan (and I would mortgage a future draft pick or 2 in the process if needed) would be to end up with a core of either:

XX / Ant / CC / Gordon / KAT
or
XX / Suggs / Ant / Gordon / KAT

Either way I'd be pumped, but getting CC would transform this organization IMO. We gotta go all in this off-season. Yes, we'd be sacrificing a great shooter in Beasley. Some may think that Beasley is worth more in a trade, I actually think it would take more than just Beasley to pull Gordon away from the Magic.

Best case scenario: Land top pick and get Gordon for Okogie.

DLo / Ant / CC / Gordon / KAT

Hope for progression in Nowell, Big Mac, V8, Culver, and Naz. Sign jMac if they need to (2-way again). Use the rest of the squad in whatever trades for picks and or players that have different last names than them (Rubio, Juancho, Layman). After we start winning next year, maybe a high profile star would want to join in for the championship, who knows. That's the plan, send it into Rosas.. :D :D :D

Ironic you were typing this at the same time Aaron Gordon talk was brought over from the trade board!

Yes. People know that I was never that high on Aaron Gordon last year because of his horrible shooting, but he seems to be doing much better this season, playing his more natural small PF position. Fournier (if we used the other trade) is a good three point shooter - not to Beasley’s level, but you can’t leave him alone. Losing Malik hurts. Bad. But ending the season with a starting line up of DLo, Ant, Fournier, Gordon, KAT would play much better, give Ant a better situation to develop, and win some games to help change the culture. Remember how PHX became a different team in a short time when they were in the Bubble.

Next season, either CC or Suggs would fit in really well. DLo might get frustrated if he didn’t get the ball as much, but if we have the elite youth and are winning games .. you deal with it.

Save me a seat on the train.

Trade any combo ofn Rubio/Culver/okogie/bolmaro for Gordon instead. beasley has a great contract and his peak value has yet to be reached, when he does reach it then you trade him.

If the Magic would go for that I think we could all buy our plot of ocean front property in Tennessee and get on with watching future wolves playoff runs! But ya, of course keeping Beasley and getting Gordon would be crazy. In fact, it could put Beas right into his best fit possible - best 6th man in the league (with the highest sub minutes).

Gordon is coming off injury and subpar season and has one overpaid year left, you overvalue him.

I love KAT, but I just wonder if he's emotionally spent when it comes to Minnesota. He has been through so much with the Twolves that I just think he's lost something in his game. I'm not sure if its love for the game or what. The simple fact is that when I watched the Wizard and Suns games, Beal and Booker looked like all-stars and all-NBA players while Towns looks like the guy who puts up stats on a bad team. He looks a lot closer to Al Jefferson now than Anthony Davis. I fear if Minnesota waits too long to trade Towns, he will bring back the same return as Jefferson.

I see what you mean and it is also unfair for a new GM to not only be left the mess Thibs left behind but also try to win immediately because of Towns. That is the reason Rosas might have made a fatal error with the DLO trade and then passing of Ball.
The new GM (and the franchise) needs a fresh new start and also a new competent owner please.

Your last point about Dlo is a big one. It will be a move that causes the same thing we saw this year with him. Wolfen described Suggs as taking the playmaking pressure off Dlo and this is/was the absolute ruin of this season imo asking Edwards/Culver and even Beasley to attempt to playmake more/initiate more and take all our PGs out of their best roles. If Suggs is it, then it's time to move players however that has to happen. Probably should be Edwards, Dlo, all of them.

We can say "who cares" and hope Suggs is good enough to create winning where winning cures all. But there is really no way around the fact we just took a 30 million chunk of the team's cap and flushed it down the toilet, again. Overall that means the Timberwolves are competiting against the rest of the league short 30 million by choice. I don't think winning will be the result. We will be short many necessary things just like this year. In this scenario: A. Beasley's shooting which the team already didn't even have enough now with him. B. good depth, as Wolfen admits might have to give up some other players. It sounds like a sideways move again aside from the addition of Gordon. I'm not sure there is a good way to handle this coming draft if they keep a pick and plan to draft another guard besides trading Dlo. Besides that, Gordon also might end up the center in Rosas dreams if they attain him. Johnson, Davis, Vanderbilt all have seen time in the role as sole big on the floor while Kat was out. Undersized centers of a 4-1 nature. I think it's where Rosas is heading. Though we did see for the first time last game a Reid/Towns rotation for the first time during the Rosas era. Is this Rosas bowing to his new coach's ideas? Could be. Maybe he didn't ask. We'll have to wait and see if it happens again.

Maybe that's when you don't trade them. When you have a good player on a good contract.

Not you trade him.

I don't think KAT or DLO are "The" guys to win a title.

I actually think this draft has the future guy for this team to win & KAT/DLO are the 2/3 guys.

Jalen Suggs reminds me of Lillard...I want him so bad. I think he can be the guy right away just like Dame did for Portland his rookie year

I feel like Cade Cunningham will be a bigger star and more of a big name but I would be happy with Jalen Suggs as well.

A big three of Cunningham (or Suggs) Ant and Bates (or Chet) will be so much better than Kat, Ant and Dlo.

Wolves need to keep their pick this year and then trade for their 2022 pick back or as many picks in 2022 as possible (a whole firesale)
The 2021 and 2022 drafts are the kind of drafts (at the top) that perennial lottery teams dream of.

I don't get it.
Why do people not understand that the least thing the Wolves needs is another undersized PF in Aaron Gordon?

If this was my team, Towns would have long been moved to the PF spot and the first thing to do is acquire anyone available 6-11 or bigger to solely focus on rim protection, rebounding and blocking shots for at least 25 minutes a night.

That said, I believe everyone knows it already...I would also sell Towns to the highest bidder as soon as possible if I got a good offer.

KAT was supposed to be a great defender. Remember that draft?

Dunn was the automatic BPA and supposedly two way stud.

Edwards was instantly going to improve on his best 31% shooting simply by choosing better shots.

Now Cunningham or Suggs are the answer because...

The draft always cures this team.

DLo isn't really a 3 guy, maybe an 8th guy. I'm not sure he can even be on good team at his current salary. Him and Towns aren't really close to the same tier.

I think our foundation is going to have to come through the draft. I don't think the fact that we've repeated failed at the draft changes that.

Explain the turnarounds in Philadelphia (before Embiid and Simmons) and Dallas (before Doncic).

Gordon is an absolutely trash basketball player. Any path that centers around targeting Gordon, especially trading our best floor spacer to do so, is the wrong path.

Return to Minnesota Timberwolves
