AJ Lawson Thread

You guys should read what Dallas fans were saying about him in their summer league thread. He is a high energy defender who has a nice shot motion and has ice in the veins. A few were comparing him to a young DFS. Obviously the kid has a lot to prove before he earns that level of praise, but at 22 I think we got a steal. Another 3 and D who can play and defend multiple positions is extremely valuable.

Yea my brother is hyped and I see people were very excited about him. I love taking chances on players like this.

8 attempts per game in college and making 35% of them.

Malik Beasley shot 8 attempts and made 37% of them. If we could replace Beasley's shooting for a fraction of the cost, that's a steal in itself.

He did shoot 34% from 3 on 5 attempts in the G-league last season.

He shot 50% from 3 on 5 attempts per game for Dallas summer league team in Vegas. Small sample size but the stroke is there

This is a little more optimistic than where I am at. I mean of course a defensive minded Malik Beasley level shooter who can play SG, SF and maybe PG would be awesome. But even if he is a run of the mill 36-37% from deep on 4 or 5 attempts per game, I would still really value him. The best part is with Rivers, Forbes and Prince all on one year deals, there is potential for him to earn a main roster spot next year. A solid year of development from Lawson, Moore, and Minott would be massive for our long term prospects. Nowell living up to expectations as well as Ant and MCD taking the next step in their games would be monumental as well. This move could turn out to be nothing, but it has the potential to be what Rosas did with Naz and JMAC only possibly on a bigger scale. I LOVE that TC is taking home run swings.

I saw some Reggie Bullock comps. That would be just fine.

New two way guy, we stole him from Dallas summer league team. He is being compared to everyone from Malik Beasley and Reggie Bullock, to Dorian Finney Smith and other good players.

Our 1-9 is established vets with a mix of younger and somewhat older. 10-12 is match up based but experienced. Like how we’re filling out the rest of the roster.

Based on the SL highlights I’m more excited about him than I am our first round pick at this point. Seems like a guy that gets shots in rhythm, stays active, and has a quick release.

Given that Moore had a bad/terrible SL, the same is true of Minott and Knight. Moore will probably play better with better players and more structure (like he had at Duke,) but Lawson is showing serious flashes of being a main roster player with a spot in next years rotation. Could easily see him taking Rivers or Forbes place next year and running backup SG with Nowell as backup PG and Minott as backup SF. This assumes a degree of development for all involved, but such a leap isn’t crazy by any stretch.

Dang, I don't know who is running PG in Iowa, but with Lawson and Minott on the wings should put up points

Probably Moore. Iowa takes marching orders from Finch and TC, and we saw in summer league they want to develop Moore as a PG. That crew plus Knight at PF/C will be interesting to watch.

Defense and off ball movement can earn him playing time with Wolves. He reminds me Rip Hamilton

I am FAR more confident that he has potential to be something than Moore, if I had any reservations about using Moore as an asset in a trade for an upgrade ...I don't now. Love this pickup, love it.

I am rooting for both.

A player from my hometown is on the team. They just added another Minnesotan in Chet. I am throwing out my support to have a backup plan. I think we will be better, but let's face it what we did is high risk and if it doesn't work out I might be dead by the time we get out of it... seriously. I think we got about 3 to 4 years of maybe having a chance, but if we middle it will suck... and after that we might have 3-4 years of decline and few assets. Life is short man.

I don't believe Moore had a bad/terrible SL. I think you're being hypercritical of him for little to no reason. I think he will make the team and stick with the team. Time will tell.

He was very bad, observationally, and any objective person would openly admit this. Obviously, one SL does not a career make, but his limitations were laid bare and rationally we need to own that. Given his age, there is reason for some concern. Doesn't mean he won't improve, but he struggled enough that it shouldn't surprise anyone if he ends up as end of bench long-term or is years from helping. With him I think you are left hoping for a monumental leap, because he isn't overly useful right now.

It should not surprise you some here have already given up on WMJ. They had already given up on Jaden McDaniels back in November 2021.

I didn’t say I gave up on him, and neither did So Money. It is worth noting that MCD didn’t have a summer league (there wasn’t one his rookie year,) and if he had he probably would have shined. In any event, Moore looked slow and displayed a poor handle. Does that mean his career is doomed, no. It was just how he looked.
