Wolves Offseason Direction

Post#1 » by Godaddycurse » Sat Jul 17, 2021 10:40 pm

I'm a bit curious about the T-Wolves' direction this offseason as a neutral fan. To me there is a bit of urgency to prove to KAT this can be a winning team. They no longer have any pick debt and is in a position to add to this team. To what extent would you like them to do this?

Not a clear option to vote but I’m in the camp of moves on the edges. Like Rubio, Culver, etc for some cap space and look at Bobby Portis types that fit the glaring PF need. I truly think DLo, Ant, McD, ?, KAT with Beasley as sixth and some other cheap depth is worth trying for a year. Rubio, Culver, Juancho are expiring so tweak with 2022 pick and some flexibility then is not a bad thing if it doesn’t work. Think we’re a piece away from being interesting and 2-3 from fun.

I picked option 3, but I am not sure it takes unprotected picks. If it does I move down the chain.

Unprotected picks is a big ask, but Edwards is bigger. I suspect you will get no votes for option 2. FTR, Rosas said Edwards is off the table in a Simmons trade,

I suspect Towns is happier than ever before. He sees the talent addition of Edwards and McDaniels, he knows the team is done tanking (11-11 to close last season), and next year he will finally get to play extended time with DLo.

The Wolves were the NBA’s youngest team last year. This team will get better with internal growth - it already has. KAT and DLo have plenty of room to improve as well, at only 25 years old. Rosas has shown he can get good value from picks. I suspect he might give up protected picks for a legitimate starting PF that can defend and rebound, but MIN’s biggest improvement (just like last Spring) is likely going to come from team growth.

I chose Option 4.

Id say thats option 1 if no picks are involved

It has to since you dont have other high value centerpiece (if edwards isnt included).. other teams can outbid protected picks easily for a low end allstar

Recent low-end All Stars include Vucevic, Westbrook, Kevin Love, D’Angelo Russell.

Nobody really knows what the price is for Simmons. It might be less than people think.

I'd love to try the Simmons experiment but only at a reasonable price.

I think we have a playoff team right now with the potential to make 2nd round. Who knows? Look at Phoenix this year. It all depends on staying healthy, internal improvement and coaching. We've got excellent depth and the potential of a superb 2nd unit.

My guess is the Wolves pursue deals for John Collins and Ben Simmons, but nothing ever comes close to being finalized. After that I see the Wolves turning towards guys like Larry Nance and Lauri Markkanen, players who can be obtained at a much cheaper price (without giving up any core players or unprotected picks).

For wolves' sake i hope they aren't going for these kind of all stars. but sure if they go for these level of players it would be cheaper (although vuc cost chicago an arm and a leg)

That's exactly the kind of all-stars the third option is suggesting. You said low-level all-stars.

I voted for Option 3, before I saw the "unprotected"part. That's the only thing I disagree with in the option.

I’m in the option 4 … I just don’t see us having the right offer to bring in Simmons , Lilliard, etc., so go snag a solid PF and see if a leader will ever emerge outa KAT or DLo. However, that PF is a mystery.

DLo/Ant/McD/PF/Kat

Rube/Beasley/Nowell/Okogie/Culver/Layman/Vanderbilt/Hernangomez/Reid … gonna need to package a couple players from this group we can move to get that PF.

I was thinking more Sabonis/Ingram/Siakam/Simmons/Lavine etc. Not quite all nba level but still productive and young enough to match KAT? Apologies for the wording confusion.. in my mind there's all stars that are all nba and the rest are low end all stars :(

I see. Yeah All-NBA is certainly a different designation than All-Stars. There are 24 all-stars every year (more with injuries). There are only 15 all-NBA players yearly.

I'm fairly comfortable with the KAT/DLo/Edwards trio moving forwards so I don't think it's necessary to do either options 2 or 3. The one exception would be Simmons but I am motivated, at least partly, by the fact it's a potential value grab at this point.

The annoying thing about the whole Saunders experience is that we're now essentially back where we started: a new coach with some promising flashes with only a half season sample size. I don't know how this roster will do next season so I don't know what kinds of moves they should be making. Could internal growth push them into the playoffs? Maybe. Could the last 10-15 games of the season have been all smoke and mirrors and we actually have serious issues? Again, maybe.

But if I had to make a call, I'd say with health we're a play-in team that could use more bulk in the front court. So if our only move was adding a defensive minded, rebounding PF...I'd be ok with that.

I’m putting a lot of weight on Finch knowing what we really have… then as a front office, they collectively need to determine critical needs and weight the opportunities. I think we all pretty can agree a starting PF is a key link to this rosters success.

I'm of the opinion that McDaniels will be the starting PF in another year or two. Would like to see Reid re-signed next year as well and have Reid, McDaniels and KAT manage most of our 4/5 minutes. With that projection, would like to see them bring in a stop-gap veteran PF on a 2 year deal and maybe a cheap defensive center (maybe even an undrafted rookie or G-Leaguer on a Naz Reid type deal).

I'm still a big proponent of the Ben Simmons talk. But if that doesn't happen (I could easily see value not lining up) I think we'll see Option 4. I'm going back to the Larry Nance Jr. well for that. I really think he checks a lot of boxes, and Cleveland has an interesting roster balance issue they probably should correct.

Option 4 - I still think Turner is the move and will probably cost us Beasley and a protected pick. I think the Simmons talk on our end is smoke to drive the cost for Turner down. I’m in the boat that believes we’re short on assets to trade for Simmons. In my opinion the best route to Simmons is that Culver figures things out in the first half of the season and his trade value shoots up. Then, I’m more inclined to believe he along with Rubio and draft picks gets moved at the deadline in a larger deal that might help us land Simmons, and that’s only if we don’t trade for Turner. I’m alone on this and that’s okay, but I honestly believe Culver is going to turn a corner this year and surprise a lot of people.
