Dane Moore with a new perspective on Malik Beasley's shooting

In recent podcast Dane has been pointing out that Malik Beasley is taking on a new role this season as a super high volume 3 pt shooter and no now in the NBA does that consistently at a really great clip.

"At that volume (of shooting) you can not expect 40% for the season. When he does that is really exceeding expectations.I went through it, he is on the season, in 3-pt attempts per 100 possessions, Malik Beasley is 3rd in the NBA. It's Steph Curry, Duncan Robinson, Beasley, Bertans, and Jordan Clarkson. Of the top 5, the only player who has a better 3-pt percentage of that group is Steph Curry. Beasley is second best, 3rd in volume the league this season of those top players."

He was essentially saying that the other players in the league who are in this extreme mega shooter role, typically struggle hard to shoot a high percentage. The shots are difficult, it hard to get in a rhythm, you have to come out and be ready to gun. It's not the same role he plays in previous years where he was a starter and could flow more.

When you look at it like that, it makes the poor shooting a little more understandable. Also, the fact that he jacks so many shots isn't really because he's a shot jacker, it's his job on the team, to bomb away relentlessly. It's a hard role to fill and he will probably never be a really high percentage shooter for a whole season as long as he is playing this way.

I love it.

Does he dribble? No.

Does he pass? No.

Does he shoot? HELL YEAH he does.

Beasley has been, perhaps the best 3 point shooter in all the NBA in the last month. No way he can keep this up in the long term but it goes to show how streaky elite shooting can be when you are taking this many shots. The key will be him finding a better balance. I didn't believe he was the player we saw all season just like I don't believe he will be this hot for long. If he finds a middle ground he is still highly valuable.

People don't mind this skillset when JJ Redick or Kyle Korver have it, but someone like Beasley people are always expecting more from him...

He might not be the best NBA 3 point shooter, but he is the best 3 point shooter in the top NBA team offense right now. And I am cool with this.
